WD Caviar Black drives combine a high performance electronics architecture with a rock solid mechanical architecture to deliver the perfect storage solution for your fully-loaded PC or maxed out gaming machine. Cool drive operation, no-touch head technology, leading-edge vibration protection ensure enhanced reliability.
Pros: At the time of purchase there was a promo. My WD Caviar Black 1TB shipped to me for $79. You cannot beat that price!!
1TB is plenty of space for your average user or enthusiast. Will store a bazillion pictures, and all the documents you'll ever have. If you're a huge movie buff and rip Hi-res to your drives, you may want to opt for the 2TB.
Preformatted NTFS for an easy and flawless installation of 64bit Win7 Home Premium. I have it connected to a ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Generation 3 mobo via SATA 3.0. I have yet to test read/write speeds with any reputable benchmarking software, but I expect it to perform decently well compared to other 7200rpm drives.
Cons: Windows Experience Index (WEI) of 5.9 when the rest of my system scored 7.6 and 7.7. This was somewhat disappointing..
Overall Review: Shipped to me in a generic brown unmarked package. No documentation or papers whatsoever. No warranty info... nothing! Just a hard drive wrapped in static foil slapped into a cardboard box with a generic red SATA cable and a Newegg invoice. Weird!
When I need more space, I'll buy more of these.9/2/2013 12:25:45 PM
Pros: I have 8 WD HDDs installed in 3 home network PCs, 2 of those being this model and they're in my system. The other 2 are the WD1002FALS drives. My kids have 2 WD 640GB drives in both their systems each. None have ever failed.
Lots of storage space, although it's never enough, I have 588GB of games from my Steam Library on one of these drives right now, which is why I have 3 more WD drives!
I have no intention of wasting money on an SSD at the current price per GB. I don't see the need even for any of the over 600 games I own, as these drives are fast enough, especially when factoring in the amount of storage space they have and their relatively low price.
I just copied a 10GB file from one drive to the other, and it took just over a minute at transfer rates between 140MB/s down to 80MB/s. Most games load levels/maps quickly, and often I'm one of the first, if not THE first player in the game (BF3 and BFBC2 are two examples) at the start of a round.
Have yet to experience a HDD failure from the WD drives I own, or have owned. I've only had this particular model for a few months, so it's too early to really know if this one will be as dependable. I'm not worried (though I DO backup my important stuff, just in case!)
5 year warranty. If it's ever needed, it's nice to know it's there.
Cons: I really don't care for the OEM/bare packaging. Yes, it's cheaper that way, and it's clearly stated that it is, indeed, a bare drive. There's always a greater chance for damage while shipping and warehousing a bare drive versus one 'safely' packaged in a retail box. I would have rather ordered a retail box version, but at the time I was too impatient, nor had the budget to do so. I guess time will tell if that was a good decision or not.
Overall Review: Nothing is included with the drive. You'll have to buy a cable if you don't already have an extra. I only say this because there is always someone who didn't realize this when buying a bare drive.
Pros: Fast sustained R/W, hdtune averages at about 120-130. Much quieter than my older black drive.
Cons: Fairly high heat.
Overall Review: I bought this to replace a 6 year old WD that was still going strong but starting to show its age. It's heavy as far as drives go (feels heavier than a 3tb drive), but performs very well and has so far been reliable.
Pros: I have had this for about 2 years and it has been transferred through 2 rigs. I dont really know what to say besides I have never had any problems with it and it works well.
Cons: none
Overall Review: Western Digital makes good products so go with them.
Pros: I purchased this drive in July of 2013 and it has been running 24/7 in my 13TB unRAID server without issues. There is a lengthy pre-clear associated with using a drive unRAID which the WD passed with no issues. Basically every sector is written to and then read from, so any issues are detected prior to the drives use. Unlike some of the drives I've tried to use, this one had no errors.
I can't commend on speed because I use it in a storage array, but I can transfer data to and from my server at almost 100MBps. I do suspect this thing would be prett
I'm also a fan of this drive because being a WD Black, the spindle is attached at both ends, unlike the Green drives, which are not built as well.
Oh, did I mention this drive has a 5 year warranty? A few years ago, I wouldn't have bothered to bring that up, but these days, manufacturers are slashing their warranty periods.
Cons: It's a little on the pricy side compared to some of the other drives with similar specs.
Overall Review: If you're just going to be using this drive for storage, you might want to look elsewhere. There really isn't any need to spend the extra money on a 6.0Gbps interface and 64MB of cache. But, if you are using this as your OS drive, you can't get much better.
If you do ever have an issue with the drive, WD has always been phenomenal when it comes to replacements.
