3 out of 5 eggsCheap, works, but lame warranty

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap drive, works most of the time. Suitable for bulk storage -- but be sure to back everything up! 7200rpm is decent speed for a bulk storage drive.

Cons: These drives have a two year MTBF. I bought eight of them a little over two years ago. One failed a week before the warranty ran out. Seagate replaced it in a timely manner without incident. Three others failed within three months of the warranty ending. I expect the remaining four to fail in the very near future.

Other Thoughts: These went into a Dell R510 with a PERC 700 raid controller. You need to upgrade the raid controller to the latest firmware in order for the drives to be recognized. As these are unsupported drives by Dell, drive SMART data does not seem to be understood by the controller so unless the drive is offline, you won't get an error. Be sure to ZERO out your replacement drives as my replacement drive I got back from Seagate had raid metadata on it and would not rebuild properly until it was zeroed out.

4 out of 5 eggsOne week in and it seems to be working well

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast data transfer between my drives, quiet operation, large storage capacity.

Cons: As it's not my boot drive, it stops spinning to save energy when not in use. Mostly annoying for about 5 seconds when I first try to open anything stored here.

Other Thoughts: I haven't put the drive through its paces yet as I'm mainly using it as extra space for files I access periodically. So far I'm happy with this drive!

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible quality

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap per GB. Does not spontaneously combust or melt.

Cons: Hilariously bad reliability. Bought 4, and not two years later 3 of them have failed. About to totally lose a RAID5 to this garbage. Don't put anything important on these.

2 out of 5 eggsBought 3 - 2 failed

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fits in Mac Pro

Cons: Drive fails without any SMART warnings

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 of these at once to fit in a new 2012 Mac Pro. 2 of them failed without any SMART warnings requiring me to send the drives to Seagate for a flat-fee of $500 for data recovery. One of them was within warranty range so I was sent the same type of drive. The second I was sent a USB drive therefore I have to now purchase another SATA drive and copy over the data.

2 out of 5 eggslook elsewhere

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked for 2.5 years without issue

Cons: I put 3 of these drives in a Seagate Black Armor NAS box. Since August I have had to replace all of them.
1 spin up and sound like a head crash the other 2 spin up but are undetectable by the NAS or another system.
Thank got for RAID5 or I would be out a lot of data.

Other Thoughts: You might want to consider an extended warranty if you buy one of these drives...or just choose another manufacturer. I would but I am locked into these since all 3TB are not created equally.

2 out of 5 eggs3 drives died just outside of warantee

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works fairly well. Decent response times.

Cons: Have 3 3TB drives of these in a black armor NAS raid5 configuration. Since August I have had to replace all of them. I would change manufacturers but I can't be sure that the "actual" size would work without having to rebuild my raid from scratch.

Other Thoughts: Seems like the 2 year warranty is just right. as each drive died after about 2.5 years of use.

4 out of 5 eggsSeagate Barracude 7200.14 Review

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - Large Space
- Cheap Price

Cons: - Different Format
- Not for a beginner user

Other Thoughts: If you format it with the normal windows format, it will max out to 2 TB. You have to format into a new universal format to get the full 3 TB. I wont go into technobabble.
Basically if your just looking for a hard drive to plug and play, this isnt it. NOT RECOMMENDED for new users.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive Failure (Randomly Dismounts)

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought two drives, one has stopped being reliable after under a year. Other still chugging seems to be be chugging along.

Cons: Placed both drives into ZFS array. One started failing zpool scrubs and randomly disconnecting after a little under 2 years. No SMART tests failing. Tried changing the SATA controller, SATA cable, and ports it was plugged into, no dice. Was able to recover 100% of the data with some persistence remounting/restarting the drive. Second Seagate I've opened an RMA for today.

Other Thoughts: Keep backups of anything you store on these drives!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: At first I was skeptical at buying a drive that was at such a low price point compared to other drives. There were 1 and 2 TB drives that were the same cost and i thought this drive must have had a high failure rate or something that caused this drive to be cheaper than others. I decided to buy this drive anyway and give it a shot. It's a fantastic drive. It is fast and works like any other hard drive should. After seeing how good the first drive performed i purchased another as a backup drive. I would definitely recommend buying this drive if you are on a budget and want lots of space.

Cons: None so far

2 out of 5 eggsRelatively short life, poor support

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked for 22 months

Cons: Used this as an OS drive in my HTPC. Stopped working, no tool, cable, sata port, install in other machine or anything would get it to recognize by any bios.

Checked Seagate website and they denied warranty. I had to send them invoice from the Egg & picture of drive to get them to honor two year warranty. Submitted request for replacement and now I'm told they are delayed due to low stock....geez.

I purchased a new HGST 4GB drive to be able move on with my life and reinstall everything.

Other Thoughts: I will probably avoid Seagate, not because of the failure as much as the hassle of having to press just to get warranty service that so far isn't delivering.
