Sony and NEC have combined their optical expertise in the joint venture, Optiarc. The result is the Optiarc DVD and CD drive series.

With write speeds as high as 24X for DVD+R and DVD-R, they may be the fastest SATA optical drives in the industry. Even at these speeds, there's no need to worry about buffer under-runs, with 2MB of memory buffering your data. Optiarc's technology adjusts itself automatically to the small variations in each drive and each disc as it writes, giving optimum performance time after time. All the features you've come to expect in a modern DVD/CD burner: multiple media formats, inexpensive price, fast operation, and now backed by both Sony and NEC.

It's always your decision, but I wish I had a dead drive right now so I could replace it with one of these.

  • newegg DVD Multi Recorder The Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7240S-0B DVD burner enables users to burn any DVD+R/-R, DVD+RW/-RW or DVD-RAM disc and supports the dual-layer function allowing up to 8.5GB data to be burned and saved on a single dual-layer disc. Burn your own DVD/VCD movies or backup data with ease!
  • newegg 24X Ultra High Writing Speed With advanced burning technology, the Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7240S-0B DVD burner delivers a class-leading DVD+R/-R writing speed of 24X.
  • newegg Stable Recording and Reading Quality The Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7240S-0B DVD burner adopts cutting-edge technologies of Sony and NEC such as Adaptive Self Tuning to optimize performance for each disc, PRML (Partial Response, Maximum Likelihood) for minimized data error, and Front-end Digitalization for enhanced stability, achieving consistent recording and reading quality for the best user experience.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great the first few years, has started failing though

Pros: Worked perfectly fine for the first 2 years, but then it started developing problems

Cons: Aforementioned problems:

-Tray does not eject anymore. That's with the eject button on the actual unit, and trying to eject via UI

-Completely stopped reading any type of discs. The computer detects the drive just fine; it's visible to Windows and the BIOS, but no CD can be read at all

2 out of 5 eggsGood drive while it lasted

Pros: worked well, pretty quick, did what it needed to do

Cons: after almost 2 years of ownership, the drive will no longer open. I press the eject button and it sounds like its trying to eject but it remains closed. I try the emergency open but that barely works.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid Sony drives

Pros: It did work for a while.

Cons: Stopped working after a year and a half. Will not read any DVDs, and will only read some CDs, and even then only after a bit of coercing. Far as I can tell, something fell out of alignment. Not really fixable.

Other Thoughts: I tried to fix it myself, but couldn't figure it out. A little googling only told me this issue is VERY common with Sony Optiarc drives.
