5 out of 5 eggsGreat Media Storage

Pros: Got this for my Media Server and humming along 24/7 for 4 months now.

Cons: None - Because I know what to use these drives for.

Other Thoughts: Just wanted to put my two cents worth in on the complaints about these larger capacity drives that are "Green". They are best for storage and not primary OS drives, thats why they are 1-2tb. Who needs a 1.5tb primary drive? If you want a HDD for an OS (Server or PC) get a fast SATAII or SSD and you will get the snappy performance you so desire. Use these drives for storage, even in a RAID setup they work GREAT!

1 out of 5 eggsAffordable, But Not Reliable

Pros: Affordable for 1.5tb drive, quiet.

Cons: Installed it into a new i7 system, used it for four months when it suddenly died with no warning, parameter errors. It took a lot of files with it. A great example as to why you should always back up important files, to which I neglected to do.

Other Thoughts: Samsung seems to be willing to RMA it, but it still is going to cost me to ship it. Ive had Maxtor and Western Digital HDD's, and they have always covered S/H if there was a problem within warrenty. In that time I've had just a few go bad with both of these manufacturers, Maxtor even shipped me a replacement drive before I shipped the bad one back to them, now that was service!

From what I have read about similar problems from other users, if I get a replacement drive from Samsung I will just end up using it as a secondary drive now and back even that up!

Im not impressed with Samsung and their HDD's. I do love their monitors, they might need to just stick with making them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Harddrives at the Best Price

Pros: Great hard drive, I have 3 of, the oldest over a year old. All perform flawlessly. I check the drives periodically with software like Speedfan, and they are in good shape.

Cons: 1.5tb hard drives under $100 that work like they should? What cons can you have for that?

Other Thoughts: I think most people who have hard drive issues have the following issues:

Improper Installation - Breaking off piece of the board on the hard drive is bad.

Hot cases - If you have 1 80mm fan exhaust fan that has 3 inches of dirt on it, its not going to cool the hard drives and they will fail.

Sports - Hockey, Baseball, Football, Basketball and possibly even Curling are detrimental to your hard drive. Don't throw or drop it, its pretty simple.

Other hardware/software issues.

Can 10-20% of all hard drives ever made be faulty? It seems more reasonable that 10-20% of the people installing them are messing them up.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet & Cool Drive

Pros: 1. Large Capacity
2. Cool Temperature
3. Very Quiet
4. Very good transfer rates
5. 3 Year Warranty and easy processing should you ever need to use the warranty process.
6. Uses less power than many other hard drives.
7. Samsung makes some of the best quality hard drives on the market. I've been buying them for about 10 years now and never regretted a single purchase.

Cons: This is not a high speed drive. Not really a Con but to some folks it could be so they should look for a different drive. This drive is not a "NAS rated" drive. It works fine for a slower home NAS, just not for heavy company use.

Other Thoughts: This quiet and cool running drive is perfect for a home NAS application or if you just wanted to replace your current hard drive with something that doesn't sound like a jet engine, or maybe add an aditional storage drive to your computer.

Just some friendly advice: Never use a hard drive as your final backup device, they all can and will eventually fail. You should backup your important data to CD/DVD media periodically.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not stand up to real use

Pros: Low Cost, High Capacity

Cons: Extremely high likelihood of failure. I'm two for two on drives that died within months of installing them in a media center PC. The first time it was within the RMA period, but the second time was 4 months, just outside the RMA period. The drives were installed properly in a well-cooled system, and slowly filled up to about 70% data capacity. The first one died with NO WARNING WHATSOEVER, and took a fairly extensive media collection down with it. This one, I at least got S.M.A.R.T. notification from Windows that the drive was going bad. It remains to be seen if anything can be salvaged from it.

Other Thoughts: Bottom line: Don't put anything you care about on these.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally, a 1.5 that works

Pros: Finally, a 1.5 TB drive that works. Tried the others (those reasonably priced around the $100 price range) and they failed to perform.

These work nicely standalone or in RAID.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Haven't had to RMA a drive to Samsung yet, but I hope it is fairly easy.

Samsung is my new HDD provider...

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet and solid

Pros: Sturdy, attractive case, quiet, like the power knob.

Cons: nothing yet.

Other Thoughts: I just use this to feed a WD Live box. No complaints at all.

3 out of 5 eggsGood drive, poor packaging

Pros: Good, decent drive for the money. Not the fastest, but quiet, low power and head - great for multidrive servers. This is 10th Samsung drive I order.

Cons: Newegg packaging is degrading. Drives slide back an forth in a shipping box. There wasn't enough foam pebels in a box to prevent sliding and hitting box walls. Drives now ship in a cardboard enclosures that don't hold them secure, instead of air-bubbled wrapping that worked much better. After taking the cardboard enclosure out of the box, one of the drives just slide out and fell on the desk. Still works, but be warned you may not be as fortunate. Would be 5eggs if not for the new NewEgg's packaging.
