2 out of 5 eggsBought two in July 2012, both have errored out

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: They were cheap when I bought them in July 2012.

Cons: They both started getting hardware errors at almost the exact same time just over two years later. Killed an OS on one of the drives, and the other one is erroring in my NAS.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Maybe you can use it for a big swap partition?

Cons: Laughably unreliable. Bought 4 and 3 are now dead. Lost a RAID to it.

Don't gamble. Go with HGST instead.

Other Thoughts: I should have just bought HGST or WD or anything else, really.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed Spectacularly

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Price

Cons: Performance

Other Thoughts: Outlived its warranty by a few months and then physically failed, taking lots of data with it. Not reasonable to have to purchase a new backup every couple years, very disappointed with the performance of this drive to say the least.

1 out of 5 eggsDIed after format

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Send new drive before receiving defective drive?

Cons: Drive died after trying to initialize and format. Used Seagate tools to check drive and failed tests

Other Thoughts: Sea gates return policy lets them send you a new drive before they get the bad drive. Not happy I have to pay return shipping for the old drive. I mean it was pretty much DOA so why should I have to pay return fees? In all fairness never had a problem with Seagate drives before this but I guess out of the millions they sell it's bound to happen once in a while.

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Was cheaper than the competition. Not noisy like my Hitachi Deskstar.

Cons: Had intermittent problems early on, which I mistakenly blamed on the motherboard and finally quit working 4 months out of warranty. Will not buy another Seagate product again.

Other Thoughts: The 2 year warranty says it all. Stick with manufacturers who stand behind their products.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Capacity
Speed

2TB MBR Partition
210 MB/s - Sequential Read/Write

~746GB Extended Capacity VHD
150 MB/s - Sequential Read/Write

The first 2TB partition has a minimum sequential speed equal to that of the beginning of the extended capacity section, meaning that roughly 75% of this drive will maintain sequential speeds over 150 MB/s. That's pretty good.

If only this drive would have worked for me, I would have loved it and given it 5 stars, and recommend it to others.

Cons: "Free DiscWizard™ software enables capacities beyond 2TB on legacy PC BIOS and Windows XP-based systems"

No. It flat out doesn't work with Windows XP at all without Seagate's Disk Wizard. Without the software, you have zero access to this drive. It shows up in device manager but doesn't show up in Disk Management.

I expected to be able to use Disk Wizard to allocate 2TB of usable space in Windows XP, then to be able to uninstall the program and use the drive like any other and ignore the extra space. That isn't the case.

While the software does allow XP to use all 3TBs, and in a single partition, it does so with virtualization. The software shows the 2TB section to the OS, then allows the creation of a virtual drive that can use the extra space. If you convert the 2TB+746GB sections into dynamic discs, you can span the two into one volume for a single 2.7TB partition. WARNING: This does not play nice with hot-swapping though.... (See Other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: Cons
....because the VHD doesn't support it, meaning that while you can hot-swap the 2TB Partition, the extended capacity 746GB section will always require a reboot to access, so If you spanned the volumes together the dynamic disc will be broken till restart.

You can keep the volumes separate to avoid this issue, but that doesn't make the software any good. A VHD requiring a system restart to function again is just silly and inconvenient.

____________
Other Thoughts
While I was impressed with the speed of this drive, it ultimately proved to be entirely useless for me due to the cons. I'd have been happy with 150MB/s min R/W on just 2TB but it unfortunately requires their software to have any basic function at all.

I plan to return it to the store I purchased it at (BB) thankfully there is no shipping involved with their returns if you can walk to their store.

1 out of 5 eggsFour drives dead after two years

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Got four of them about two years ago, all four had died within two weeks of each other. I was literally running to local store every couple of days to get replacements to keep my mirrored data intact. All have been running in a small home NAS, used maybe once a week to store incremental backups of my home PC's.

Other Thoughts: Planned obsolescence at its best, funny thing is I still had a month of warranty left when they died so I was able to get refurbished ones from Seagate RMA. They carry only 90 day warranty though and it is quite safe to assume this how long they will last. I'll be using them until I rebuild the data storage using HGST drives. And then I'll give them to my mother-in-law.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Happy With Seagate Brand

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: The warranty is nice.

Cons: Of the three I bought, two have died after a year and a few months. They fail Seagate's drive test software and I now have two "Certified Repaired Drives" due to warranty replacement...

3 out of 5 eggsWorks

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -Cheap
-Hasn't died
-3TB

Cons: -Hangs more than any drive I've ever had. Including drives that are over 10 years old.

Other Thoughts: -I regret not buying the WD green.
-Not sure why it is slower (real world productivity-wise) than SATA 3Gb/s that I have that are like 7-8 years old (WD).
-I suggest sticking to WD drives. I've never had one fail but I just didn't want to be a fanboy so I thought I'd give seagate a try.
-Not worth the cheaper price compared to WD drives. Seagate drives have the lowest price for a reason it seems.

3 out of 5 eggsI have seen better

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap, decent speed and storage amount. Cheap to replace after failure.

Cons: Reliability is less than desirable. The drives have catastrophic failures to frequently.

Other Thoughts: Each of the four drives that I own have failed and warranted replacement. Two of the failures where within the warranty period and one was not.

I have several drives purchased from one of their competitors that have not failed and are twice as old as. I am currently in the process of replacing these drives with a more expensive but reliable drive from a different company.
