Good Memory

Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT8G3D1609DS1S00
Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT8G3D1609DS1S00

Pros: Really big memory space Decent speed Reasonable Price

Cons: For a while, my system was rock solid at 1.5V; then after about 2-3 days of use, (including Memtest and Prime95 testing) one of the sticks died. Bluescreen in windows was immediately followed by a bluescreen while booting. I didn't even have time to shut the PC off before the motherboard started beeping in distress during BIOS. Traced it to one of the 2 sticks becoming dead, could not boot with it installed.

Overall Review: Newegg rocks -- they advanced RMA'd me a replacement set, so I could run on the good stick until it got here. New sticks have been rock solid, though I've manually overridden the MB to give them the 1.6V others have mentioned. 'Just in case'.

Decent Monitor, With Flaws

Hanns-G 26" LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI-D HL269DPB
Hanns-G 26" LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI-D HL269DPB

Pros: No dead pixels Good color balance Bright display -- can handle lights without washing out

Cons: Nonstandard Vesa screw holes -- the screw holes for the vesa mount aren't deep enough to take standard VESA screws Bad view angle -- the top strip of the monitor has slightly distorted color (especially when displaying dark colors) because I've mounted it at eye level, rather than on it's usual stand on desk level. Not an issue if you're planning to sit it on a desk so you're looking down at it, but extremely annoying if you intend to mount it so you look straight forward.

Overall Review: I don't know how many people try to mount monitors on swing arms for better ergonomics; if you don't, the 'flaws' more or less vanish.

Great Cooler

Noctua NH-U9B SE2 92mm SSO CPU Cooler
Noctua NH-U9B SE2 92mm SSO CPU Cooler

Pros: This thing does it's job, and it does it's job very, very well. Even when the fan leads were accidentally disconnected (so the cooler fans weren't running), I could stress test my PC for over an hour and only hit about 80-90 degrees celcius. Though that is high enough that I started poking around in the case in concern, the fact is that I could probably have run a 'normal' operations schedule for years with that level of cooling!

Cons: The thing is huge and looks heavy. Every time I my my PC, I'm worried this thing is going to rip the motherboard in two. It hasn't happened yet, in several years of using this type of cooler, but I'm emotionally convinced it will. (Logically, I assume the underlying plastic is stronger than it looks or they wouldn't MAKE this type of cooler, but... emotions don't listen to logic) The mounting bracket doesn't have any markings to help assist in getting the fans mounting in the right direction. With some work it's possible to figure it out based on screw positions, but as I discovered it was way to easy to muck that up.

Overall Review: The cons are pretty darned minor compared to the incredible cooling potential of this device. I have only had this specific device for a year, but it's essentially a refresh of an identical mount I bought years ago for my last CPU, which I loved until the day that computer died. I've been using the Noctua line for 5-6 years now, and I anticipate staying with them for as long as they make these babies.

Good, Strong Switch

IOGEAR GCS932UB 2-Port USB DVI KVM with Audio and Mic.
IOGEAR GCS932UB 2-Port USB DVI KVM with Audio and Mic.

Pros: Physical Toggle Costpoint Ease of Use

Cons: Doesn't like gaming mice -- have to turn mouse emulation off

Overall Review: I've had this switch for nearly three years now, and the only reason I'm looking it up is because I think I need to replace it, and I'm deciding whether to replace it with an identical model, or an improved one.

Fast, Fast, and Fast

Plextor M5S Series 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) PX-256M5S
Plextor M5S Series 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) PX-256M5S

Pros: Blazing fast speeds -- POST took me longer than windows boot up even before I activated the RAID controller for my data drive. This drive runs blazingly fast.

Cons: Didn't fit a standard SSD mount I had floating around; don't know why the screws didn't line up, but it wasn't worth fighting with. I've applied zip ties to hold the drive in place instead -- it's light and vibration free, so it's not like I need it mounted that securely.

Decent Board, Poor Support

GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP4 TH LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with Dual Thunderbolt
GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP4 TH LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with Dual Thunderbolt

Pros: Lots and lots of USB 3.0 Ports Thunderbolt ports help me be tech-proof if that standard becomes as successful as it could be (helpful because I run in a half-mac ecosystem, and apple is really pushing the tech) BIOS is easy to work in POST is fast

Cons: Only USB3.0 ports on the back -- spent a long time debugging an issue where windows couldn't see any USB ports. Eventually traced it to the fact that windows 7 doesn't have USB 3.0 drivers installed by default; I had to plug my keyboard / mouse into the case-side ports. Thankfully I had NOT upgraded to a case that used USB 3.0 ports. Possibly related, but I have a minor issue with my USB inputs. Every once in a while, averaging about once per day, my USB controls (keyboard and mouse) freeze for a few seconds. Originally this took the form of my keyboard 'sticking' on a key while typing. The result would turn 'typing something' into 'typiiiiiiiiiiiiething' -- one key would act as if it was held down, and then it would skip over several of the ones I typed before I noticed the freeze. Over the last few days (just got back from a short trip) this has transmuted into a more frequent (and thus easier to debug) issue where all USB controls freeze for a few seconds, rather than a key appearing to stick. I improved the issue by installing the latest USB drivers from their site (which completely solved a second issue of USB devices being lost and immediately re-found, as if all of them had been unplugged and then replugged), but I still see occasional incidents of it. It's hard to debug because of it's infrequency (though it's latest transformation might make this easier), and it might be an interaction with my 'smart' peripherals or the KVM switch I use to switch between machines. Hard to test with something that doesn't occur on demand. Moderately detailed manual is missing several critical sections -- it's only help regarding POST beep codes was to check a later chapter that did NOT have a list of BEEP codes. There is, as far as I could tell, no available reference material describing the beep codes the motherboard uses to report when POST fails. A lucky google search turned up that someone else had determined that a long period of repeated, fast beeps was a memory issue, or I might not have solved the issue yet. RAID slows the boot cycle considerably. I spend more time in the RAID initialization screen than any other part of the boot up process. Annoying, because I boot from the SSD, *not* my RAID data array.

Overall Review: I have a number of complaints, but the board seems to be settling in nicely and I would definitely buy again.

A Week To Ship the item, unboxed, damaged, and without required accessories

I didn't enjoy waiting a week for the product to be delivered to Fedex for shipping, but sometimes stuff happens and I didn't dwell on it. I just focused on when the item would finally arrive. Today it arrived. I ordered a KVM, and I got a KVM. Damaged (missing one of the feet), wrapped in bubble wrap, and without any of the accessories (cables, manual, power supply), or even the original manufacturer's packaging. They just wrapped a KVM in bubble wrap and shipped that. OK, I'm not happy, but I decide to just return it for a full refund. I contact Newegg to get that process started, making it clear I was going to rely on Newegg to ensure that I got a full refund -- that's part of why I ship through Newegg! Well, the seller responds by asking what was wrong with the product, when the initial contact made my basic complaint clear. They ask for a photo of the product to show the warehouse, and I comply. The come back with an offer of trying to get me the right cables instead of the refund I asked for. At this point I reiterate: I want a refund. So they offer me a $50 refund to compensate me while they look for the cables that was supposed to come with the KVM -- ignoring the fact that my brand new product was shipped damaged, without the box, the base, the power supply, or anything else it's supposed to have. I'm done here. Newegg may have the opportunity to regain my business, but at this point I'm done with these shitheads, and if Newegg doesn't make it right they'll loose my business as surely as I think I'm about to loose several hundred bucks I paid for a KVM.
