3 out of 5 eggsIt's OK

Pros: It was really cheap when I bought it. $53. So, decent size for what I paid and especially with the current prices on hard drives.

Cons: It's not really very fast. I'm not impressed with it's speed. Kind of noisey, but not really that bad.

Other Thoughts: I've read other reviews, people say it's fast and some people say it's loud. It's really not that fast and it's not too loud. For the price you can't go wrong right now. Even though it's not the greatest drive, I wish I would have bought a couple more. Throw in an SSD for Intel Speed Cache and it would be an excellent combo.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great.

Cons: Sometimes gets a bit loud, but nothing severe.

Other Thoughts: I have no place to put it in my case, so its just sitting at the bottom of my case, in a vertical position. Hope that doesnt have any long-term affects.

4 out of 5 eggsHitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B

Pros: This low cost drive is about what you would expect, especially from Hitachi. It performs decently and at the price you can't really ask for more.

Cons: A little on the noisy side.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed!

Pros: Reasonably priced considering the current state of hard drive prices. Casing was in good condition.

Cons: The drive failed after only one month of use. This Drive does not come with any manufacturer warranty and they clearly do not perform proper testing before they ship them out. I might expect this buying used from an individual but "refurbished" should indicate that the drive is viable. These drives are not. Also, even for the extremely short period for which the drive actually worked, it was very slow.

Other Thoughts: I was operating this drive under almost ideal conditions. It was in a new computer, properly mounted with cooling fans blowing directly on it (the internal temp was usually around 85F). I was also using the drive primarily for mass storage so it was not accessed overly much.

1 out of 5 eggsBunch of junk

Pros: It works when it works.

Cons: It does not come with a bottle of aspirin...or a lobotomy kit.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from this refurbished junk.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Benchmarks show good read / write throughput exceeding 120 MB/Sec in outer zones. The drive runs relatively cool in my BlacX Dual docking station. I bought two drives, both of which came up without trouble and are showing top SMART indications after testing. I've experienced good reliability with several Hitachi drives I've purchased over the years.

Cons: While the benchmarks show a faster throughput than my venerable Caviar blue 320GB boot drive, after cloning my boot drive and booting up on the Hitachi, Windows 7 actually took longer to boot. And this was despite the Hitachi having twice the cache and more of the data stored in the faster outer zones.

But it was an easy experiment to do, and I really don't need the extra space on a drive dedicated solely for OS and application software for simple backup purposes. Hard drive performance is a somewhat mysterious thing that doesn't always correspond to static benchmark testing.

Other Thoughts: Both of these drives will serve my purposes well. It's depressing, though, to realize that, for the price of one of these drives today, I could (and did) buy a brand new 2TB Hitachi a few months ago.
