1 out of 5 eggsasus does not back their product

Pros: None does not work

Cons: disc drive powers on, but does not read any discs. Called Asus technical support, they said only thing that I could do was to install the drivers. However, looking at asus support online, there are no available drivers. Then the guy told me to reinstall windows 7...waste of money and pathetic tech support

5 out of 5 eggsDecent BD-ROM

Pros: Works like a charm, never had a single problem with it in over a year.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Some people seem to be giving low stars because this BD-ROM doesn't play commercial blueray disks, but I guess they don't know anything about computers or blueray discs. You need to install the correct codexes for playback. This isn't hard to, or difficult to find steps for online.

2 out of 5 eggsMaybe I got an especially bad one, but...

Pros: Played DVDs well enough, and does play blu-ray disks if you have the right software to play it (FYI people, this won't play Blu-Ray movies if you don't pay for overpriced software than can play the disk, but it works just fine once you buy the software).

Cons: This thing worked well enough, save for a lot of the issues other people mentioned (the drive refused to stay closed half of the time, and I'd have to press the button to close the disk drive five or six times to make it stay closed). Most of these problems were annoying, but were okay to deal with. However, a problem less easy to deal with is that the drive caught on fire this morning at the place where the SATA power cable plugs in. I realize I may have gotten a bad one, but just an FYI for anyone thinking of buying one of these.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes its job

Pros: Its pretty fast, it read it writes.

Cons: The lack of software to actually play Blu Rays is Bull. So you have to pay another 100 bucks for software to do it.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid drive

Pros: Quick to install, no extra drivers, DVD burn speeds are good, and Blu Ray ripping speeds are fantastic.

After a week of use I haven't noticed much sound from this drive at all when reading or ripping blu rays. There's a slight whir from the DVD side, however it's still significantly quieter than my last few DVD-RW drives.

Cons: No issues so far.

Other Thoughts: As mentioned, this didn't come with any playback software. I'm okay with this as I preferred to use free libraries for playback and just use AnyDVD HD to decrypt the disks. If you want to be able to watch movies right away, spend the extra $50 and get the retail version of this drive, it'll save you quite a bit of money.

3 out of 5 eggsBig Moe

Pros: Works as advertised. Installation was pretty easy too. It is an OEM, it doesn't come with anything but the blu-ray player.

Cons: You will need a couple things extra to be able to watch the Blu-Ray movies.
1. AVI cable for the digital video transfer from your PC to the monitor.
2.The Blu-Ray player SOFTWARE. You'll need to buy this from somewhere and it aint cheap! Around $85 is what I found them to be. Microsoft Media Player wont work for Blu-Rays.

Other Thoughts: I got mine working with a free 30 trial software, the AVI wasn't to bad, only a few bucks. If I knew this prior to my purchase,
I might have just not got it, although watching blueray movies on my PC is kinda cool.

5 out of 5 eggsJust What I Expected, And It Works Great

Pros: This is my first PC build, so I did general research when selecting components. I haven't tried burning any disks yet, but far as playing goes, it does fine.

Cons: Doesn't come with any mounting screws.

5 out of 5 eggsFast DVD/BD Reader

Pros: No Riplock
Rips Bluray and DVDs beautifully.
Great Price

Cons: No Bluray playback software included, but this was expected... so its not really a con.

Other Thoughts: My sole purpose in buying this drive was to quickly start converting my DVD/Bluray collection to MKVs via Handbrake, before my kids scratched/wrecked them all. Price and performance were the keys, and this drive delivered.
