5 out of 5 eggsQuality drive

Pros: Extremely fast. Good price. One-stop-shop of drives.

Cons: Louder than I thought.

Other Thoughts: When it engages, it's the loudest part of my PC by far. But as I rarely use it, well worth the brief noise for the speed it provides.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well.

Pros: Works well as DVD player, I haven't tried to burn blue-rays yet seems like from other people's reviews you need some additional software.

Cons: I installed this in a Gigabyte GA-G41MT-S2PT motherboard and for whatever reason the MB only recognized it in SATA 1 position (slave) with the hard drive in SATA 0 position (master). It didn't recognize the drive in SATA 2 (master), maybe this is how it is supposed to work but it wasn't intuitive. When it was in the wrong position the drive would just turn the blue indicator light on and off at a regular interval non-stop.

Other Thoughts: I didn't need to install any other drivers to get this to function correctly.

1 out of 5 eggsSignal connector on back broke easily :(

Pros: Good price, good reviews.

Cons: I plugged in SATA signal & power cables and was testing the unit out during computer assembly. Due to system build issues, I had to unplug and take the unit out.

When I reinstalled, my signal cable wouldn't fit into the proper connector on the back of the Asus unit. I realized that the plastic housing around the metal leads, on the back of the Asus drive, had come off and was stuck inside my signal cable!

The drive and cable are now ruined. I have to throw both away :(

5 out of 5 eggsOEM

Pros: This is an awesome drive that works perfectly every time. Ignore the bad ratings.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I am really sick and tired of people complaining that it doesn't come with software. OEM, people. Supposedly people with a 5-bar tech rating. Ignore the bad reviews. Really. These are people who do not know what they are talking about.

1 out of 5 eggsIf it plays blu-rays, I'd never know

Pros: I'm sure this is a fine DVD drive, but I've never used it. It's for my home theatre media PC. It just sits there in my PC taking up space.

There's basically no software available to play blu-rays. This drive doesn't include anything (or advice on how to get blu-ray software).

Cons: Does not include any blu-ray software (and good luck finding blu-ray player software for a Windows 7 PC)

I'm not sure who deserves this 1-star rating - Microsoft for not bundling something with Windows? Sony for making life difficult on PC owners? Or ASUS for selling a hardware product without mentioning what might be needed to make the hardware work? Considering I coudl purchase a streaming internet-connect stand along blu-ray player for $60 at the same time I spent $52 for this drive, I'm going to give the 1-star to ASUS for poor value (or maybe it's Sony's fault for charging ASUS ridiculous licensing fees). I'll never know.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Einar,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. I certainly understand your concern regarding a Bu-Ray software or applications that is not available. There are freeware or shareware programs or software that you can always download online that will allow you to utilize the optical drive for Blu-Ray or DVD playback. If you need further assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N151106270 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

Rodel

4 out of 5 eggsSolid replacement for Win10 Compatibility

Pros: I was forced to replace my previous BD-ROM drive, because Win10 would not recognize it. This Samsung drive installed quickly and easily (it's a SATA drive, after all) and started up immediately under Win10. My primary use is ripping music and movies to my NAS server. Speed is adequate and accuracy is perfect, so far.

Cons: None, so far.

Other Thoughts: Seems strange that Win10 would "forget" a perfectly good BD ROM drive, but I'm not alone, based on what I've read from other users.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, but I couldn't use it to install Win10 onto a RAID system.

Pros: Works immediately after Windows setup. The one I received is quiet and operates smoothly. Blue LED was a nice surprise.

Cons: None, really - See below.

Other Thoughts: Firstly, I don't know if this is an issue with my particular set up. I bought this drive with a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P board.

My specific issue was that with a five disk RAID, this drive had to be on a SATA controller with one of the drives from the RAID set in order for the RAID to function across the two onboard SATA controllers. This resulted in the BIOS not being able to boot from a DVD/CD. The simple remedy was to install via USB. I don't see another feasible way around this that isn't overly complicated or time consuming.

Again, once Windows booted to the desktop, all was well. I didn't see any sense docking an egg for such a specific issue, especially with such an easy work-around

I let my gf figure out how to play Blu-rays. It took a brief search for "play blu ray on pc" and she was watching in minutes. Hint: You need (free) software.
