Xigmatek goes beyond the conventional in their innovative, efficient thermal solutions. Instead of a copper base or bulky heat spreader, the Dark Knight-S1283V is part of their HDT range of coolers. The Heatpipe Direct Touch system is a cutting edge solution for efficient thermal transference directly from the CPU – heatpipes in direct contact with the CPU instead of being buried within a base. These 3 large U-shaped 8mm pure copper sealed tubes contain fluid which moves the heat upward into the array of large-surface area aluminum convection fins.
The fins are cooled by over 89 CFM of cooling air from the 120mm fan spinning on Long Life bearings. Even at its maximum 2200 RPM speed, the fan only generates 30.1 dBA of noise. This level can be lowered automatically, based on thermal demand utilizing the PWM functionality. Controlled by the BIOS, the fan's speed is adjusted automatically as the system detects changes in temperature.
The Dark Knight sits upon vibration-eliminating rubber mounts which isolate any fan vibrations from the motherboard – ensuring quiet operation. A tool-less clip holds the cooler safely in place on any AMD Socket AM2, 754, 939 or 940 processor as well as all Intel Socket 775 and 1366 CPUs.

Wrong Bracket in Box!
- Pros: Top rated cooler.
- Cons: Came w/ wrong bracket - verified by Xigmatek. The top bracket comes in 2 pieces, and one of the two was from their "old" line and would not fit the holes in the motherboard or the back plate bracket. Ended up finding another Dark Knight locally w/ help from Xigmatek, from which I robbed the correct bracket. I'm going to return the Newegg Dark Knight.
- Other Thoughts: I'm not particularly enamored w/ the way the fan attaches, using little pieces of rubber. It might be great for isolating any noise from the fan, but it doesn't attach tiightly and during the build, I actually knocked it off once! Best to install the cooler prior to mounting the moboard in the case. It's a big honkin' cooler, but it fit in my Antec mid-tower case...
Don't listen to the negative reviews
- Pros: It keeps my overclocked quad core Phenom II 955BE chilly while gaming. Plus it was surprisingly easy to install on an AMD processor (just one clip) and looks great.
It also fits over my Ripjaws despite their large heatsinks.
- Cons: It's too popular for it's own good (see below). The shiny black coating is a magnet for fingerprints.
- Other Thoughts: Like all popular products it attracts people with the intelligence of a tree stump. It is not The Dark Knight's fault if you do not measure your case to see if it fits. The size of this cooler is clearly written on the specifications page. I saw a one egg review where the person BROKE SOME OF THE FINS and complained that it didn't cool properly. Really?!?
Newegg should remove negative reviews due to PEBKAC.

Uncompatible with i7
- Pros: If you can get it on your mobo it does a good job cooling your CPU.
- Cons: 1.The bracket that comes with this cooler is totally incompatible with the core i7 bracket.
2 The instructions that come with the cooler are totally incomprehensible.
- Other Thoughts: I think that xigmatec did a very poor job of QAing the bracket for core i7 compatability. If you have a core i7 processor and try to follow the directions that came with it, you will find out that the feet of the bracket don't even touch the mobo when placed on the CPU socket, which is necessary because there is adhesive on the feet so the bracket can attatch to the mobo. The only way I was able to get this cooler installed on my mobo was by attatching the feet individually to the mobo. This also worked out better for the cooler because the way the bracket was designed would have prevented direct contact between the heat pipe and the CPU, which is necessary for heat transfer. All in all, I was very disappointed with this cooler because it took me many hours of tinkering to do something that should have only taken a few minutes. This is not the cooler for you if you want an easy install!
Amzing cooler
- Pros: It works great, outstanding cooler, I am using it on a AMD Phenom II 955 C3, with it overclocked to 3.9 GHz its running idle at 26-28 c, on load it never goes past 46. I was shocked on how big it was, it fits in my NZXT Tempest evo case nicely. It installed very nicely on my motherboard.
- Cons: I never tried the stock thermal paste but many people said that it wasnt very good and it doesnt come with much. I have nothing to complain about this cooler.
- Other Thoughts: Don't even think about it buying just buy it.

- Pros: Big heat sink, quiet, rubber fan clips make it virtually silent. Keeps CPU nice and cool
- Cons: Its was impressive, but lacks the "best" that many reviews claim. Nothing particularly wrong, but its not amazing. And its a little overpriced for what it does.
