5 out of 5 eggsGood hard drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works, reliable

Cons: This drive likes to sleep. I will want to move a file on/off the drive and have to wait for it to spin up before it starts. Maybe there is a setting I can change to turn the hippy/political/green stuff off so that it is always running and responsive but haven't bothered looking yet (it is a secondary drive, no OS)

Other Thoughts: Some of my other technical friends like WD better but I personally like Seagate and have not had any issues in my last 3 builds. I always put them in RAID 1 so that I don't lose data in the event one does go out.

5 out of 5 eggsRaid 1 on synology DS212j

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I've been running them on my Synology DS212j NAS for 2 months now and they perform very well. more specifically I have not had any issues.

Cons: none I can think of

Other Thoughts: These drives replaced an older single disk Seagate drive i was running on my NAS, and it is still running. Seagate is a disk company I can trust.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate Barracuda 2TB works well.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity. Extra saving with promo code. Packaged well. 2-year warranty (whereas some recent Seagate drives -- even the "retail" ones on store shelves -- have had only a 1-year warranty).

Cons: None so far. Only a 2-year warranty; I remember when Seagate drives had a 5-year warranty.

Other Thoughts: This my fifth ST2000DM001. The first was received direct from Seagate as a warranty replacement for an ST32000641AS that failed. Three more I bought as "retail kit" drives (packaged as STBD2000101, but the drive inside was the ST2000DM001). This one I bought as a replacement for a second ST32000641AS that sometimes "acts up" but always passes the SeaTools diagnostics.

I have read complaints of some "bare" drives (from various manufacturers and vendors) suffering damage in transit due to improper packaging, but this one came in a close-fitting "air-cushion" pouch in a box just the right size.

5 out of 5 eggsSatisfied

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 1 - It is really easy to install in my case because I have the NZXT Phantom Full Tower and it has tool less drive bay slots.

2 - The drivers were quick to install.

3 - Seems to work great without any problems.

Cons: 1 - I guess this could be a con for some, not so much for me, but it was a bit heavier than my other 1 TB hard drive.

2 - This was probably my fault for not reading all that it comes with, but I assumed it'd come with the Sata cord and I was wrong and now I have to buy a new one.

3 - None I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I got this one on sale for 79.99 for 10 dollars off the usual price because of the promo codes. I'll wait a little longer before I recommend this to anyone

5 out of 5 eggsNo Issues

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I purchased four of the 2 TB and one 1 TB versions of these drives to upgrade a file server. None were DOAs. Faster than the previous drive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I'm planning on having the four 2 TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration with the 1 TB drive as the OS drive (Windows Server 2008 R2). I'll update in a month or two after they log more time in.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works great. Nearly plug and play. All I had to do was partition the HDD in disk management. Not exactly the fastest, but it does what I want it to do. That is why my OS is on a SSD.

Cons: None, works as expected.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great, hasn't failed yet.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Runs great on an external enclosure, doesn't make any noise, wake time seems fast enough, hasn't failed on me.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: For what it is, it's a good a drive as any. I got this when it was on said and I'm pretty happy with it.

I use this as part of a Plex server streaming out to the network. My OS trys to put the external drives to sleep a lot, but this thing is actually pretty quick to wake up when someone tries stream something from it randomly.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive. But why 3 stars?

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: If you get the good version of this drive...

Fast!
Quiet
Dependable

Cons: If you get the bad version...

Slower (still fairly fast).
Makes weird noises
Might die unexpectedly.

Other Thoughts: You probably noticed the reviews of this seem rather polarized. Well that's because there are two versions of this drive. If you get the right one, it's fast, quiet, and reliable. If you get the other, it's slower, makes noises, and will die on you. I ordered 2 and got one of each. The telltale sign of the bad drive is the shallow curved indention in the upper right (the picture of the drive on NE in fact IS the bad one). The good one has a much deeper groove. That's because it has 2 1tb platters instead of 3 666gb ones. They can't promise you which you'll get. I tried. I ended up getting a second one somewhere else where I could guarantee what it was.

4 out of 5 eggsNot dead yet

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cost. Storage...

Cons: Disconnects from host - would probably lock up the system if it were a boot drive.

Other Thoughts: I am using this drive to store SnapRaid parity data - so it's hardly ever read / written to.
Several times it has disappeared / disconnected from my Ubuntu Server.
Rebooting has always brought it back - and smartctl reports PASS - so AFAIK this could be a powersaving 'feature' that my kernel (3.2) doesn't handle... But I don't know that.

I've heard about similar problems have threads on Seagate's forums but I've had trouble with google's links to Seagate's forums.

Seagate's Firmware update checker is unintuitive (at best), but it appears that there is a firmware update for my drive. There are multiple 'versions' of any Seagate model number (even multiple head / platter configurations) so a serial number is required to determine what firmware is available.

Adaptec references this firmware upgrade in "Known issues with Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 Desktop Drives" which appears to describe my issue.

Overall it appears the drive is mechanically sound - but the firmware was / is buggy.
