Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler

Unmatched performance for the value, these are the tenants that guided Cooler Master engineers when designing the Hyper 212 EVO. Patented Continuous Direct Contact (CDC) technology ensures that the heat pipes are free of barriers while drawing heat away from the processor. A PWM fan ensures that fan speed can be intelligently controlled to ensure that it only speeds up when more cooling is necessary.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat improvement over stock

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: My AMD Phenom II X4 925 with stock cooler, load temp reaches 57° C. I upgraded cpu to a Phenom II X4 975 BE with this 212 EVO cooler, load temp is 50° C. The sound is also relatively quieter at load than with stock cooler.

I also intend to checkout the be quiet! Pure Rock and Cryorig H7 in the near future which are in the same price range. I read they outmatch this EVO

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Three full turns on each screws is all I needed to secure the heatsink. I didn't want to tighten it all the way down since the motherboard tends to bend from the force. I didn't want issues down the road.

Fits my Antec Nine Hundred Two case without the side case fan. I modified the case side fan to make the clearance.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: The bottom line? Does it's job like a champ. I'm using this cooler, with Arctic Silver 5, on an AMD FX8350 and everytime I've checked with EasyTune it keeps CPU temps within 2°C of system temps. At idle, my MB runs the fan at under 1200 RPM and I immediately noticed how much quieter it is than the stock cooler.

Cons: Weirdly difficult instruction manual. I hate to take an egg off for it, because I think the trouble is largely part of the package being able to be used on a wide range of CPU sockets, but I was pretty frustrated at least once during the install. If your team always wins at Charades, you'll be fine. However, if you think of "Instruction Manual" and expect words arranged in a description of the method of using the product, then you're in for a rough ride getting there. The actual physical complexity of the installation isn't that bad, but good luck figuring the unlabeled "E" standoff from the "F" standoff based solely off of pictures that only vaguely correlate to the actual hardware.

Other Thoughts: I like the inclusion of hardware for adding another 120mm fan to the other side of the heatsink. It also comes with it's own TIM, which is probably just as good, but I went with the Arctic Silver 5 I already had.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Cooler, bad fan.

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: It does the job! The heat sink looks very well constructed. Massive in size. It weighs a good weight, too.

Cons: Perhaps I just got one from a bad batch. Installation was fairly simple, though the description of some of the included hardware didn't seem to match the actual hardware I received. Four of the screws for the AMD install weren't notched, like the instructions mention, and didn't include washers like the Intel screws did. It was missing two of the four sticky pads for a second mountable fan. These tedious issues weren't enough to drop more than one egg. But the fact that the order got lost in the mail, and that it took about a month to get to me took an egg. The included CM fan took the other two eggs away. The fan started rattling within a week of use.. touching the fan would eliminate the vibration for a few minutes, but then it would come right back. There's no way this fan put out 80+ CFM of air flow. Perhaps it was just a bad fan. Who knows? But for $50, and being that this part is meant to protect your expensive CPU and board, I would expect it to work without flaws of any kind. I am just glad that it didn't die completely and kill my machine.

Other Thoughts: The "X" bar makes a world of a difference.. putting it on wrong can make the heat sink "lean" in on direction or another. Doesn't seem to affect performance, but could make you cross eyed if you look at it for too long..

4 out of 5 eggsBleeping Cow, this thing is HUGE!

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: There is no doubt in my mind that this thing will keep the CPU cool. It looks like it got ripped out of a Volkswagen Beetle from the 70's, polished up, and packaged. It's five pounds of Heatsinkzilla.

Cons: It's huge. I count my blessings that I build with full-sized tower cases which had the room to spare. But if you like cute little LAN-party cases that you can tuck into a bag and cart around, you might run into trouble with this thing. This is my first time using an aftermarket CPU cooler, and it was a bit challenging. Admittedly, part of that was due to my inexperience: I didn't realize that this thing needed a backplate on the mainboard, and I'd already installed it into the chassis. Not really a big deal to pull it out again, but a few minutes of wasted time.

Other Thoughts: The instruction manual is junk. Use it to verify that all of the parts are included, and then burn it so that you're not tempted to use it for the actual assembly process. Go find a YouTube video by someone who knows what they are doing. If you insist on using it, have Advil handy. Part of my issues installing this came from the manual telling me to put the thermal paste on the CPU before installing the backplate. Really? It was fun trying to hold the mainboard on edge and tightening nuts because of that little bit of nitwitism. Loses an egg because CoolerMaster hires clowns to write their instructions, I guess.

5 out of 5 eggsReally nice fan :)

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: Really quiet. Like compared to my old CPU heatsink fan this thing is amazing. It's really big, I thought it wouldn't fit in my Rosewill Challenger at first, But it just barely made it. Running an amd fx 8320, stock speed, MSI 970a-43 Mobo, Using the thermal compound that came with the heatsink. The temps hover around 16c-19c when idle, and mid 30's when gaming (CSGO, BF3) I recommend this to anyone looking for a great CPU cooler :)

Cons: Installing it was a little pain in the rear for me, but it technically is my first time installing this kind of cpu cooler.

Other Thoughts: Would recommend to anyone looking for a cheap cpu cooler. Runs cold and quiet.

1 out of 5 eggsIT'S HUGE

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: I'm sure this thing cools like a beast

Cons: but.... it is BIG. REALLY BIG. Make sure you measure how much room you have, and if you have a side fan make sure to include space for that too.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel's Default cooling solution for the 4790k, at an extra price.

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: *One of the best air coolers around
*Very very very quiet fan included on it, you only hear it at full speed.
*Can be installed even after the PC is up and running (on a Level 10 GT at least.)
*Best cost-benefit ratio in my opinion, unless you're going to overclock a lot, it's not worth the extra 70 bucks to buy a water cooler that will lower temps only 10 degrees Celsius more than this air cooler will.
*Thermal paste included, so you are ready to install whenever you get it.

Cons: *Too big
*Too heavy
*Instructions with pictures alone aren't good for DIY starters, how could they know, quickly, the right position for the screws on a 1150, or a 2011-3. And how would they know how to move the screws up and down on the X piece to fit the mobo?
*Installation by amateurs can be painful. This is the first computer I build, and it took me 2 times (and uses of Arctic MX-4) to get it right, as the block is too heavy, and the X piece that attaches it to contact with the CPU has to be tightened into the motherboard in a uniform manner. But unless you read about it in a review, or saw a video, it would be too late until you knew that.
*It may block one (or more, if using a quad-channel motherboard?) memory slot

Other Thoughts: This fan is what Intel should include in the i7-4790k retail kit. Why?
Because I ordered it for this exact purpose. Didn't have enough money to go with an H100i, didn't want to spend too much money on an air cooled solution, and my stock temps on the stock cooler were around 50 degrees Celsius on IDLE, around 80 to NINETY on load/gaming with the IGP, throttled at 100 when using Realbench by ASUS.
When I saw how hot it was running, I remembered immediately of the time I was a clueless kid living in a hot city and managed to literally fry a CPU because I didn't care about dust or temps. After that I got away from laptops and temps above 70 on full prolonged load, as I learned my lesson.

Back story aside, this cooler is big, and so is my Level 10 GT case, so I didn't have a problem with THAT. However, I'm not sure if it has enough clearance for a memory slot beneath it (gaming memory with heatsink, regular memory should fit well), but then again, unless I use Chrome, I can't see myself using more than 8GB of the 16 I currently have, so that shouldn't be an issue for me. For the guys who rather use a 4x4GB scheme, it might be a problem.
As for temps, well, this thing DESTROYED Intel's cooler! I've applied some Arctic MX-4 on it (even though some people say that the paste included is good too, I went for the paste with warranty, so if it dries on the next few years, some Swiss guys are going to hear from me ;)
Now, on full load, benchmarking, this thing doesn't go above 75 degrees Celsius! Note that all these temps and tests were made on the gentle winter of New England, room temps around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, so if I kept Intel's cooler until the summer, my CPU would've blown (and this is a bad thing as I doubt Intel covers damage by their own cooler even on stock clocked CPUs)

If you have a 4790k, and heat became an issue, and you don't want to spend big bucks on an AIO, get this thing already.

4 out of 5 eggsbig one!

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: Does the job ; with a bit of overkill. What i mean the size of it and with the fan keeps my cpu at a brisk 30 c. with a load up to maybe 35. so like it for that. Had to think about this when i got it. Took some time install: best to us in a full case, its a tight squeeze in a mid.

Cons: This sucker is big.
