1 out of 5 eggsSeagate Quality has Dropped.

Pros: Easy to use (when functional).

Cons: Separate power supply instead of strictly usb 3 for power, but I'm not docking any eggs because of little things like that. Drive only lasted 10 months with minimal to light use in a cool and stable environment. Bad sectors galore, drive not accessible, but at least the enclosure looks cool and can be reused for another drive.

Other Thoughts: I'm deeply concerned for Seagate, something must have happened in the last 5 years or so to their quality control. I used to have the best luck with their drives, and even have many from 2001 that still function like brand new despite YEARS of HEAVY usage. After a brief glimpse at the drive failure rates from backup providers like Backblaze it's clear that something is not up to par with Seagate drives anymore.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: when a hard drive dies in a year, it cancels out all the pros

Cons: It died in about a year.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Great

Pros: The activity light isn't annoying. Still in warranty. Did manage to get all but one file off.

Cons: Lasted 16 months as a DLNA server drive. Died a couple of days ago. Warranty site is currently down.

Other Thoughts: Used a few hours per day for 16 months before it started writing very slowly. Went to the closet and heard it seeking continuously. Immediately pulled files off it and managed to get all but one. Read speeds were as low as 355kB while getting data and had to unplug and plug it back in four times.

1 out of 5 eggsKeeps Disconnecting

Pros: Large storage space
Stylist design

Cons: Keeps disconnecting from Windows 7 during file transfers
Cannot be trusted with my sensitive data

Other Thoughts: I have disabled ALL USB power/sleep/hibernate functions in every place possible. I also have updated my motherboard's drivers.

My WD 1TB USB 3.0 I've been using for the past year does not have this problem. It is stable.

I own a wedding cinematography studio and I use this hard drive to backup my clients raw .mov wedding files. I can't trust the 3TB Seagate to backup their weddings. Each wedding has around 300GB of footage. What would happen if I lost all the raw footage I took from their weddings? Lifetime memories lost forever. For now, I'll stick with WD hard disks.

1 out of 5 eggsMy Recommendation Is To Stay Away From These Drives

Pros: Quiet, lots of storage space

Cons: It failed after 16 months. I returned it to Seagate, and they refused to honor the warranty. I'll never buy another Seagate drive.

1 out of 5 eggsHOT and Bad Sectors

Pros: It's quiet and stores a lot of data.

Cons: I'm not sure when it started to go downhill because even though the drive is failing, it gave no indication there was a problem. After my PC experienced a BSOD, I decided to run a program to check the health of my drives. The program stated that the health of the drive was down to 5% and would likely die soon, and that there were a ton of bad sectors. I've had the drive for about a year and a half, so it probably started failing after a year or less. I knew it ran hot (is always above 50 C), so I bought a fan and set it to blow on it, which seemed to help some, but I guess it must get a bit hotter when it's actually doing a backup, which has probably worn down the drive.

Other Thoughts: A drive that runs hot and lasts less than 2 years is not worth the hassle of buying. Some people might get a particularly hearty drive or find a better way to keep it cool (if that's even the only problem), but the risk of getting a bad one is too much. Fortunately, my drive is still under manufacturer warranty, so I'll send it back and hope the replacement is better. Once I'm out of warranty, I'll probably open the case and put the drive in something that will actually keep it cool.
