Xigmatek goes beyond the conventional in their innovative, efficient thermal solutions. Instead of a copper base or bulky heat spreader, the Dark Knight-S1283V is part of their HDT range of coolers. The Heatpipe Direct Touch system is a cutting edge solution for efficient thermal transference directly from the CPU – heatpipes in direct contact with the CPU instead of being buried within a base. These 3 large U-shaped 8mm pure copper sealed tubes contain fluid which moves the heat upward into the array of large-surface area aluminum convection fins.

The fins are cooled by over 89 CFM of cooling air from the 120mm fan spinning on Long Life bearings. Even at its maximum 2200 RPM speed, the fan only generates 30.1 dBA of noise. This level can be lowered automatically, based on thermal demand utilizing the PWM functionality. Controlled by the BIOS, the fan's speed is adjusted automatically as the system detects changes in temperature.

The Dark Knight sits upon vibration-eliminating rubber mounts which isolate any fan vibrations from the motherboard – ensuring quiet operation. A tool-less clip holds the cooler safely in place on any AMD Socket AM2, 754, 939 or 940 processor as well as all Intel Socket 775 and 1366 CPUs.

  • newegg Superior Heat Dissipation and Cooling Performance Three high-performance heatpipes with H.D.T. (Heatpipe Direct Touch) technology and high-density aluminum fins with innovative raised points maximize heat transfer and dissipation. Plus a huge 120mm rifle bearing fan runs efficiently to deliver unparalleled cooling performance.
  • newegg PWM Function The PWM function automatically adjusts fan speeds according to the CPU temperature for efficient cooling and minimized fan noise.
  • newegg Easy Installation The XIGMATEK Dark Knight-S1283V features a 3-in-1 application retention module design for easy and quick installation without additional tools or the need to remove the motherboard from your case.

5 out of 5 eggsGood heatsink overall

Pros: Does the job well, keeps my Phenom II X4 940 (not OC'd) around mid-30s C during idle and mid-60s C under gaming load. White LED fan is a nice touch. Fan was easy to install and there's no vibration. No comparison to stock heatsink, since the CPU was an OEM purchase from Newegg.

Cons: Mounting the heatsink was kind of a pain, and it seems like it'd be easier to mis-seat the heatsink on AMD mobo's than on Intel mobos due to the clip-style mounting instead of the 4 screws that Intel heatsinks mount with. Instructions weren't that helpful.

Other Thoughts: Couple of tips for installing (AMD users):

- Use a little more thermal paste than usual.
- Center the base on the CPU, then wiggle the mounting clip in and secure the heatsink. Was a pain for myself to seat the heatsink with the clip on.

Pros: -Works great, keeps the CPU chilled
-Darker color blends into case well

Cons: -AMD installation hardware is a joke

Other Thoughts: The led fan is white, it's not overpowering but not not be what you are looking for.

Pros: Keeps my i7 920 plenty cool - haven't had any overheating problems yet.

Cons: Be sure it fits your case first - I have an NZXT Apollo, and the fan on the heatsink touches the fan on the side of the case when I close it. Had I had an even slightly smaller case, it would have beena no-go.

Other Thoughts: The max temp I've seen on my i7 so far is around 52 C. To be fair, I have not yet overclocked it (I've been lazy.) My dual 4850 X2's have locked up once or twice from overheating, but the processor hasn't acted up yet.

5 out of 5 eggsScourge of Heat Dissipation

Pros: A)Excellent LED Fan - emits a nice white light; sound at full load gives a silent hum rather than sounding like a leaf blower

B)Light enough that it doesn't induce stress to the motherboard nor look ridiculous

C)Detachable Fan - meaning you can replace the fan if the bearings fail over time without having to sacrifice the entire heatsink like some other competitor offerings

D)Nickel plated coating gives a nice serious look

E)Keeps my 3.8 Ghz at 73 C (during Prime95), 78 C (during Linx) and less than 67 C during normal gaming or load

F)About 50% cheaper than similar competitor offerings and still keeps up in performance

Cons: A)The direct heat pipe technology doesn't seem to have a more measurable impact on cooling than heatsinks without it.

B)Ensure that you use washers (unsupplied with cooler) when screwing the heatsink down into the motherboard, as well as ensure no backplate metal is contacting the back of the motherboard directly. Otherwise you will short out the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Most i7 temperatures people are claiming here are not core temps as measured by Real Temp, but rather Bios or temp readings on the CPU. Expect 70 - 80 C at 3.8Ghz under real temp during a Linx or Prime 95 run.

The maximum temperature taken on the outside of the heat spreader with a calibrated thermistor should not exceed 67.9 C per Intel Specifications. Per Real Temp, this is about 73 C. If the Dark Knight is cooling all four cores at 82 C under full load during Linx or Prime 95, you’re probably okay as normal load utlization should be less than 68 degrees Celcius (i.e. during gaming or folding). It would be wise to aim for 80 C or lower during Prime 95 or LinX when testing an overclock. Just remember that you may have to crank it all back in the summer.

5 out of 5 eggsGood cooler!

Pros: This is a great cooler. Very easy to install. The cooler has a nice finish to it. Simple instructions, not a hassle. It's very secure. Fan looks great in it's white colors! Keeps my uncle's i7-930 very cool!

Cons: Fan was somewhat of a PITA, but it wasn't that bad.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice, almost 5 eggs

Pros: My temps are down 12'C.

Cons: If my case didn't have top fans I would have been a bit angry. Most people want their case to cool front to back. You can't do that with this cooler if you own a AMD based system. The fan is going to be inches from the graphics card blowing up. Hopefully you have a top mounted power supply or case fans at the top of the case otherwise this is a huge problem. It also blocks two memory lanes, but if you installed them before hand then it really isn't a problem

Also it would have been nicer if the plate was smooth an didn't have the ridges between the heat pipes, it might make things better. Who knows how much as it is working great for me.

Other Thoughts: It would have been 5 eggs if it included a bracket to turn the cooler 90'.

5 out of 5 eggsQuestionable

Pros: This either could be very good cooler or a mistake in judgement

Cons: Manufacture leave it a guessing game by not providing dimension measurments directly related to Over hang overtop of Memory Modules. Plan accordingly If your memory are not tall in height then you will be fine. It would make too much sense to publish height of clearance from Motherboard over top clearance to bottom of radiator fins. Alterative better mounting brackets that the consumer has to research and track down then purchase? Give me a break. Lastly the imperfections in the heat pipe direct touch irregularities. which turn into the imperfections not touching directly. Fill it in with Artic Silver? C'mon Give me a break!

Other Thoughts: This still could either be a very good cooler or a mistake in judgement. Alternative mounting brackets that the consumer has to research to track down then purchase on top of this cpu cooler; leaves a lot to be desired. possible to Only mount blowing up or down on AM-3 configuration. Unless you buy the after market mounting bracket.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: My temps dropped 15C compared to the stock fan I had on my Phenom X4 955.

Cons: Mounts horizontally with AMD, blocking off two RAM slots. I ordered a custom mount from an overclock forum member which let me mount it correctly for correct air flow

Other Thoughts: This thing is huge. I have about half an inch of clearance between this and my side panel of the CM690
