5 out of 5 eggsTrackball goes out

Pros: great HTPC keyboard.

Cons: Trackball can stick

Other Thoughts: I'm on my second one of these. I love it. Only negative is over time the trackball starts to go south. I replaced the first one after 3 years because the tracball quit working like it should. Put up with the inconvenience for months, and finally replaced it. Everything else still works fine. I liked it so much, I replaced it with an identical keyboard. I've had it a few months now, and the trackball is starting to feel off. I've read that there are some things you can do to improve it's performance when it goes, but they didn't do much for my first one, and this one isn't bad enough for me to mess with it yet. May eventually see what the 3 year warranty might do for me, but for now it's not a problem. Even with this one problem, I still think it deserves 5 eggs.
And despite what another reviewer says, it DOES have an off/on switch on the bottom. If your looking for something to keep next to your recliner to maneuver your Big Screen, I'd strongly recommend you give this one a try.

4 out of 5 eggsIOGEAR GKM561R Black 2.4GHz Wireless HTPC Multimedia Keyboard with Laser Trackball and Scroll Wheel

Pros: Excellent trackball for positioning the pointer on smaller spaces.

Cons: Needs a left click button beside the trackball so you can navigate and select with one hand like the nmediapc it replaces. I REALLY miss this feature. Trackball is loose in its socket and moves the pointer if you tilt the keyboard. Should be a tighter fit.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected - 2+ years

Pros: Works as expected, great for a HTPC type application. Use to navigate my pc (screen on my TV) from my couch, web browsing/playing movies ect.

Cons: No on/off switch so if it falls between your couch cushions and a key gets pressed down will wear out your batteries faster. My dog chewed the battery cover off while it was on the floor :)

4 out of 5 eggsHTPC Keyboard

Pros: Range is ok for me (15ft+ ... thru closed cabinet door). Nice having mouse keys and wheel opposite trackball hand and all needed functions included without 2nd device (mouse).

Cons: Trackball tracking is a bit "vague". It gets there, but it's a bit frustrating at times.

Other Thoughts: A good purchase for the money tho more precision with the trackball would be appreciated.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works. Windows installs right away. Has survived a beating for 2 years from a cat and a baby that like to knock it on the floor.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted

Pros: One of the very few mouse/keyboard combos out there that is actually configured correctly. Clickers on one side, mouse movement on the other side. Even Logitec's "high-end" HTPC keyboards have mouse pad and clickers on the same side.

Cons: After about 1.5 years of owning, the usb receiver died. Called IOGear up and ask about purchasing a new receiver. They said they would send me a receiver free of charge. I waited about 3 months for that receiver to come in. After the 3rd month I called back again inquiring about getting a replacement receiver, and even willing to pay. The lady over the phone, Stephanie, said that there was no record of me calling in the first time and apologized for the first customer support tech for not following through with the first receiver. She said she would send the new receiver with tracking. One week later I get the new receiver :)

To the bad news: I plug in the receiver and the QWERT and UIOP keys are not working. They were working before the receiver died and the keyboard was stored away until the new receiver arrived. Not sure what happened between now and then; and yes I removed the batteries before storing the keyboard.

Other Thoughts: "It was fun while it lasted" would be the best way to describe this keyboard. I wish it would have lasted longer because it really fits my needs.

Manufacturer Response:

First, thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. The product should not behave as you described. Since the unit is backed by IOGEAR's 3 year warranty feel free to contact our customer support at 1-866-946-4327 or email us: support@iogear.com. Again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

Pros: Easy set up, Good Size, light, comfortable, Perfect for HTPC

Cons: Cheap and un-removable trackball

Other Thoughts: I love this keyboard to death and use it every day. The Set-up was non-existent (If I remember - I've had it so long). I think I've changed the batteries maybe once or twice in 18 months, and I guarantee I use it more often than pretty much anyone on earth.. I just came back to say that I've had the same trackball problems as everyone else, but I always just thought of it as a cheap, loose, trackball. Today, I just cleaned the heck out of it with alcohol, only from the outside, just turning and washing and turning and washing etc. for about 20 minutes, and it works (for now) like new. Left and down still work better than right and up, so that's just a manufacturing problem with the trackball design.

So, if you don't feel like taking the entire thing apart, including the tape you have holding the rubber edge onto the right sight (like me haha), try giving it a THOROUGH rubdown with alcohol, and see if that makes a difference before you get out the screwdriver.

The pros far outweigh the cons on this little monster. This is from someone who has used it 8+ hours a day for over a year and smokes in the house, and has dogs. I wouldn't "game" on it, but it's perfectly fine playing silly things like Scribblenauts or The Sims on your giant TV. As long as the trackball is not making you really work for it.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall good keyboard.

Pros: Good quality keyboard. Good range. Excellent battery life

Cons: The trackball sometimes gets sticky and hard to move due to dust and natural oils I just get a wet microfiber cloth and it seems to free up the trackball.

Other Thoughts: It is good to replace the ball bearings every six months or so and clean out the trackball area I use 2.5mm ball bearings and they are very cheap online. Makes it glide like a lizard on ice.

5 out of 5 eggsGood htpc keyboard

Pros: I have 2 of the keyboard. They range is good. Works from across the house. Compact but the keys are normal size. Intergrated mouse makes it ez to use when away from desk. Great for use as a living room or bed room computer.

Cons: Rubber comes off the side. doesn't really hut anything but makes the keyboard feel jagged.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't replace this with my gaming pc but works great with a media center or when using a regular mouse is a hassle.

3 out of 5 eggsNice Design

Pros: Design is easy to handle, the mouse buttons are nicely placed, but away form the trackball.

Cons: The trackball. At first it skipped or did nothing. Cleaning accomplished very little improvement. Finally retired the keyboard because of lousy trackball.

Other than the trackball, the keyboard is great.

Other Thoughts: Still looking for a decent replacement. I'm hoping to buy one tonight. The two replacement attempts are OK, but I bought pad keyboards hoping for usability, but the trackPADs are very difficult to use as they frequently drag things when cursor movement was desired. I think that the problems with the pads is the software, but I am not in the mood to write anymore drivers, I'm retired.
