5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good little drives. Can be very worthwhile ($/gb) depending on sale. I own two of these; they're pretty quiet and seem reliable to me. USB 3.0 attachment, so they're actually fast (unlike USB 2.0 external drives). The drive and the base are separate pieces, so you can swap out drives without screwing around with cables. That was the draw for me--I needed to carry a backup between two desktops so I was able to setup a base at each and then swap the drives each week. Also, you can attach most any SATA drive directly to the dock if you need quick access to the data.

Cons: All plastic, of course. The drive side of things, the SATA power & data connectors are too deep in to access with ordinary cables. I had to shave off plastic from a power & a data cable to make 'em fit. Also, since the dock SATA was offset, you had a gap when plugging in a bare drive

Other Thoughts: Use 'em as intended and you've got a nice system. If you want to do the same thing as I did, you only gotta futz with the drives themselves.

1 out of 5 eggsTwo warranty replacements already

Pros: It's big

Cons: I've had to replace it twice under warranty through Seagate within a year.
-The first one started clicking like crazy and throwing read errors. Got it replaced before it died completely
-The second one just died completely. Drive still spins up, USB not recognized.

Other Thoughts: I have a bunch of other external drives in the same location from other manufacturers that have been running 3+ years without issue. This one is the largest and the biggest hassle.

1 out of 5 eggsWill not work with Windows Backup on Windows 7

Pros: Size

Cons: Does not work with Windows Backup to create a system image. Seagate even acknowledges this (web search for 8078002a 3tb seagate) and they won't make a fix for it. However, Western Digital rolled out a fix for this issue and of course their 3TB drive works with Windows Backup after running their program (it formats the drive in a specific way).

Other Thoughts: Would not have bought this drive had I known the above, but can't return it since I had done a manual backup on it and therefore there are remnants of those files on the backup even if I format it.

5 out of 5 eggs3 TB review

Pros: lotsa tb. own two, on sata one usb.

Cons: the seagate usb drive has no power switch...turns on when senses usb power.

Other Thoughts: good experience so far...a little trickey getting the 3tb sata version to go gpt instead of mbr. windoze on ssd, but data on 3tb partition, and ubutu on separate partition on th 3tb.

5 out of 5 eggsNICE EXTERNAL

Pros: I have a Seagate USB 3.0 1TB, 3TB, 4TB & a 2nd 4TB external drive due to arrive shortly. I have been impressed by their transfer speeds in both directions. Using TeraCopy to copy & move files to & from these drives using USB 3.0 ports, I have found that the transfer speeds are very close to the speed of my newer internal drives, and at least 10% faster than the oldest of my internal drives.
They are all easy plug & play. My oldest drive is almost a year old. None have given me any problems so far
They are much faster & easier to use than another brand external USB 3.0 drive I have..
My computer is a multi-boot setup; XP, Win7 & Win8. These drives work great with all 3 operating systems.

Cons: Possibly the backup software. See Other Thoughts.

Other Thoughts: The backup software that came with my 1TB drive was very basic & limited; although Seagate says there is a better version for download free from their site. I have not tried the “better” version or the versions on the later drives because I do not want multiple backup formats. All of my compressed backups use a 3rd party paid backup product.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Functions as advertised with USB 3. Simple setup, fair software.

Cons: HOT! Monitored with Hard Disk Sentinel shows rapidly elevating temperature even in modest 70 deg ambient. Goes to high 40s C fast at which point I have completed use and turn off. Plan to only use limited time. As a reliability engineer we know this will lead to rapid failure as reported in these reviews.

Other Thoughts: Wonder if anyone has managed to keep this model cooler in extended operation.

1 out of 5 eggsabslute FAIL DO NOT BUY!!!

Pros: good for self defense armor , and ranged attack, not as good as a rock though.

Cons: USB 3.0 runs at about 3mb/s
unmountable on my mac, and my router.

Other Thoughts: I had this swapped out for new ones 3 times now. If i only use it on my windows machine, ive can keep them alive for maybe 48hours each before i start to have trouble. all 3 of the drives that I got, had problems on my USB 3.0 ports, to the point that i had to plug them into my USB 2.0 ports to work.
The Drive it self wouldnt mount at all on my macbook, or on my Asus, or Linksys routers. and had constant mount and unmounted problems on my Ubuntu box.

1 out of 5 eggsGuaranteed to fail

Pros: Price when purchased.

Cons: Failed at 6900 hours/288 days of "power on" time. Failure rates on Segates are almost a guarantee.

Other Thoughts: Do not purchase these for long term backup. These WILL fail. Use mostly for temporary storage.
