The Deskstar 5K3000 hard drive provides an enormous capacity and features innovative CoolSpin technology to deliver a greater level of power efficiency and quiet operation for energy-conscious, environmentally-friendly computers. Key to CoolSpin technology is an optimization of motor speed to provide an ideal balance of performance, power utilization and acoustics. The CoolSpin technology, along with other Hitachi power management techniques, gives the Deskstar 5K3000 its 29% power savings over the Deskstar 7K3000. The latest SATA III interface delivers noticeable data transfer boost of up to 2x the speed of SATA Revision II, reaching the speed of 6Gbps.

  • newegg Power efficient for cooler operation and longer life CoolSpin and HiVERT technologies combine to create this new class of hard drive that delivers excellent power utilization and thermal emissions. HiVERT technology helps efficiently manage power consumption. These innovations, along with eighth-generation Advanced Power Management, make the Deskstar 5K3000 the ideal choice for energy-efficient PCs that run cooler, require less power and last longer.
  • newegg SATA III Interface The industry leading SATA Revision 3.0 compliant SATA ports provides up to 6Gb/s data transfer rates to reduce system bottleneck and improve performance and efficiency.
  • newegg Innovation for a more sustainable environment The Deskstar 5K3000 demonstrates Hitachi ecological leadership with its halogen-free design and power-efficient operation. Both of these features helped qualify the drive for the Hitachi EcoTrac classification, which identifies products that minimize environmental impact in the areas of product design, manufacturing, operation and disposal.

5 out of 5 eggsStill working

Pros: Bought this drive as the storage drive for my wife's computer. It's on most of the time and gets only light use, but has not shown any trouble signs so far.

Cons: Price really hasn't dropped in the 1 year since I bought it

1 out of 5 eggsUsed to be a great drive.

Pros: Pros? Two- A large amount of storage, and a good price.

Cons: One- Lack of reliability. After about a year, I got the dreaded click of doom. The drive won't post or do anything but click.
I had planned to add a second drive and an SSD down the road, but after this happened I went with a Barracuda instead.
If I get a replacement (I'd much rather have my original repaired, honestly), it's going straight into an external enclosure and will only be used sparingly. Maybe that will help extend the life past a single year.

Other Thoughts: I've gone through many computers (and HDDs) in the past twenty years, but this is the first drive failure I've had since 1998.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Good

Pros: Used it as a secondary drive in my PC. Installed fine, ran quiet and cool. Low power draw.

Cons: After about 2 years of use, I noticed that some files were getting corrupted and Windows Backups were not completing successfully. There were no SMART errors during startup. Upon running the Drive tool from HGST, I started getting many errors. Ran chkdsk over 24 hours and a few of the files were fixed. Thankfully, the drive was under 3 year warranty and I just got a replacement. Return shipping was very S-L-O-W - took over 10 days for the drive to reach me in continental US.

Other Thoughts: The primary (boot) drive on the same PC is a 10-years old 7200 RPM drive that is still running fine. I also have a 7-year old Hitachi 250 GB PATA drive that is working fine. I thought the slower RPM of this Hitachi drive and lower running temp would make it last longer - NOT.

Newegg shows this drive as being Out of Stock so I am not sure if Hitachi has stopped selling it. The replacement drive has a Jan-2013 on the label so hopefully I got a new drive. I checked the warranty using the Serial No. of the new drive and it expires in 12 months. It appears that Hitachi is no longer confident of a 3-Year warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks well, until it dies.

Pros: Large capacity and relatively cheap, including a mail-in-rebate.
Quiet operation.
Works well in RAID 01 setup.

Cons: One of the two I bought died right around a year of use. I have it in a RAID 01 configuration in an HTPC. This PC isn't even on all the time; it spends most of it's time in Sleep mode.

Other Thoughts: A 50% success rate is unacceptable, no matter how good the price is. If I did not purchase two and mirror them, I would have lost everything. The most critical piece of a computer is the hard drive; if you can't rely on that, what can you?
I have other hard drives that have been working well over 7 years.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 3 months

Pros: It was large capacity and cheap

Cons: It was cheap. After about 3 months files began to corrupt, then eventually all data lost and clicking was all I got.

Other Thoughts: Finally getting around to RMA. I may just end up with another lemon, but for a few dollars for shipping maybe some miracle will occur and the drive will work for a few years... Yes, I buy lottery tickets now and then.
