2 out of 5 eggsLovely while they worked

Pros: 3tb per drive.

Cons: Of the two drives purchased here on New Egg, and the three purchased elsewhere, all drives lasted beyond their first year, and none beyond their third. All drives demonstrated identical mechanical failure sound: spin-click-reset, spin-click-reset.

Other Thoughts: I'd read the reviews of problems with these drives and needed quick short-term storage, so I took a risk and paid the price for it.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Brand!!!!

Pros: NONE!!!!

Cons: I have had absolutely no luck with seagate drives! I warn you it will fail . Everycone I have purchased in the last 10 years has failed and I have lost all my data. Buy at your own risk! They are the worst drives ever. None of my other brand drives have ever failed! None! in all the others I have owned in 20 years!

3 out of 5 eggsWas a good drive...then turned to RAW drive!

Pros: I bought this drive because of the best cost per mb that was out there at the time. For the amount of storage you get for the cost you will spend, it is hard to find a lower value.

Cons: You get what you pay for. If you just want some quick storage and don't have much to spend this drive might work for you. My drive only lasted about two years before it turned into a RAW drive. Also this drive runs HOT (69 deg C) on average (according to S.M.A.R.T. data). The drive started to have problems mounting (Running Windows 7), and soon it asked to format the drive! Checked in the system disk management and the drive was now "seen" as a RAW drive (needing to be reformatted before it could be used). I knew that I had about 1TB of data on this drive that I needed to get back (and I did...see "Other thoughts").
After getting all the data back off the hard drive, the drive now sits on my desk as a reminder about Seagate drives...

Other Thoughts: A program called "Hard Disk Sentinel" was used to verify and track the temperature of the drive. Also used a program called "Zero Assumption Recovery", which was able to scan the drive, retrieve the data and then transfer the saved data to a different hard drive.
So if your drive mounts under Windows as a RAW drive, and you know that the drive contains data that you want to keep...don't format it yet!

1 out of 5 eggsBought two: Both Failed

Pros: Was a good amount of space for the price at the time of purchase (Feb 2013).

Cons: Bought two: One failed after one year, Seagate replaced under warranty. The other failed after two years just after warranty expired. They weren't used heavily. One was used to store media for a media center. The other was the backup of the first one.

1 out of 5 eggsseagate is the worse company

Pros: nothing, just an average drive

Cons: died in 1 year. called their customer service. they said they don't cover the drive in drive. seriously? it's YOUR product that crapped out my data. and now you don't even replace the defective product?

Other Thoughts: i have never had a hard time replacing any drive under 3 years old. seagate just set me straight that there are horrible warranty service and they're one good example.

2 out of 5 eggsDrive Failure at 18 months

Pros: Easy to setup and quite

Cons: Luckily this drive failed gracefully and I was able to move my data before it completely died. Also it was still under warranty. Hopefully the replacement will live longer.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate Backup Plus 3TB Prone To Failure

Pros: When it was working, external hard drive was a bargain at $99.

Cons: I have had two Seagate 3TB external drives fail within two months. I bought both from Newegg in November 2012. The problems started when I changed computers, attaching them to a new Dell Windows 7 desktop some two months ago. Maybe the movement was too much but now both hard drives are busted. Using Active@File Recovery software, I managed to transfer most of the data to Seagate 2TB slim USB powered external hard drives. Hopefully these new drives don't conk out after just over two years. I will never buy a Seagate with an odd number of platters again. The new Seagate 2TB slim drives are apparently Samsungs.

Other Thoughts: Nothing lasts forever.

3 out of 5 eggsFailed Right as Warranty Ended

Pros: Fast & Reliable (up until the day it failed)
Large storage capacity
Small container.

Cons: The drive failed as soon as the 2 year Seagate warranty was over.

Other Thoughts: Leading up to the drive failing, there were no warning signs. It was working great one morning and by the evening read / writes were no longer functioning.

All recovery attempts failed. The data simply could no longer be read and the drive was phasing in and out of being recognized by the OS.

The drive lasted a good 2 years which is about the lifetime I've come to expect from bargain price electronics. It's a shame that I was not able to recover any of the data, but in this day and age most important things are backed up online anyways.

2 out of 5 eggsWas great until last night

Pros: Had brought this drive a little over 2 years ago for $180. was transferring files overnight, woke up and it was off. It wouldn't turn back on again. Worked perfect for the time being, used it just to backup files. Surprise to see no dust has built up inside of it since i got it. Drive stayed on the table and never fell.

Cons: Failed

Other Thoughts: I took out the drive from the enclosed and have it to see if it was the disk drive itself or the power from the drive that died.
