comes with Blu ray player software

I don't have to use up an internal SATA port or have a rarely used device drawing power. I don't have to have keep a desktop computer within arm's reach. There is less wear and tear on the hard to replace optical drive built into my laptops. Higher power USB ports suitable for tablet charging make use of the "Y" cable unnecessary.

Plug and Play makes it easy to use.

-Extremely lightweight -Easy to set up -Burns at a faster speed than my previous drive

Easy to use quick connection to either laptop or tablet. Had no trouble reading or burning files. Quite even you can use it in a library.

It will play DVDs and Blu-Rays. Get VLC or another software. Make sure you also research how to add the dll and other file to get VLC to play Blu-Ray. Also, make sure the settings is for region A if you are in the U.S.A.

I received the external writer today so I will update once I start burning with it's performance and reliability experience. Unlike some bad reviews below the drive was plug and play for me on my Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) computer - which is what it should be. No drivers needed for me. I used my favorite and free burning application: ImgBurn (from imgburn.com) and it recognized it no problem. Highly recommend using this application instead, and VLC for video playback as the included ones are too bloated for what should be simple - burn and playback. I placed a blank Verbatim BD-R (6x) disc inside which is recognized. The USB Y-style cable is neat as it's 1 cable but has both USB plugs for the data and power it needs (the part that plugs into the drive itself is your standard Mini-USB plug). CD included includes the following software: PowerBackup 2.5, CyberLink Power2Go 8, and TurboEngine.

Looks good. Simply connect cables and unit works in all apps.

Some Pros: - Works great with laptop 12.7mm DVD drives! - Slick design! - Easy plug and play! No drivers/add-ons needed! - Good price!

Sleek, black, & serious. A button to open the tray. A light for drive activity. The case doesn't have extra bulk or useless frills. This drive isn't fooling around. It has it's purpose and it won't let the user be distracted with uselss adornments, instead the jet-black case is the Zen diamond-pattern consistent with other Asus products. Needs a standard USB 2.0 connector for operation, nothing else (although it is a mini-USB connector, somewhat odd in this age of nearly ubiquitous micro-USB connectors). The drive is quiet, fast and reliable. Faster than my other external DVD writer. More reliable than other DVD writers I have also. Aside from the mini-vs-micro-connector issue, Asus executed the engineering and manufacturing flawlessly.

Cheaper than the Apple drive.
