1 out of 5 eggsAvoid this drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: large capacity, speedy, works when it does work

Cons: Bad apple, quality a shadow of former self

Other Thoughts: Purchased this on Nov 23, 2012. Nearly a month ago, the drive half-died on me. By half-died, it went ka-put but power-cycle (power down, power on) brings it back to life. It can be detected on start up, but reading data off of certain random areas takes a while. Worse yet is that some data became unreadable. Fortunately I was able to barely move essential files to another working drive, despite that it took hours for that to get done.

This is one of the drive models that Backblaze uses in their storage systems. It had one of the worst failure rate out of the drives they've ran and used. Yet I don't put the kind of strain or load, the drive still couldn't live longer than it should have. I thought I could trust Seagate with the kind of reliability that they had. But I guess they've really gone downhill.

I don't think it's worth getting Seagate drives any more. It's disappointing when a company as big and as reputable as Seagate starts throwing out bad drives that couldn't last longer than their biggest competitor: Western Digital.

Conclusion: avoid this drive like the plague.

3 out of 5 eggsNot the Safest, but the Cheapest

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: These drives are cheap and they have good specs/performance. Can't argue with that.

Cons: These die really fast. If you have one for over two years, I would suggest replacing them asap. I had 2 fail on me in just over 2 years (just after the warranty expired). I had a third one which was external (same model HD though), that died after about that amount of time.

Other Thoughts: Get at least 2 of them and put them in some kind of RAID redundancy. They're cheap enough that you can do that. Like I said, I had 2 that ended up dying on me, but I still bought 3 more because I can RAID them and not worry too much about losing data.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid like the plague.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None. Waste your money if you want to. Only gave it 1 egg because I had to. It really should be a ZERO.

Cons: These drives will fail. Remember the IBM Deathstar dives from 20 years ago. These 3 tb drives are in the same class.
I am not anti seagate, just these particular drives.
Look up the comments on Backblaze's Blog about them.
I quote "Only 251 of the 4,190 Seagate 3TB hard drives deployed in 2012 are still in service as of March 31, 2015."

I wouldn't take one if they were free with free shipping.
My own personal experience has been that 4 out of 7 drives have failed. All of the failures were just after warranty.

Other Thoughts: Several years ago i bought several "as" series Seagate drives. Those drives had high failure rates.

2 out of 5 eggs*review update*

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 5 stars for the MyServicePlan extended warranty service! They have refunded my purchase in the form of a newegg gift card rather than the undesirable option of getting another one of these flawed models. And it only took 2 days to process!! Kudos to MyServicePlan!

Cons: see original review.

2 out of 5 eggsDied shortly after 2 year warranty period.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked while it lasted.

Bundled with a MyServicePlan extended warranty service, hopefully they come through and I don't get burned a second time.

Cons: Coincidence that it died shortly after manufacturer warranty?

BackBlaze reports a ridiculously high failure rate for this specific model.

Other Thoughts: I own quite a bit of high capacity drives across various manufacturers and like the title states, this is the only one that has stopped working out of blue (click of death?) just months after the manufacturer period expired (my other drives are past warranty and are still in working condition). I would like to think I keep all of my drives under hospital conditions (non-moving, dry environment, and an intake fan to keep cool) but that just wasn't enough. I gave Seagate the benefit of the doubt but they have really let me down in customer faith.

3 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for + Warranty Shenanigans

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap for the size of it. Held up ok for what it was.

Cons: Mechanical failure came on quite suddenly. RMA seemed to be fairly painless until I took a closer look at the warranty information, and realized that I would void the warranty unless I shipped it back encased in 2-inch thick styrofoam. Seems reasonable until you take into account that that far exceeds the drive's initial packaging. If the original packaging doesn't meet their requirements, it strikes me as a pretty sneaky way to get out of honouring some warranties. Glad I caught that before I sent it in.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Chris,

We apologize for the problem with your 3TB Barracuda. Our warranty packaging policy is designed to make sure that the drive is not damaged during shipping. If you are from the US or Canada, please contact our warranty department directly as we may have an option to get you the shipping materials first.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact our support staff and we will be happy to assist further:

1 out of 5 eggsHindsight is 20/20

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Drive was very affordable, operated excellently as part of my RAID array for about 2 years.

I gave this drive a 5 star rating after purchasing it and not having an issue for a while--I have to rescind that now.

Cons: Just over two years to the day of purchasing one of these drives it had a catastrophic failure, no warning. I'm paranoid so I run a RAID 6, during rebuilt ANOTHER one of these drives failed as well. I've poked around google and seen that this is a recurring problem with these drives. I have SIX more of them in my RAID array, and now I'm faced with the prospect of having to replace them all in the very near future with WD Black drives at nearly twice the cost.

Other Thoughts: I'm never buying Seagate again. Drives fail, I understand that--but the large volume of people who have had failures right after their warranty expiration is very distressing. I have had WD drives fail in the past, but usually after 5+ years of use. I expect if a drive can make it 18 months that it should last at least five years.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear John,

1 out of 5 eggsSlowly went bad

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It did last just over 2 years.

Cons: It slowly went bad. Reallocated sectors slowly increased right before the limited warranty expired and skyrocketed after. After the limited warranty, here are how the stats stand now (and recovering information made impossible due to 'i/o' errors.)
- Read error rate: ~97million
- Seek error rate: ~50 billion
- Uncorrectable Sector Count: 45608
- Reported uncorrectable Errors: 65535
- Reallocated Sectors: 33832
