1 out of 5 eggsAnother drive dead 5 weeks after warranty expired

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Inexpensive and fast

Cons: This drive had operated well for 2 years 1 month, and 1 week.
All S.M.A.R.T. readings were OK
After a system reboot, the drive went offline and after investigating, I noted that the drive was powering up, clicking a few times, and then powering down.
All without any S.M.A.R.T. warnings.

I am so glad that I back my data up to other drives.
The unfortunate thing, is that my data is backed up to Seagate drives.

Other Thoughts: I think I am going to have to find another drive vendor.
I just purchased a WD 4TB NAS, and hopefully I get a bit longer operational life out of that one

5 out of 5 eggsjust awesome

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 2 years and still going. fast, reliable and quiet

Cons: not sure yet

Other Thoughts: It does sound bit different than WD so you need to get used to it. definitely you should use GPT over MBR and AHCI over IDE. I hope you have same luck with it

5 out of 5 eggsBig & inexpensive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: For an inexpensive backup solution, you just can't beat these Seagate drives. They work well with GNU/Linux & I have had no issues with them. Whether in a RAID, LVM, or on their own, these drives are great value.

Cons: Warranties seem to be getting shorter.

Other Thoughts: Everyone seems to have a personal preference with respect to hard drive manufacturers, which was usually the result of a drive failure & data loss, or multiple drive failures. Drive will fail. I've had Seagate drives fail, but I just keep coming back because I have reasonable backups. Do you have reasonable backups?

1 out of 5 eggsDied 2 months out of waranty

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Typical Seagate drive, they usually just work.
This drive had little degradation over it's 2 year 1 1/2 month life.
S.M.A.R.T data showed that it was in good shape overall at about 93% rating.
This morning it was dead.

Cons: No warning failure. Fortunately I had a backup

Other Thoughts: I think I am going to start trending away from Seagate. 2 years per drive somewhat less that I hoped for.

1 out of 5 eggsNail on the head

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large and cheap at the time.

Cons: Failed 2 weeks after warranty ended.

Other Thoughts: Not sure whether I'm happy, sad, or appalled that I'm not the only one with this issue but it had been making strange noises its whole life. No performance issues but I guess I should have RMA'd anyway. I have a WD green that came in a gateway I purchased two years previous to the Seagate and it's still going strong (and w/ much heavier use.) Now I face a dilemma as I also have 2 Seagate externals. Is it only a matter of time?

5 out of 5 eggsGood Cheap Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have a couple of these, and work with others at work. I gave up a long time ago on "trustworthy" drives. I get two cheap drives and hope to avoid simultaneous failures. These drives are cheap and fast. Buy two from different stores so they are at least a little different in production, and set them up as a mirror array. I own about a dozen of these drives, all in redundant arrays and none has failed *yet*

Cons: The closet I can come to a con is that the 4TB version is slow as heck, so I stick with the 3TB version. This review is for the 3TB, so that really does not apply here.

1 out of 5 eggs2nd hard drive dead in less than 6 months.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It was nice when it worked. The online customer Returns is straight forward and easy to submit.

Cons: I bought this hard drive to use in a Rosewill external case to put all my movies on in my home theater room. It barely gets used. The first one died in about 2 months after I bought it. No biggie. I returned it using the online form. Seagate sent me out another one, Recertified after they received it. Now the 2nd one died after 4 months of use. Again, I barely use it except on the occasion I watch a movie in my home theater. While it is still under warranty, I don't want to keep doing this over and over. I should have stuck with Western Digital Black. Never had any issues with it. But a friend highly recommended the Barracudas. So I thought I give them a try. Never again.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed right after warranty expired!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked until the warranty expired, then the click of death happened

Cons: shortly after warranty expired - the click of death happened! planned obsolescence at work!

Other Thoughts: failed shortly after warranty expired, planned obsolescence at work!

Buy WD or Hitachi hard drives instead!
