The Toshiba Canvio Advance is a 4TB portable external hard drive for people who want to carry large photo, music, video, and document collections, with a compact 2.5-inch design and USB 3.0 interface.
Recommended For
- Windows laptop or desktop users who want a high-capacity drive for scheduled backups of photos, videos, and other files; Toshiba offers downloadable backup software for Windows.
- People who carry files between home, work, or school and want several terabytes of storage in a compact, USB-powered drive.
- Photographers and video creators who need an affordable place to store or transfer large photo and video collections, and do not need SSD-level transfer speeds.
- Windows users who want password-protection software for a portable drive, with the understanding that the security software is a downloadable Windows tool.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- On a Windows PC, set the backup software to copy selected folders on a schedule; this can make routine backups of documents and photos less dependent on remembering to copy files manually.
- Move a large photo or video collection off a computer to free local storage; the 4TB drive is suited to keeping sizable media libraries together, though it is an HDD rather than an SSD.
- Carry a media or document archive between home and work, or take it on a trip; the compact, USB-powered drive can provide access to stored files when a compatible computer is available.
- Copy large folders between computers or create a second copy of important files; review testing found it suitable for photo and video backups, while transfers of many small files can take longer.
- Keep personal files on a drive used around other people and enable Toshiba’s password-lock software; this adds an access check, but should not be treated as a substitute for keeping another backup copy.
- Use the drive with a Mac after reformatting it; the drive is supplied in NTFS format for Windows, so Mac users should account for setup before using it for file storage.
