Pros: The drive works well so far, it's read speed is good, and it's write speed is decent for the price, and it looks good in my case.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: This is where it gets interesting. I bought this drive having no knowledge of Sony's completely obnoxious digital rights management on their BluRay technology. Since this drive is an OEM, that means it doesn't come with software, which normally isn't a huge deal for media drives. If you buy this drive, and it will play your DVDs, but won't play your BluRays, that means you don't have the required software to play said BluRays. IF you don't want to pay an additional $50.00 U.S. for the BluRay player software, I suggest looking up a program called "MakeMKV", it's not a perfect solution, since you have to actually install each BluRay onto your hard drive in order to play it (I play them with "VLC Media Player"), but it is a free solution. I hope this helps. But keep in mind, if your drive will play DVDs and not BluRays, the drive is most likely NOT malfunctioning, you just don't have the correct software.
Pros: Allowed me to install windows 8 from an optical disc. It plays DVDs. It plays Blu Rays. It hasn't broken yet. It's quiet enough. It was inexpensive.
Cons: doesn't come with a SATA cable, or software.* This isn't really a con. It's listed as OEM, which means no software or cables included. It is a bare drive.
Overall Review: It's still working, and will be a 5 star item unless it does break sooner than one would expect. It doesn't come with software to play Blu Ray movies, but I figured I'd want a drive that can read that format in case all discs are printed on Blu Ray someday. Also, software can be found online for blu ray playback. Use Google wisely, you'll find it.
Pros: Great price Plays video well and isn't too loud during the process
Cons: When reading data discs at top speed, however, this thing sounds like a jet engine. Also, when I put my mobo driver CD in, it decided to play for me the song of its people - which for all the world sounds like the motor that moves the lens is broken. Come to find out, it just makes that sound if you put in a dead disk. Very strange.
Overall Review: Nice drive with some colorful character for a great price. I'd definitely recommend it.
Pros: Does what it says it does. It read and writes DVDs, and is capable of reading blu-ray.
Cons: As stated in other reviews, it's not capable out of the box of actually doing anything with blu-ray. I'm still testing out different programs to find one that's optimum for this. Mine's a bit on the noisy side. Others have mentioned how quiet it is- mine might be a bit anomalous.
Overall Review: Despite the problems above and the 3 egg rating, I do actually like this drive- I don't see myself using it all that much to do anything but rip new CDs, watch movies and emulate old playstation games, but it works precisely as intended.
Pros: I got this drive for backing up my movie collection. It has done a great job so far.
Cons: Riplock is a form of DRM stuck in the drives firmware that limits the speed at which you can access data on a disc. When you are backing up a disc it maxes out at around 2-4x . Just an FYI if you will be backing up a collection look elsewhere.
Pros: Purchased it for 1 reason, and thats M-Disk. Want my photos, all 10 gigabytes to last in a safe without degradation and thats what this drive is meant for.
Cons: Dual layer & M-Disk BR will be out soon so the drive will be obsolete before it's 1st birthday.
Pros: Works as advertised. Pulled out my old DVD drive and plugged in this one. Plays new releases Blue-Ray disc with no problem. I run it with PowerDVD 13. Yes you need software this is OEM drive.
Cons: none
