Remember when you could buy a 100Mb drive for this price? Well, those days are gone, and good riddance!

Here's one terabyte of external storage you can plug into your eSATA or USB 2.0 port, compatible with Mac OS 10.2 or higher, and flavors of Windows from 98SE to Vista.

A heat-dissipating aluminum case provides sturdy protection for the drive system while the drive system provides protection for your valuable data with USB 2.0 transfer rates of up to 60 MB/s or eSATA transfer rates of up to 300MB/s. Video archives, backups, auxiliary storage; if you need it, this system will probably provide it! At a price like this, you might be able to afford two or more, and you know you'll need the extra storage next week.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent product...

Pros: Great looking appearance! Didn't include any (unnecessary) software as most drives do. Came formatted and blank.

Cons: Didn't include eSata cable as promised, which was a huge disappointment. The lettering on the case, which I don't care for, is damaged. Drive is a bit noisy.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I think this was a good purchase, but now I have to buy and wait for an eSata cable to come. I finally have an eSata compatible computer, and I want to use it.

1 out of 5 eggsQuality issues rampant

Pros: makes good paperweight

Cons: Completely unreliable..massive data loss!!
Poor Customer Service
Rebate and Warranties are scams

Other Thoughts: I have owned two of these drives for over a year, purchased separately from different retailler, so there is no coincidence here. Both of my rebates NEVER came and my inquiries were never returned. The controller cards burned out in BOTH units within 3-4 months of buying. They did replace initially under the warranty after 6 wks of having the drives and insisting that I not remove the drive for backup before sending yet they would make no assurances that my data (including tax records) would be safe or that confidential info would not be accessible to technicians or warehouse folks. However, just two weeks ago the board burned out AGAIN in one of the drives. Thats three bad boards in two drives in less than a year. This time they have refused to repair as I had to remove the drive to delete medical information before returning. They know the issue is their board but now they are using their warranty terms as an excuse to not even look at it unless I pay them $45

5 out of 5 eggsNo pre-installed firmware, GOOD

Pros: No pre-installed firmware or anything. The hard-drive came completely blank, except for a read-me file. It was formated as NTFS when I received it, which is what I wanted.

Cons: The hard drive must be plugged into the wall for power. This doesn't bother me at all, but it might bother some people.

Other Thoughts: Sturdy design. The metal case makes it seem pretty tough.

5 out of 5 eggsgood for the price

Pros: Sturdy, looks good, suits my needs as a backup drive. Drive was recognized as soon as i turned on the power, is formatted in NTFS. (Windows7 x64)

Cons: im only getting transfer rate of 25MB/s on USB 2.0. ordered a eSata cable, hopefully speeds will improve

Other Thoughts: id buy another

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome HD

Pros: Bought this external hard drive just over a year ago, and it has had no problems yet. I hooked it up as a home network storage unit, it is accessed daily from multiple computers and does the job flawlessly. You can play music right off of it and not even notice the file is on a external over a network. It is absolutely silent and the slight vibration it creates is isolated by the cradle provided. I keep it on 24/7/365 for data logging of a weather station and it hasn't failed yet, it does get warm at times but does not get hot. Transfer rates are great, about 1MB/s over wireless and up to 70MB/s over cable.

Cons: The blue LED light is annoying, but noting a little black electrical tape could solve. The AC adapter is a little "Fat" and may not fit an power strip unless it uses one of the ends.

Other Thoughts: I had to format the drive to NTFS from FAT when I first used it, though it didn't take long and was easy to do.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat sturdy drive

Pros: Great aluminum case
esata
no overheating
barely any noise
all at a reasonable price

Cons: space hogging power adapter
esata cable not included

Other Thoughts: a sibling dropped it about 5 feet onto the sidewalk and i though it was done for, however it still works like a charm. A testament to how sturdy it is and its build quality.

5 out of 5 eggsFast & Quiet

Pros: Fast transfer, runs quiet, recognizable, stays cool, price

Cons: i only got 1TB

Other Thoughts: I love this drive. I got it over a year ago to assist my Seagate Freeagent and I've since retired the FreeAgent Drive. This hdd is soooo quiet, I'm not sure it's on half the time. It stays cool after being permanently plugged in and connected to my desktop. It loads pretty fast for being full (938gb) and copying files is relatively quick, too. I constantly drag/drop off or onto this drive and it handles it well.

1 out of 5 eggsFollow Up On Previous Review

Pros: I gave this a good review before but it has now been about 6 weeks. Wow what a difference time has made. The on/off switch no longer works and the darn thing sounds like a freight train. I bought the extended from New Egg but did not realize that they wanted it returned in the original carton. Needless to say I threw that away after a this much time. MY mistake on that one. I will never buy from FANTOM again as their customer support is non-existant. Several phone calls with NO useful exchange and basically "we are sorry for your bad experience". I went on line and today and ordered a WD one terrabyte Passport. They are #1 seller in external HD's for a reason. I won't stray again from WD as they have always been great when a problem has arisen and their support is better than most. A $100.00 mistake but I have learned from it. Makes a nice paerweight and a constant reminder to me.

Cons: See above

Other Thoughts: NEVER AGAIN

5 out of 5 eggsI'm dual wieldin' fantoms like the frigate stage in goldeneye

Pros: Bought one of these almost two years ago. Loved it so much that I bought another. I'm about to get a third. Pros:

• Functional
• Fast (7200 rpm)
• Cool, even without noisy fans
• Has esata port
• Drive turns off when not in use
• Can't beat the price

Cons: My first one spins up slightly quieter and has the adapter brick mid-cable, whereas my second one has power brick at plug. Standard 12v 2A adapter, though, so I just use one from one of my other dead drives.

Other Thoughts: Drives that have died on me:
WD mybook 500gb
WD 500gb internal (2)
Rosewill enclosure
Seagate freeagent

Fantoms are the only ones that haven't disappointed me thus far. Go for it.
