Pros: Nice case.

Cons: This is the second time I have purchased a Western Digital drive and the second time it has failed on me immediately after the warranty has expired - thus requiring extremely expensive data recovery. Not because of user error, but just because the product corroded and failed.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy Western Digital if you're looking for longevity. It doesn't have it.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty decent

Pros: Very good for it's price. Always love Western Digital drives. They hardly let me down.
Warranty has very good coverage. Even physically damaged by falls, they will replace it for you. And provide a shipping label most of the time.

Cons: Obviously because it's an HDD, breaks easily upon physical impact.

Other Thoughts: Not much else to say about this drive. It's run about 50MB/s read speeds for me, and it runs nicely. Not good for running programs directly off of it though. Best for storing things.

2 out of 5 eggsIt's Ok..nothing stellar

Pros: The drive was really cheep when purchased. The power brick is significantly smaller than previous western digital caviar external drives. And the drive is fairly quiet. Previous drives, gave off an awful screech.

Cons: It is really slow. Painfully slow. File transfers on the drive take an incredible amount of time. However, the power savings profile is too aggressive and the drive constantly wants to park and go to sleep. The end result is every time the computer needs scan its drives, the computer will stall waiting for this thing to spool up. It causes the boot process to take forever, and programs to go unresponsive at times. Backups with Windows 7 backup take days. I typically set a calendar reminder to backup, manually plug the drive in and turn it on, perform my backup and then unplug and turn off. Would not recommend, and looking for alternative.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: This is a great backup drive. And it works just fine. It's easy to use. I had a drive that stopped working. It was still within the 1 year warranty, and Western digital replaced it without any issues. They are pretty fast too. It only took a week.

Cons: Because it is a regular hard drive with spinning platters, if you knock it over while the drive is on, I guarantee you that you will lose all of your data.

Other Thoughts: I think the design of the drive is gorgeous. Except that if you use this drive, keep it laying flat. If you stand it up like a book, make sure to brace it and don't bump it. Also, I'm impressed with Western Digitals return policy and turn around time to replace it's bad products.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Little Drive

Pros: This drive is in constant use and has worked flawlessly. I run it with three different partions.
1. NTFS for the PC
2. fat32 for Videos on the PS3
3 WBFS for the wii

Cons: Needs firmware update to remove the Virtual Drive (software).

Other Thoughts: I have used the WD backup software before and had no issues with it. No system slowdown or anything.

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid this one

Pros: Cheap, looks decent, got a power button, thinner than old version

Cons: SMARTWARE IS HORRIBLE. You cannot remove it. Apparently there is a second physical device in the container. I can't get truecrypt to work on this drive.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this drive if you want to a create a truecrypt partition.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat drive - horrible software

Pros: Bought this drive to perform local back-up restore on my media pc mirrored drive (being paranoid, I use PC Mozy for a non-local back-up). Large capactiy (1TB) means I can keep multiple copies of my pictures / movies / music. Fairly inexpensive and very easy to operate.

Cons: The software is TERRIBLE!! I run a quad core with 4 Gb of RAM with Vista Home Premium O/S, and the WD Smartware typically slows my PC to a crawl. I reported to WD tech support the issue and their solution was to reinstall the S/W from their website. Wiped my pc clean of their software, did a clean install - S/W is still a resource pig. Looked online - several posts complaining of the same performance issue. Other issue is if you remove the S/W, it attempts to reinstall every time you boot the drive. I have resorted to disabling the S/W after my PC boots up. That has resolved the problem but means I have to reinitiate it to perform back-ups.

Other Thoughts: Old drive was a 320 320Gb Seagate without the software that I would perform manual back-ups with. I bought the WD because I wanted to have a more automated back-up process. Given a re-do, I would have just bought a large Seagate drive and skipped the WD.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy fix for Virtual CD annoyance

Pros: The cost per megabyte is extremely low, making this one of the most affordable terrabyte drives available. I bought 3 of these drives to backup my SBS2003 server and rotate them offsite and they are working great.

Cons: I did not install any of the software from the drive and I must admit the WD firmware/software is annoying but is easily fixed. Just go to Device Manager, DVD CD/ROM drives, right-click on WD Virtual CD 1110 USB Device, and select Disable!

4 out of 5 eggsGood HD, Slightly annoying irremovable software

Pros: I got this in a great deal for $90 a few months ago and I love it so far.

My computer got infected with a virus or something that I couldn't be bothered with so I downloaded my computers drivers online and swapped the hard drive with one I had laying around. I used this external to copy over the files and I had no problem.

I now use it daily for HD movies, backing up music and backing up big programs like World of Warcraft.

-Space
-Quiet
-Easy to use
-Looks cool
-Doesn't get very hot
-Fits great side-by-side with another of the same model

Cons: The only downside I can see with this is the fact that it prompts you to install software every time it is plugged into the computer or the computer is turned on or restarted.

This is not a flaw, just an annoyance as there is no option to stop it. If you choose to not install it you are fine until the next time you either turn the computer on or plug the HD back in.

Alot of the people here are over criticizing the drive due to the software, and if you can deal with a quick "download or no?" prompt maybe daily or a few times daily (laptop users) there is nothing wrong with the drive.

-Software

Other Thoughts: I wish I could make the lights on it stop flashing, I have it no more than one foot to the left of my monitor but it isn't quite bright enough for me to stick tape over it yet or get annoyed.

-1 egg for the irremovable software, 4 still remain due to the quality.
