- Answer:The DS8187 was designed to be a high performance retail-rugged scanner. It will scan 100% UPC (think UPC from a can of Coke) from up to 36". It is not a long range scanner, nor was it designed for warehouse use. Scan range is a linear function of symbology size ... as a general rule, the bigger the barcode, the farther away you will be able to scan. see less
