5 out of 5 eggsGreat.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: First time buying a drive in 10 years. Its been a year since I have purchased and have not had an issue. A little tricky to make the drive the full 3 TB. MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE PARTITION STYLE FROM "MBR" TO "GPT". Do this before installing anything on this drive. Using MBR will only allow 2.2TB.

Cons: none

3 out of 5 eggsDidn't last long

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: High capacity. Reads pretty fast.

Cons: I've had this drive for about 2 years now. It worked really well but it seems like it didn't last as long as I wanted it to. Drive died all of sudden. Had this drive almost filled up and that's when it decided it wanted to die on me.

Other Thoughts: 1TB Western digital drive with my operating system on it that I've had longer than this drive is still going strong. Seagate said they would recover the data $500 so do yourself a favor and make sure you buy a drive that's built last especially if you want to keep the same drive for a long time.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: Large capacity, included software to allowed XP to utilize the drive, has worked flawlessly for over a year and no bad sectors. It was also less expensive than comparative brands.

Cons: Not silent and runs a bit warm. Given the price I expected these things.

Other Thoughts: The drive is used in a general purpose home PC. Formatted (NTFS) with two partitions totaling 2736GB.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: Worked great for roughly a year, then it died, and manufacturers warranty ran out the next day, but they extended it and worked with me to get a new drive within a couple days.

Cons: it died right at the warranty date...

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: Good while it lasted. Ran quiet and cool

Cons: Unrecoverable disk errors and SMART failures at just past 1 year of use. Am RMA-ing with Seagate.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: Fairly decent speeds, would be better with more of them in a good array. No real issues with the drive

Cons: Never large enough.
Could use more cache.

Other Thoughts: Great drive, I am overall really happy with it.

2 out of 5 eggsIt Died

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: Large Capacity - Fast - Quiet

Cons: Drive was delievered on Feb 25 as part of a new build and as of March 15, it's already failed. It didn't even make 20 days of use before failing.

Other Thoughts: Thankfully, I lost no data since I don't trust any drive until 90 days have passed and this one failed in 20. It's annoying when Windows Updates forces a reboot and the system hangs because a drive is no longer responding.

In my experience, drives either fail within 90 days or they live forever - I've still got working IDE drives that are over 20 years old but the newest ones don't seem to be as well built.

2 out of 5 eggsAnother One Bites the Dust

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: Was a good-egg price at the time of purchase

Cons: 3rd Seagate Desktop drive to fail in last 2 months

Other Thoughts: While Seagate will replace drives under warranty, the replace them with USED/Reconditioned drives! What a pile! Have a mix of Seagate, WD-RED & BLACK, and Hitachi drives in my Windows Home Server and only the Seagate drives are reporting sector errors and total failure. I can't believe they are still in business with these cheap drives made in China that fail so often. I've spent many lost hours of productivity rebuilding my home server because of these! Be warned.

4 out of 5 eggsIncorrect model number in firmware

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit -Retail kit

Pros: Price, size, performance.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: It should be noted that the firmware incorrectly identifies this HDD as model "ST3000DM001-1CH166" when in fact, it is model "STBD30001000" which has implications when users attempt to query drive in the seagate firmware finder website. The incorrect model is not in their database and will error out when users attempt to query it + their serial number. Using the "STBD..." model number does work. For those interested, mine has firmware version CC29 and according to the seagate database, this is current.
