5 out of 5 eggsRunning fine after ~3 years of every day use.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -no problems after three years of 8+ hour gaming sessions nearly every day in a warm weather area.

Cons: -500 GB is a small amount of storage.

Other Thoughts: I keep my reviews very simple. It's been nearly three years since I purchased it (January 2012 was the purchase date, the date of this review is October 2014).

In that time, I've used my computer every single day for often more than 8 hour days with little to no interruptions. I'm a hardcore gamer so I push my rig to the max every day during long game sessions. I also live in Florida on the second story, so my room heats up very quickly. My PC is properly cooled, but still gets warmer inside my PC than it would if I lived in a cooler climate area.

Despite this heavy abuse, the hard drive is still working fine. As such, I've given it 5 eggs. If something works under the conditions I put it in for nearly three years, then I have no problems with it. I won't deduct eggs for the limited storage space because you know what you're paying for when you buy it.

4 out of 5 eggsNo problems

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Work great so far without any problems what so ever! Good price too

Cons: Not exactly a high end drive at only 7200rpm, but I don't need 15k RPM drives either

Other Thoughts: Took a star off since it wasn't "the best in the world" type of drive, not due to any satisfaction problems.

1 out of 5 eggsMany have died, none have lived.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: The only pro would be to avoid Seagate brand.

I would recommend Western Digital. I have HDDs from WD 15 years old that still work.

Cons: I have purchased 4 Seagate Barracuda HDDs all have died in less than 2 years of normal use.

The drives i purchased range in variety from green 2TB to 1.5TB 7200 RPM, and 500 GB 7200RPM.

Simply cannot afford to waste any more time with lost data and replacement time involved with the failure of this brand of drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for the price

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I purchased this drive to replace one that was failing in my 21.5" iMac. It was a perfect fit, and honestly the hardest part of the install was disassembling the iMac to put it in. Reinstalling the OS now and couldn't be happier.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, great price

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great value for the money. I purchased this drive as a replacement for the drive that was failing in my 21.5" iMac. The hardest part about swapping it out had nothing to do with the drive itself, and everything to do with disassembling the iMac. Perfect fit and quick install of the OS.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid HDD

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Have had this HDD for about 2 years now considering my WD died after 4 years of use, thought I'd try out seagate and have been loving it. No hiccups, error codes, or other erratic behavior indicating failure. Used to be a system drive until I bought an SSD, so now it's just for media storage. It's quite fast for an HDD and haven't had any corrupted data so far.

Cons: Can't really think of one.

Other Thoughts: Good budget drive if you just need the extra space. If you're going to need a system drive just spend the extra money for an SSD. you'll thank me later.

2 out of 5 eggsDrive Failed 3 months after warranty expired

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Inexpensive drive
No special OS tweaks necessary as with an SSD

Cons: Slower than an SSD by an order of magnitude.
Lives up to its Barracuda legacy. NOT built for longevity.
Hard Drive lasted just over two years, in a light use environment. (Internet/email box)

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Good HDD

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good Capacity for the price. Probably could've spent about $20 more and gotten 1 TB but whatever. I've heard that Seagate Drives are unreliable, but this one worked just fine for me. i wasn't looking for ALOT of room so this works just fine.

4 out of 5 eggsAverage Performing Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Decent warranty for the price
I bought the 1 TB model as well as the 500 GB and here are their benchmark results:

Crystal Disk Mark – 500 GB
• Sequential: Read = 140.3 MB/s, Write = 136.0 MB/s
• 512k: Read = 52.42 MB/s, Write = 78.90 MB/s
• 4k: Read = 0.670 MB/s, Write = 1.105 MB/s
• 4k QD32: Read = 1.824 MB/s, Write = 0.872 MB/s

Crystal Disk Mark – 1 Tb
• Sequential: Read = 172.3 MB/s, Write = 164.0 MB/s
• 512k: Read = 69.60 MB/s, Write = 98.11 MB/s
• 4k: Read = 1.028 MB/s, Write = 1.716 MB/s
• 4k QD32: Read = 2.540 MB/s, Write = 1.754 MB/s

HD Tune – 500 GB
• Minimum: 68.4 MB/s
• Maximum: 137.3 MB/s
• Average: 108.9 MB/s
• Access Time: 15.5 ms
• Burst Rate: 145.9 MB/s

HD Tune – 1 Tb
• Minimum: 52.2 MB/s
• Maximum: 191.2 MB/s
• Average: 159.7 MB/s
• Access Time: 15.7 ms
• Burst Rate: 164.4 MB/s

Temperature
• 500 GB: 87.8 °F
• 1 Tb: 91.4 °F

I also tested the new drive on a SATA II connection and as I figured the results were within a margin of error as some values were higher and some were lower than when on the SATA III connection. So if you don’t have a SATA III capable motherboard, don’t worry about it.

Cons: The performance is average especially compared to the 1 TB models.

Other Thoughts: Performance compared to a 1 TB model is quite noticeable and given how close the pricing is, just buy a 1 TB even if you don’t need the space, the performance difference is worth the few extra dollars.

Not related to the drive but Newegg’s new hard drive packaging is fantastic as the drive is held together so tightly I could barely get it out of the box.

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.
