Disappointing 12/19/2018 2:50:00 PM

Pros: Cheap
VESA

Cons: Factory color has a BIG green tint (measured with colorimeter)
Only measured 94% sRGB gamut coverage

Overall Review: The color really let me down. Avoid this.

BenQ GW2470ML monitor - budget with some shortcomings. 9/15/2018 10:57:40 AM

Pros: - Budget price
- Bright enough
- VA panel allows better contrast than TN
- In Linux the open-source driver works, but there's no Linux driver update included on the BenQ Montor CD, only Windows 7-8-10 (no XP or Mac).

Cons: - With out-of-the-box default settings, colors are somewhat dull, faded looking, low contrast, especially with Low Blue Light settings and in videos.
- Adjusting the color settings (Gamma, Color Temperature, Hue, Saturation) is a convoluted process - they are grayed out until you wade through several menus and find/select User Mode and then backtrack to Picture Mode. Even then the Gamma range is very limited, just 5 presets.
- VA-type display panel seems to have a somewhat narrower than advertised viewing angle, so edges & corners lose some vibrancy as you move your head.
- No DVI cable included, only VGA, HDMI, and power.
- All included cables are shorter than usual by about 15 inches (38 cm) - in my setup they would not quite reach from desk to floor, so I had to get normal ones.
- No height adjustment in stand.

Overall Review: For some people this may be a good budget monitor, OK for general use (not high-end gaming), but IMHO the color settings are harder to find than necessary and somewhat limited. The monitor's default firmware menus show only brightness, contrast, sharpness, some low blue light settings and default environment settings which vary brightness. As a result, with default settings, while some graphics (eg: non-photo quality screen wallpaper) might look OK, colors in photos & videos may be notably washed-out looking, grayish, lacking in contrast and vibrancy.

The software color adjustments in your particular Windows/Linux operating systems & graphics drivers may or may not help compensate for those built into the monitor, but I could not achieve good color balance with 3rd party calibration software like Calibrize.

If you like VA panels, you’ll love this screen. 8/25/2018 12:33:17 PM

Pros: Lives up to its VA panel name. (Vivid image, good colors, nice range of contrast.)

Cons: Suffers from whatever is lacking in VA panel technology. (Mild color distortion at various angles - forgivable but there.)

Overall Review: Other thoughts: Posting this initial review on 2018/08/25 - I’ve been using it for 2 weeks now. I like it so much, I barely even noticed the change from my old monitor (a trooper of a screen, a 14-year-old 4:3 Dell UltraSharp 1905FP - still going pretty strong btw, but I needed to upgrade to widescreen).

Bought this BenQ GW2470ML specifically because it was a VA panel (and on sale). It was a toss up between this monitor and an Acer KN242HYL (which I’ve purchased twice before for family members). This allowed me to compare it (the GW2470ML) to the Acer KN242HYL (which is an IPS panel). And honestly, it really comes down to technology preference. The KN242HYL is a really good IPS panel (which means that colors are true at extreme angles, just darker), and the GW2470ML is a really good VA panel (which means that colors aren’t true with angle changes, but the image stays about the same brightness). And to the GW2470ML’s defense, any color distortion is pretty forgiving (the colors tend to gray out/desaturate, but it’s not that awful inverting common on older LCDs).

My personal preference: I like VA technology over IPS, so I picked this screen. And it does not disappoint. If you like IPS more, the Acer KN242HYL is an equally good bang for your buck. Both monitors have gone to less than $100 on sale (I got this screen for $89).

PS - One last comparison: Acer monitors also have this quirky auto input search built in - meaning that it will automatically swap to another input if it doesn't detect an active signal. (Eg - if it is on VGA and there is no VGA input active, it will swap to DVI and search for an active signal). Which, under the right circumstances, can be a pain. And this BenQ monitor doesn't do that. It will sit on VGA, even if there is no active signal.
