The 3M HC238W9B is a frameless privacy filter for 23.8-inch, 16:9 monitors, suited to people who want to limit side viewing while keeping a glossy, high-clarity display. Its microlouver design provides blackout privacy from side views outside the 60-degree viewing angle.
Recommended For
- Employees who handle HR, payroll, finance, or other sensitive records at a fixed desk and want to limit side-angle viewing on a compatible 23.8-inch, 16:9 monitor.
- People working at shared or open-plan desks who usually sit directly in front of their monitor and want the screen obscured to viewers outside its 60-degree viewing angle.
- Users who want a privacy filter for a stationary 23.8-inch, 16:9 display while retaining a glossy screen finish and high-clarity image presentation.
- People who want a screen accessory that also reduces some blue-light transmission and adds a layer of protection from dust and scratches.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- In an open-plan office, use the HC238W9B while reading email or customer records to make casual side glances from nearby desks harder, while keeping the screen readable from your seat.
- At a semi-open HR, payroll, or benefits workstation, use it to reduce visibility of sensitive on-screen details to people seated beside the desk; it is not a substitute for positioning the monitor away from someone standing directly behind you.
- At a shared office desk with coworkers or visitors passing nearby, the filter can limit side viewing during routine computer work, though people sharing the workstation may notice a dimmer screen or prefer an unobstructed view.
- When reviewing a document with a coworker beside you, expect the narrower viewing area to make shared viewing less convenient; this filter is better suited to individual screen use than frequent side-by-side collaboration.

Reference Q&A
Q: 3M HC238W9B vs. 3M PF238W9B: which 23.8-inch privacy filter should I choose?
A: Choose the HC238W9B if screen clarity is your priority: 3M says it provides nearly 20% more clarity than its standard Black Privacy Filters, while both models are designed for 23.8-inch, 16:9 monitors and provide privacy from side views outside a 60-degree viewing angle. Choose the PF238W9B if you want a reversible glossy or matte finish instead.
Q: Should I get the HC238W9B or the magnetic 3M PF238W9EM?
A: Choose the HC238W9B for its high-clarity positioning and a fit designed for a monitor’s raised bezel. Choose the PF238W9EM if you want edge-to-edge coverage and magnetic attachment that lets you remove the filter quickly for screen sharing. Both are specified for 23.8-inch, 16:9 monitors.
Q: Is the HC238W9B better than a standard 3M black privacy filter for everyday monitor use?
A: Choose the HC238W9B if you want 3M’s higher-clarity option while keeping side-view privacy. Choose a standard 3M black privacy filter if its reversible glossy-and-matte finish is more useful to you; 3M identifies the HC238W9B as nearly 20% clearer than its standard Black Privacy Filters.
Q: Will this filter fit my 23.8-inch monitor?
A: It is designed for a 23.8-inch, 16:9 monitor. Before buying, check that your screen’s visible area matches the filter dimensions: 20 3/4 × 11 11/16 inches. A matching diagonal size alone may not guarantee fit.
Q: Can people beside me see my screen with the filter on?
A: The filter is designed to black out side views beyond its 60-degree viewing angle while keeping the screen clear when viewed from the front. It is intended to reduce side visibility, not to hide the screen from someone looking straight at it.
Q: Does the filter work with a touchscreen monitor?
A: It may work with some touchscreens, but touch compatibility is not guaranteed for every device. Check the monitor’s design and confirm that the filter does not interfere with its touch operation.
Q: Is it easy to install and remove?
A: The product is designed to attach, remove, and clean easily. It is a frameless filter intended to fit within a raised monitor bezel; confirm your monitor’s bezel and screen dimensions before installation.
