Sony and NEC have combined their optical expertise in the joint venture, Optiarc. The result is the Optiarc DVD and CD drive series.

With write speeds as high as 24X for DVD+R and DVD-R, they may be the fastest SATA optical drives in the industry. Even at these speeds, there's no need to worry about buffer under-runs, with 2MB of memory buffering your data. Optiarc's technology adjusts itself automatically to the small variations in each drive and each disc as it writes, giving optimum performance time after time. All the features you've come to expect in a modern DVD/CD burner: multiple media formats, inexpensive price, fast operation, and now backed by both Sony and NEC.

It's always your decision, but I wish I had a dead drive right now so I could replace it with one of these.

  • newegg DVD Multi Recorder The Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7240S-0B DVD burner enables users to burn any DVD+R/-R, DVD+RW/-RW or DVD-RAM disc and supports the dual-layer function allowing up to 8.5GB data to be burned and saved on a single dual-layer disc. Burn your own DVD/VCD movies or backup data with ease!
  • newegg 24X Ultra High Writing Speed With advanced burning technology, the Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7240S-0B DVD burner delivers a class-leading DVD+R/-R writing speed of 24X.
  • newegg Stable Recording and Reading Quality The Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7240S-0B DVD burner adopts cutting-edge technologies of Sony and NEC such as Adaptive Self Tuning to optimize performance for each disc, PRML (Partial Response, Maximum Likelihood) for minimized data error, and Front-end Digitalization for enhanced stability, achieving consistent recording and reading quality for the best user experience.

5 out of 5 eggsDVD drive

Pros: -Works well
-Low price

Cons: -Plastic is dark grey, not black

Other Thoughts: It sounds a bit like an airliner out on the tarmac, but it's spinning plastic around in there at up to 10,000 RPM, so I'll let it slide.

Overall, it's a great drive for DVDs.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what it is!

Pros: Very solid drive. Love the fact that it is shown by name(instead of the usual CDROM) in BIOS even when set as IDE. Must say I was impressed because all the other SONY drives I have ever owned, have either been DOA or crapped out in about a week.

Cons: Absolutely none so far.

Other Thoughts: Umm..wish it came with interchangerble faces? Lol.

1 out of 5 eggs2 months not working

Pros: nothing

Cons: worked for 2 months now does not have the ability to boot from a dvd or a cd,. i think i used this drive maybe three times, very upset with this

Other Thoughts: i read optiarc's are the best and i guess they are wrong, you get what you pay for, 20 dollar drive is only worth 20 bucks. not even worth fighting with sony or new egg to get a replacement. buy a good dvd drive for your rig, without it you will be helpless
