Pros: Unknown. It will play DVD's and read CD's but it will not play a Blue Ray DVD. It is suppose to be a plug and play unit according to ASUS support.

Cons: Will not play Blue Ray DVD's and that was the purpose of the purchase.

Other Thoughts: I tried it with Windows Media Player and Corel WinDVD Pro 11 software. Both would not accept the Blue Ray.

ASUS tech support said to return the optical drive.

I cannot find any drivers or software that will fix the problem although it sounds like a software issue. Any suggestions?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: This has been my optical drive since 2012. I've used it for many Blu-ray movies, downloading music to iTunes from CD's, and even writing OS ISO and music playlists onto disks. Every time I've used it, it's worked flawlessly.

Cons: Sometimes this drive randomly opens when I boot up my system, and usually refuses to stay closed until I have closed it a few times consecutively. I suspect it's faulty due to another piece of hardware in my computer, so no real complaint about this product here.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend it, built to last!

2 out of 5 eggsSoftware not included

Pros: hardware works as expected and does what it needs to. A good purchase for the price

Cons: software that is included does not support bluray disks. You have to find and install additional software in order to make use of watching any blu ray disks.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a decent purchase but keep in mind that you will need some software that is able to read and play the bluray.

Pros: none

Cons: it doesn't work. It worked long enough to install my OS onto the computer I was building, now for some odd reason my OS doesn't even recognize that it is even plugged in at all. any solutions?

2 out of 5 eggsWorks, but not very well, and extremely loud

Pros: Works okay for an optical drive

Cons: Extremely loud and slow, would not recommend.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for my new HTPC, knowing that I would like to play blurays on it, and once I heard how loud it was, I didn't even bother, I would not recommend this drive if noise level is important to you, because this drive is the loudest one I've ever owned.

1 out of 5 eggsAwful

Pros: none

Cons: everything, this drive is garbage.

Other Thoughts: I used a pretty extensive research program before purchasing a slew of parts for a computer build. I went through as many articles and user reviews as I could get my hands on. I am completely satisfied with every part that I purchased except for this one. In about a month I am now on my second drive after a surprisingly quick RMA process (based off of reviews that I read from this site). Neither drive that I've received has read a Blu-Ray or DVD, all that is present when the disk is inserted are data files regardless of the disk type. The drive is recognized in both Windows and BIOS. Every cord is installed correctly and I've downloaded the latest drivers. Now I have the option of either getting messed over on shipping prices AGAIN ($17 to ship from TN to CA) out of my own pocket to get potentially another defective part or scrapping the drive and buying from another site. Don't waste your money on this drive!

2 out of 5 eggsNoisy.

Pros: Works just fine to install software and burn CDs and DVDs.

Cons: About the noisiest optical drive I've ever worked with. I mean, really, really loud.

I found out that windows media player for windows 7 doesn't play Blu-Ray discs. Software that comes with the drive didn't help the situation.

Other Thoughts: In hindsight, I would not purchase this drive for my build. I was looking for a drive to burn DVDs and CDs, load software, and play films.

The drive will not play Blu-Ray films without 3rd party software as far as I can tell.

I should've saved some money and got a regular CD/DVD burner.

3 out of 5 eggsChecking the Warranty

Pros: Worked great and did its job for over nine months.

Cons: Less than ten months after purchase, it still plays CDs, but has completely ceased to recognize and play Blu-ray Discs, and although it will - RARELY - recognize DVDs, it won't play them.

Other Thoughts: Ordered this drive because I needed a BD drive, I had a promo code, and among other people ASUS seems to have a reputation for quality and reliability. Unfortunately, in my own experience, I haven't had quite the same luck, and this drive just serves to enforce my own previous experience. I'm going to be contacting ASUS, since it's still under warranty. Hopefully, it'll be taken care of, and if so, I just pray that it lasts more than nine months this time.
