This is a rather large mouse pad, make sure your desk has the real-estate for one this large. The colors are about the right brightness to be visible and not distracting in low-light conditions. Very easy to cycle through the colors with what I am guessing is a capacitive touch button at the top center of the pad.
It did take me a little bit to get used to the rough surface coming from a leather mouse pad, but it performs very well. The rubber pads on the bottom of the mouse pad also work very well. I no longer have an issue with my mouse pad scooting around slightly as my previous pad did. The USB cord is used strictly for power and is about 6ft long.
With how subtle the lighting in on this mouse pad, I would have expected the design to be a bit more minimalist. For example, I think the Cooler Master logo could be a little smaller or moved, maybe a sticker that can easily be removed instead of the fingerprint for marking the button. The connector at the top is also rather large and obtrusive in my tastes.
But the main reason I knocked off an egg is that the top surface of my mouse pad has a small nick in the top that allows the LED light to shine through. It highlights the potential issue of the black surface flecking off and allowing light to shine through. I cannot attest to how easily it comes off as the defect could have been from manufacturing, shipping or even myself unboxing and testing it. But do realize that if during a rage-quit or intense gaming, the surface can be damaged and allow light to shine through the top.
Finally, the LED light choices are somewhat limited. It doesn't remember the last option you used between power cycles and there is no potential for USB controlled lighting. Most peripherals that are doing RGB lighting allow for programmatically setting the color schemes, but this one will not. Granted a lot of these peripherals are USB devices themselves and adding RGB control is almost given. I can see why they didn't put a USB controller in the mousepad just for the LEDs, but it is something to be aware of.
I’ve been using the Cooler Master MPA-MP720 daily for about 3 weeks now, and have really enjoyed the mouse pad’s surface. It is made of black textured silicone and I believe can provide high precision tracking for any mouse type. It’s also larger than your typical foam/rubber pad that you got with your AOL subscription in 1993, which means less frequent liftoff when playing games, or doing anything in general.
The pad is very rigid, and is most likely backed by a piece of steel or aluminum. Despite the added reinforcement, this pad is no thicker than your standard rubber pad at 2mm high. I’ve seen cheap composite pads as much as 4mm thick, which creates awkward and uncomfortable height differences between pad and desk surface.
The RGB LEDs around the perimeter of the pad give off a nifty halo glow – something I’ve never had in a mouse pad before. There are 9 preset modes that can be cycled through with a static-touch button near the top of the pad. There is no software required or available to control the LEDs. Your PC will not even detect that an input device is connected, as the USB cable only provides 5v power. The LEDs can also be turned off, but where’s the fun in that? I do have some complaints about the LED feature, so see my “cons” below.
I do have a handful of complaints to mention, which is kind of ironic considering how simple a mouse pad should be…
1) The mouse pad requires a USB port on your PC for power, but there’s no USB pass-thru to plug in your mouse. Wasting valuable USB ports is a super no-no in my book. CM, if you’re listening >>SUPER MISSED OPPORTUNITY HERE!<<
2) The metal bracket at the top is raised about 1cm off the pad’s surface. This provides a snag point for your mouse cable, and I frequently find myself lifting off the pad to move the cable. I contemplated removing the bracket, which requires both a torx and triangle bit, but the bracket functions to secure the cable to the port on the pad. Best not to remove it.
3) Why are there only 9 preset modes? Slow solid color cycle, solid red, solid purple, solid blue, solid light-blue, solid green, solid yellow, dancing rainbow, and chasing colors. There should be significantly more options here – solid white, breathing solid colors, color wipe vertical and horizontal just to name a few.
4) The entire outside plastic edge of the mouse pad rather sharp. After only a few minutes, this can start to bother your wrist. This should have had a more rounded/beveled shape, unless it affects the optical patterns coming from the LEDs.
Overall, this mouse pad is good but it has a handful of flaws that need to be corrected before it gets my full approval – mainly #1 and #2 in my cons list above. If CM offers a redesign and takes those two into consideration, they could have a game changer. Until then, I only recommend this mouse pad if you happen upon it with a very discounted price tag.
