5 out of 5 eggsSatisfyingly clean sound

Pros: -Clean Sound
-Bass boost doesn't hinder the other frequencies, just raises the lowest ones slightly
-Brings out details in sound I can't even get out of my best pair of headphones
-Looks great around my PC monitor
-That hum that all speakers get when powered on is barely audible with these. I usually forget they're on to begin with.

Cons: Nada

Other Thoughts: I honestly cannot think of a single genre that is disadvantaged from these speakers. I listen to just about everything, my favorite genres being classical, metal, and electronic dance music (mostly trance). Obviously with classical music, it is hard to get good piano sound on just any pair of speakers, this goes for strings and winds as well with orchestral pieces. I find that classical sounds are so pure that they tend to come out unevenly on most typical headphones / 2.1 systems. If there was one genre this type of speaker were tailored for, it would be classical. You don't get that awkward rumble that only comes out on specific notes because there is no pitch left out with how these are made.
Metal may not be the most demanding when it comes to speakers, but vocals are what really shine with this genre, and for that matter, any other genre involving listening to lyrics. I found myself being able to effortlessly comprehend them unlike with other speakers where I'm struggling to hear them over the instrumentals.
Now if you're someone demanding bass, you probably want to get a larger scale pair of bookshelf speakers, or a 2.1 set with a good subwoofer if you are not too picky on balance. These speakers have nice bass boost which packs a punch without impeding on other frequencies. To me, I actually love listening to electronic the most on these because it makes the lead sounds feel so cerebral. and since the sound is so balanced, it gives me a better idea of what the artist wants me to hear, since they themselves probably produced their tracks on some sort of studio monitor where they can hear all of the loops at the same time and can pick out what needs adjusting.
Bottom line - If you want balanced, awesome, still fairly inexpensive bookshelf speakers, BUY THESE!!! I myself am planning on keeping these for as long as they serve me. If i were to upgrade, I would probably just get AV-40s or perhaps go temporarily broke on something from the BX series. Because with M-Audio speakers, I am exceedingly impressed with how speakers of just this size can perform. It's astounding that these are merely entry level in terms of M-Audio's product lineup.

1 out of 5 eggsBlown, 2 months after end of warranty

Pros: Sounded GREAT while they worked. So I gave them a 5-egg review soon after buying them.

Cons: Stopped working; busted caps (blown capacitors). Both electrolytics capacitors in the left speaker have swollen, and spewed disgusting yellow goo all over the circuit board, so even if I replace the busted caps, the speakers will probably never work again.

Other Thoughts: Good capacitors are only a little more expensive than cheap ones that blow up after 14 months, and would be worth paying a little more. Shame on M-Audio for cutting corners! They obviously have the expertise in house to make good speakers. But until I hear that they've started using good components, I won't buy their stuff again.

2 out of 5 eggs7 months later...

Pros: Sounds really good. Don't need a sub. Compact. Good price.

Cons: These things basically sound blown after owning them for 7 months. I have never turned up the volume past 11 and never put any hard hitting bass though these. I started getting a static sound and it sounded like they were blown. Visual inspection shows that they are in perfect condition, all wires and connecting cables are in excellent shape. Tried using the AUX port to make sure it was not my sound card and the same thing. These went from sounding great and giving me good sound to being unusable because of the static or blown sounds.

It's mainly in the right hand speaker (the "dumb speaker with no electronics) that is giving me the most grief. Horrible horrible static sounds.

Other cons: Wires from soundcard to speaker are not nearly long enough. Bass adjust is pretty useless.

Other Thoughts: I am really disappointed about these speakers. I have used several M-Audio based gear before and I hopped that these would fill in that gap when I did not want to use my headphones. The fact that These have very little usage and died like they did is really disheartening. Hopefully I'll get a RMA for these but I am having a hard time doing that.

I cannot recommend these speakers. I hate to say it but in this price range the Creative Gigaworks T20 are a much better deal. This is M-Audio and they cannot make a solid $99 dollar speaker set. The fact that Creatiove sounds better with better quality is really a shame.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: They sound ok when they work

Cons: Left speaker died after the warranty expired. The warranty is pathetic one year.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from these and from this brand especially.

3 out of 5 eggsAV30 The Good and the Ugly

Pros: Great sound compared to most speakers.

Cons: Lots of issues with left speaker. If your speakers ever have issues and warranty is out after a year, trash it and get new ones cause it will cost you more to ship them out for repairs. And good luck getting support without forking over a lot of hard earned cash.

Other Thoughts: These speakers are very nice to listen to but I don't recommend them. I just dont understand how speakers of this quality can go bad after a year of non-abuse use. I've had other speakers such as logitech/creative for years and never had issues. I've looked up on forums and it looks like many others have similar issues as well. If you want nice speakers, I suggest the other name brands. If you got the cash to fork over new speakers after a year, AV30 is a good choice.

5 out of 5 eggsBest 2.0 Speakers in this range

Pros: Amazing sound quality. Crisp sound. Clean and smooth bass. Not too much of any frequency. Sturdy construction. Comes with decoupling pads. Headphone and aux in ports on the front. Smooth volume knob.

Cons: The back of the left speaker tends to get hot. Not really a problem at all for me though.

Other Thoughts: Had these for a little over a year and they're been through a lot of transportation and a decent amount of abuse but they haven't even shows signs of giving in yet. These would hold their own in a studio. For the price, you can't get any better. Don't settle for anything else.

3 out of 5 eggsThey're not bad.

Pros: High quality case construction (wood). The speakers are a fairly good size, but possibly bigger than you're expecting. I've just measured mine at 8.5"T x 5"W x 6"D.

Cons: I'm using these for my HTPC setup in the bedroom. The blue LED ring that surrounds the volume control is really freakin' annoying. Also, the speakers get quite warm when they are left powered on. For these reasons, I'm using a remote (RF) power switch (intended for lamps) to turn the speakers off when I'm done using them, without having to get out of bed.

The audio quality doesn't match the speaker's construction. That is, they don't sound anywhere near as good as I was expecting. The mid-range audio (like people speaking in TV shows) isn't very clear. There is nearly no bass at all (I'm ok with that). It isn't a huge improvement over the TV's built in speakers, except this can go much louder with less distortion than the Samsung's speakers.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Speakers

Pros: Small, powerful, sturdy, precision monitors.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Any kind of audio enhancement software such as FX Sound DFX for Windows Media Player or IDT or Realtek audio solutions for laptops really, really, bring out the amazing clarity these speakers are capapble of. I am an audio enthusiast and vocalist and I think the AV40 {10 watts more power} would be an overkill, even for me, unless you have a much larger room.

Buy them. You will never have a complaint.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth it

Pros: Well ... a year ago I bought this bad girl and I can not complain about them ... in regard to the sound is impeccable ... And the more I listen to ... better they sound. It is true they get very hot in the back ... but, my consolation is trying to have the sound on the pc controlled ... not sound so saturated ... and believe me .. You can do something with this. I can not complain .. if tomorrow may be damaged .. I am satisfied ... sounds is good for what i paid for...

Cons: Nada...

From a humble corner of the Dominican Republic .... in my opinion ... If you can control them ... you can buy them ... They are excellent ... if you keep control of then and Dont let you emotions take over you... they well last.

Other Thoughts: If you can keep control between good sound and saturation ... you can buy it ... in one word .. CONTROLIt is the key... Their sound is excellent

1 out of 5 eggsLooking for Support? Forget it!

Pros: Sound and quality seemed great at first. Solidly built for the price and very good range. Purchased to us on PC that I use for music.

Cons: Left Channel completely died shortly after 1 yr warranty was up. Can't find a way to contact tech support, either through email or by phone. You have to buy a service subscription even to contact them - check the links here on NewEgg listing. Very frustrating - can't even find out how to pay for a repair or buy a schematic. Supposedly I get lifetime service labor, but if I can't contact them how's that work??
