5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works great, hasn't failed. Used in a mirrored drive setup (needed to buy the same drive as one I already owned).

Cons: Not a WD drive?

5 out of 5 eggsPS4 upgrade

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works! Upgraded my PS4 to 1TB. Woo!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I put this in my PS4, upgrading the existing 500GB drive. (I put that one in my PS3). Upgrading a PS4 is super-easy. You don't even backup the existing drive (everything gets installed from the cloud after you login the first tme with the new drive). SUPER IMPORTANT TIP: When you get the PS4UPDATE.PUP file from Sony, you need the 795MB version. There is a 202MB version which is the "update", but you can't use that one for a fresh install. Make sure you have the 795MB version. They have the SAME FILENAME which makes it tricky. Also, you have to get the version you were on (or newer) before you removed the drive. Somehow the PS4 knows what version was on the drive you removed (it's stored in BIOS somehow). Otherwise, follow the instructions. The flash drive (or USB hard drive works also) has to be formatted FAT32. The folder structure and filename have to be upper-case, like this: \PS4\UPDATE. You can have the PS3 folder on the same hard drive, that's fine. Also, you can use a Mac to download the files, just make sure the drive that has the files is formatted FAT32. I have a 300GB USB hard drive that has \PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP, \PS3\EXPORT, and \PS4\UPDATE\PS4UPDATE.PUP all on the same drive. (Export is used on PS3, on which you DO have to backup and then restore). If you do a PS3, the PS3UPDAT.PUP (yes, there is no E) is the SAME for upgrading or replacing), and it's also around 200MB.

Summary:
PS4: No backup needed. Get PS4UPDATE.PUP that is 795MB, not the 202MB version used for updating existing systems.
PS3: Backup and Restore required. Get PS3UPDAT.PUP, which is 200MB and there is only one version.

Also, most online benchmarks indicate that a SSD hard drive is not a good upgrade on a PS4, as there is very little performance gain. Better to get THIS drive and get 1TB for under a Benjamin.

Good luck!

3 out of 5 eggs3 Year Lifespan

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast and reasonably priced.

Cons: Samsung warranties these 1TB hard drives for two years; I have had two fail, one at 2 years 7 months, and the most recent failure at 2 years 10 months. I'm done with Samsung 2.5" drives.

3 out of 5 eggsIncompatible with 2011 Macbook Pro

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: N/A see below

Cons: Incompatible with my laptop

Other Thoughts: I cannot really evaluate the hard drive because it seems to be incompatible with my Macbook. Since the drive I'm replacing is a 3.0Gb/s drive with an 8MB cache and 5400 RPM spin rate, I'm really perplexed as to why it shouldn't be compatible. I can boot from the drive if it is hooked up through SATA to USB, but not if it is connected directly through SATA in the laptop. It seems like a fine piece of hardware, but I am quite disappointed that my laptop refuses to boot from it unless it is through USB.

5 out of 5 eggsPS4 Works Great

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Popped into my PS4 and replaced the 500gb hdd. Its working splendidly so far.

Cons: None so far, 5400rpm i spose but that comes with the territory of cheap 1TB notebook hdds.

Other Thoughts: Be careful when following the upgrading your PS4 hdd. Sony's instructions on reinstalling the firmware links to an out of date version of the OS which leads the PS4 to reject the reinstall if you're system is up to date. It becomes a bit of a hassle to track down the right firmware file.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Smarter Than The Average Bear

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap,
Drive died withing 3 months of use, started with bad sectors then no more drive. RMA'd. I Should have "paid" more attention to the reviews. I won't be using the replacement drive for anything important or that would cause problems. I'll buy REAL Seagate from now on. It's worth the extra. If you want a 1tb drive get the ST1000LM014. More bucks but a lot faster and more reliable.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works great, is pretty fast for only 5400 RPM.
Because this was high capacity, I put a fan directly on it.

Higher capacity drives have more platters (discs), which is more weight on the motors, and the motors get hot.

Cons: Airflow required to have long life.
I put this in a custom media center PC.

Other Thoughts: See bad reviews. Those people either didn't setup their SATA drivers correctly, don't have proper airflow, or both.

Loses one egg for not being able to put a fan into laptops.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't last and slow

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 1TB Price

Cons: Bad sectors started after 16 months, finally died a week later. Drive was really slow as well. I would not buy one of these again.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Good

This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 (HN-M101MBB/EX2) 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I can't give a positive for this drive.

Cons: Died after 8 months.

Other Thoughts: As a Microsoft Systems Administrator I thought I could ignore all of the bad reviews. That was a mistake. I used this drive (Manufactured in 2001) as a backup drive. When the drive stopped due to a hardware error that even SpinRite was unable to recover. I lost 8 months of backups. Not good, fortunately I had time to get a hopefully reliable drive (not this one) to replace this one and then create new backup files. Under warranty I was sent another hard drive of the same manufacturing batch. This drive is obsolete and is no longer manufactured. You get what you pay for. Buyer Beware.
