4 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review of Replacement STBD3000100

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: Large capacity - Have used a little more the 1/3 of it's capacity over the 24 months the replacement has been in use. It's also very quiet as the first one had lots of noticable seek noise and may have been one of the STBD3000DM001 series with the flawed firmware.

Cons: Drive was delievered on Feb 25 as part of a new build and as of March 15, it's already failed. It didn't even make 20 days of use before failing.

Other Thoughts: Replacement has been in continous use since March 30, 2014 without issues. As I don't normally trust a drive until 90 days has passed, this one's been problem free since then. Currently the system is now in a RAID 1 array with a Toshiba as the mirror.

1 out of 5 eggsHard to set up and doesn't seem to work.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: Large size and fair price

Cons: I have had to format the drive several times but it still won't accept and hold any data. Expansion using Seagate Disk Wizard seems easy to use but changes don't seem to take and allow disk to accept and hold any back up from three different programs.l I think it is a dead drive after only 10 hours of attempted use. Is vibrating and making noise now at times too and computers can't detect it or see it or else ask to format it again.

Other Thoughts: I won't purchase another one and don't recommend it at all either.

1 out of 5 eggsBad drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: -none

Cons: -Was over $250 brand new ~3 years ago.
-Was not very fast
-SMART stopped working, and cannot check temperature after 3 years of use.
-Warranty too short expensive HDD
-Once SMART failed to query the disk caused very long POST times and even longer boot times on Linux and Windows. (even though the disk is not being used, only attached to system).
-Randomly requires the OS/Kernel to issue restart commands when accessing partitions on the disk. Causes 30+ second kernel mode delay effectively putting system into a softlock until the disk is restarted. Happens several times an hour.

1 out of 5 eggsBoth drives died in less than a year

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: worked well before failure

Cons: No warning of failure, just died. Luckily I backed up my data elsewhere, but this is unacceptable.

3 out of 5 eggsDont buy just because its a "Barracuda"

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: specs are decent,
7200 rpm
2 yr warranty is better than 1 year.
It comes in Seagate packaging, though mine was visibly damaged.

Cons: This is a ST3000DM001 drive sold as a kit. The kit consists of Seagate packaging. I didn’t get any drive software that is supposed to come with a kit (per Seagate)

Other Thoughts: This is the same drive as the "Desktop" bare drive model. Even the photo no longer references being a "Barracuda" drive. Apparently this is just a marketing ploy to get an extra $15 from you. It appears that the desktop bare drive only carries a 1 yr warranty. Its your call...

I did not know this was the same drive.

1 out of 5 eggsCrapped out After Warrany

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: Not much at all

Cons: Has 2 year limited warranty. 5 months after warranty expired and with no warning it failed. Left computer running, came back from a trip to the movies and drive letters for this drive were missing. Rebooted and BIOS bootup stopped at hard drive failure imminent, back up data and replace the drive.

Well, there was no stat to back up, the hard drive will not come on line, tried new cables and tried different SATA slots. It's dead. From no warning and passing hardware diagnostics 2 day prior to dead. It does spin up, but is dead.

Luckily I always backup to my 3T and 4T USB 2.0 external hard drives and just did so days ago, so no data is lost. But it is sad we are now supposed to expect about 2-3 years for HDs. Back before China made most of the HDs we consume, I remember drives lasting decades. Now the are disposable throw aways good for a few years. Normally months after the "warranty"

Sure, large drives are cheap compared to just 5 years ago, but I would pay more for more stable, longer lasting equipment. It's sad we HAVE to keep daily and or weekly backups on 2nd or even 3rd drives to ensure our data isn't lost (i am not giving up my personal data to a "secure" cloud)

Other Thoughts: NOT buying another Seagate

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: Lots of space, sometimes on sale for a reasonable price.

Cons: Bought 3, one just died after 1y 10m of 24/7 service with 2680 reallocated sectors.

Other Thoughts: The other 2 drives running in the same environment have no reallocated sectors, they have a different DOM then the 1 that failed so hopefully they are from a better batch.

Just ordered 2 more to replace and expand the raid array, so far so good.

1 out of 5 eggs*** DO NOT BUY ***

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Kit Retail Kit

Pros: Pros: good value per TB, if the drive worked

Cons: Cons: Drive failed within three days of install. Catastrophic failure, not recognized by any OS.

Other Thoughts: I owned this drive for about 30 months before I ever installed it. Purchased in November 2012 and stored since then. Thought it was a sound purchase at the time, but I'll go back to Western Digital after this experience.
