1 out of 5 eggsFails in 2 years

Pros: Inexpensive
Cool (ish)

Cons: Today marks 1 day after the 2 year warranty expires and it's just about ready to die. This is my first hard drive to not make it past 5 years of home use. I even have some decade old hard drives.

Other Thoughts: Alright if you don't put anything on it of value whatsoever, of if you buy two and use one to back up the other.

Otherwise avoid. 2 years is a terrible life span for a desktop pc hard drive.

4 out of 5 eggsDOA, but Replaced

Pros: Great Customer Support from Western Digital

Cons: Don't know yet.

Other Thoughts: I left a very negative review here when I discovered I'd spent a year trying to get a dead drive to work. Once i discovered it was dead, WDs customer support kicked in and within days I had a replacement drive that works great.

1 out of 5 eggsbad, bad drive

Pros: price point

Cons: It doesn't actually keep your data. It pretendends to hold it for a short, random period of time, and then throws it all away.

Horrible quality.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive to use as an off-line backup. I stored my data on it, then stored it in an ESD bag, in a fire safe. I would remove it about every 3 months, and update the data stored on it.

After just over a year of ownership - with a total on time as reported by the drive - of 5 days - the drive completely failed.

Waiting for the RMA now, so they can ship me a replacment drive, which will likely have already failed once, before they 'repaired' it, and sent it to me. I don't expect the replacement to last long either...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer, it is unfortunate to find out your drive failed in such a short time frame. We are here to support our products regardless of the circumstances and will gladly replace your drive for you directly.

3 out of 5 eggsI'll still buy WD

Pros: Worked well, until.....

Cons: Failed after ~1.5 years. I used to buy a mix of WD and Seagate, but I've come to the conclusion that Seagate has more reliability issues than WD. This drive died a slow death. If I had a bit more time in the 2 weeks leading up to the crash I might have been able to save a lot of time recovering data.

Other Thoughts: I'm about to do a warranty RMA. WD warranties are good.

I was using it primarily as a backup drive but I did have a bit of data that I hadn't backed up in a while due to building/transferring files from a new build. I had roughly 300GB that I wanted to recover. I was able to recover it all but copying took around 5 days (but it did copy!)

I'll still buy WD, but this particular drive didn't last. I have a pair of 200GB WD's that have been going strong for over 7 years. Bigger drives, bigger problems. Better do a good job of keeping backups.

3 out of 5 eggsLived life of warranty, barely

Pros: Fine while it lasted

Cons: Installed 2011-09-30, died November 2013, just barely making the warranty period

Other Thoughts: Wish NewEgg would make warrantee period a searchable facet: I'd only search for drives with 5 year warranties.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed with reliability

Pros: I had a pair of these installed in a Synology DS211j NAS box running RAID 1. The box would run 6 hours per day (automatic power schedule). The data was backups of 4 computers & my music library on a Synology DS110j NAS box. Drives were not used much. WD replaced the bad drive under warranty.

Cons: One drive in the mirror set started to fail - block errors. I ordered a pair of 4TB drives and replaced both 2TB drives and grew the array at the same time. After reading similar reviews, I don't think I want to use these drives again

Other Thoughts: The Synology software allowed me to replace the bad 2TB drive with a 4TB drive. When the rebuild was done, I replaced the good 2TB drive with the other new 4TB drive. When that rebuild was complete, the array was expanded to use the entire 4TB space. Sweet!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello DCSmith, we are sorry to find out of the issues you experienced with the WD Green on your NAS box. Please note that WD Black, WD Green, and WD Blue hard drives are not recommended for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications.
For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider the WD Enterprise or WD Red Hard Drives that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing.Visit the following links for more information.
If you require any further feedback or assistance with your drive, please contact our support team directly and reference this Newegg review.

5 out of 5 eggsBad News, Good News

Pros: I've had six of these for about two years. They are solid and efficient, as promised.I use them in a Sans Digital RAID box without a hitch. Till someone knocked the box over. OUCH! I tried to replace with same but no dice. They are discontinued... Look at the "Red" series. Everything you get here and lots more for not much more money. Check out the 4 TB version.

Cons: They cannot survive a 2 foot drop while running. There... happy?

Other Thoughts: If these appeal to you, consider going "red". Everything you see here but faster and more robust. (I always wanted to use that word)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks just fine

Pros: I've have two of these drives in a RAID with another, older WD Green drive (WD20EARS). They have been working fine, running 24/7.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great selection, product as ordered, arrived timely,

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: Packing was adequate for carrier, & product arrived apparently OK. However, packing might not have been adequate to survive my local USPS, which can---& routinely does!---destroy anything not "defensively" packaged. I suggest more paranoid packing! :-)
