5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: perfect fit, work as described.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I needed to replace 2 older cdrw drives in 2 pc without having to spend lots of cash. I swapped the older one for these drives, and the comp recognized them;no problems.

the only thing, and its minor, is i wish they came with some decoding software. they are a great buy imo

5 out of 5 eggsGood cheap drive

Pros: It does what it says and it's pretty quiet. I don't hear it at all, but then, the air's almost always on. It shouldn't disturb you. And it's very fast.

Cons: Can't think of any. Some might consider the lack of a bundled Nero demo to be a con, but I personally hate Nero. I use CDRTFE (CD-R Tools Frontend) for burning music and ImgBurn for burning images and data discs.

Other Thoughts: This thing is a bloody phantom. I don't hear it and it doesn't have a light. If you tell it to burn and then go do something, even if you look back at the computer, you won't be able to tell it's burning. Then the program says it's done. Very nice.

5 out of 5 eggsGood ole IDE & Legacy Supporting Drive

Pros: A Reliable, multi-format, multi-mode DVD-RW drive with IDE support that is truly plug and play. No external drivers needed (though you will need CD/DVD authoring software). Burns all of the formats it lists without issue, supports true DAO burning and can overburn CDs without issues. Can author 90 and 99 minute CDs with the proper authoring software support. I have burned over 1000 discs on it and still going strong.

Also a great drive for keeping your legacy computers alive! I have purchased 3 of these over the years, and one is currently installed in a Celeron 833 Win 9x machine with no issues (just keep in mind in such a slower processor, don't try to burn a DVD at 16X... keep it around 4 to 6X or your processor can't keep up). As long as your OS and Bios support EIDE this drive should give you trouble free instalation and service.

Cons: None that I have.

Other Thoughts: If you need a drive for a legacy computer, or just a good fast, reliable drive and don't want to use a SATA slot, this is probably the drive for you. There are other comparable IDE supporting CD/DVD burners out there, but their numbers dwindle every day. This drive was great for it's price, it's even better when it has free shipping. I have burned DVD video, DVD 5, DVD 9, DVD RW both + and -, CD audio, CD-Video, VCD, and CDRW on these and it works flawlessly. I have not had a chance to try DVD-RAM, as I have nothing else that uses it.

1 out of 5 eggsWeird Compatibility Problem

Pros: Worked to install Windows on a customer's machine, and fine afterwards. This was an old VIA KT-600A based board. See "cons." When it works, it is quiet and really can burn above 16x on some DVD blanks. The maximum speed I saw was 20.1x.

Cons: Did not work properly on TWO of my machines, an Asus M2N-E SLI, my main machine, and an Asus M2N4-SLI, my test machine, both having nVidia nForce 500 SLI chipsets. In textmode, the first stage of Windows installation, it could not read the DVD. Once Windows setup got beyond this point (protected mode) it worked fine. I did not notice this strange behavior until I tried to reinstall Windows (any version) on my test machine. Then it wasted a lot of time, hence the low rating. The vendor did not respond to my questions about this. They either do not understand it, or do not believe it. More reasons for the low rating. The symptoms of the problem are seen when you boot on the Windows install disk. Usually nothing happens except a blank screen. If it goes further you eventually get a message that one or another file cannot be read, after ten or fifteen minutes. This changes every time you attempt an install. Again, the problem does not happen on all motherboards.

Other Thoughts: This is an odd problem. It is certainly the first time I have ever seen anything like this, but I carefully verified it on two machines. Perhaps a firmware update would fix it, however my sample has the latest version. I have not had problems with any other IDE device connected to these boards, and because I use them for service and testing, connect a lot of things to them.
