Pros: I purchased this for my first build in over 10 years back in 2012. After 2 years, it is still able to handle anything I throw at it. Coupled with the Sabertooth mobo, it overclocks with no difficulty, and temperatures are easily kept under control with the Corsair H100.

Cons: After 2 years, nothing to report.

Pros: When used with programs that are capable of accessing and making use of all 6 cores, along with appropriately powerful cooling, this chip will justify the price tag.

Cons: Prohibitively expensive, with returns only being visible on the most incredibly demanding computer tasks. If you're able to make full use of this chip, liquid cooling should be seriously considered. This thing runs HOT.

Other Thoughts: If you're using your pc for things like autocad or rendering for graphics design or video game creation, this chip is absolutely worth the extra cost. For pretty much everything else, its unlikely you'll be able to make full use of its power. Mundane tasks don't even stress a single core, and unfortunately, the majority of pc games right now don't have optimization to allow them to even access the 5th and 6th cores.

Pros: 3930k: 6 physical cores. Hyperthreading. 2mb L3 cache per core.

X79 chipset: Quad Channel RAM support. 40 PCI-E 3.0 lanes.

This is a beast. It's great at everything but really shines when all cores can see 100% load. Video/Audio editing and format conversion is where this trounces quad-core processors.

The processor and chipset is also suited for high-end gaming, but I cover that in the 'cons' and 'other thoughts'.

Cons: 130w TDP on an IHS the same size as <100w TDP quad core processors. This thing puts out heat. If overclocking past 4.2GHz, a closed-loop liquid cooler or custom loop is almost mandatory. Throw an extra 50 bucks into the 3930k build, because that's how much more you are apt to spend on cooling compared to an Ivy Bridge quad core with an air cooler. Considering a comparable Ivy Bridge quad core has almost the same footprint and almost 40% less heat to dissipate, it's a pretty accurate assessment.

It doesn't stop at the cooler - an LGA2011 costs incrementally more than a comparable LGA 1150-1156 build. Higher wattage power supply, 4 DIMMs of RAM for Quad Channel, higher cost for the motherboard, etc etc.

It's gonna cost more, and a lot of people would argue that it isn't necessarily a con (as it's just the nature of the beast, LGA2011 being the top-of-the-line), and I'd agree on every point.

However, for anyone with money looking to build the fastest and most awe-inspiring rig may want to think about this for a minute: if the computer isn't going to be seeing heavy CPU load numbers, it's a waste. It's wasted money, and it's wasted overclocking overhead in the form of heat.

A 4770k build has 4 cores with the same L3 cache per core, same hyperthreading, same IHS size, and an added benefit of less generated heat. The chipset can support Tri-SLI at PCI-E 3.0 without bottlenecking, and with an added benefit of being cheaper.

If you're looking to build a 4k beast of a machine, LGA2011 might just lead you astray, because that's money spent that could be thrown towards another 780 Ti/290x, and it's a monumental task trying to get to 4.8GHz on a 3930k/4930k while trying to keep core temps under 75 with a reasonable amount of fan noise.

Other Thoughts: My other thoughts kind of spilled into the cons, but if you go this route, you won't be disappointed. Trying to keep cost and heat in check might be a chore, but the 3930k/4930k put down the kind of numbers that will keep it useful for years.

I built my rig back in March 2012, and I'm getting the itch to build a newer system, but when I look around, the top-of-the-line is still on the same level as the 3930k.

That's why it gets 5 stars. Sure, it's expensive and it's more difficult to overclock than a quad core (anyone remember the Core 2 Duos being cheaper and easier to overclock than the Q6600? This is it all over again!), but at the end of the day, like the Q6600, building a system around this chip is building a system that will last at least a couple cycles of new CPUs.

In the end, it's overkill in a lot of situations but the price isn't 'not worth it' territory... It's just that other CPUs might be a better fit for a specific build.

One thing is for sure: this CPU and chipset will be crunching numbers and playing games for years.

Pros: Some may say, that this CPU is needlessly overpowered for most users needs.
Some say that Overclocking it is a waste of time and effort.
Some say that compared to its Ivy Bridge or lesser cored, Haswell Cousins, it is a power hog.

All I know is, it is an "E".

And "E" must stand for Extreme because even though it is not the "X" Extreme Edition chip, it has ample bang for the buck and overclocks exactly the same way if just a hair less then an "X" version of the SB-E or IB-E chips.

While it is no longer the undisputed king of the "K" Series now that IB-E is out, it is no less potent and while PCI-E 3.0 support isn't Official with the SB-E chips, it has worked flawlessly on a ASUS P9X79 Deluxe board with SLI GTX 780's.

Also while the newer IB-E chips, like their non "E" counterparts, use a bit less power, you can still make this chip sip when idle if you are careful and patient with overclocking based on Load instead of a raw 24/7 overclock. To have this CPU turbo up to 4.6Ghz but idle at only 1200Mhz is a pleasant and cool achievement, literally. The CPU doesn't need to be a space heater when it isn't in fact being used so make sure you work on getting a stable overclock with variable voltage and all the C states enabled for maximum efficiency.

Cons: At full load, this chip does suck power and being so big, it does create heat, however neither are unmanageable if you plan ahead with a good cooler, a good PSU, and adjust your overclock accordingly.

Other Thoughts: Don't just throw it up towards the 4.5-5Ghz realm and leave it there, these cpu's have such advanced turbo abilities that there is no need for it to idle at max speed all day unless you are just shooting for benchmarks. Even then, benchmark numbers vary very little with proper turbo configuration.

Pros: Water cooled this sucker and pumped out 4.8 ghz like it was a joke and with my asus rog mobo it was super easy, and love that they didn't waste the resources including a heat sink that everyone would just throw away

Pros: -Very Fast
-6 Cores
-Doesn't get as hot as my old Intel Extreme (Got a better cooler on this one so that is probably why)
-TONS of ram supported (64GB!!!)
-Lots of bandwidth for running SLI setups.

Cons: -No cooler included (but most people are using water cooling these days anyways)

Other Thoughts: Upgraded my system from my 4 core Intel Extreme Core and am very please with the performance boost. I don't game that much these days but everything is running smooth with no issue. I decided to go with the extra cores and an X79 MOBO because I am currently running a 2 card SLI system and may jump onto the 3 way SLI sometime in the future. I will be overclocking it in the near future when my CPU water cooler comes in. Currently using the Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 CPU cooler and its is ridiculously too big and covers too much on my mobo. Plus the price isn't too insane and is in reach for those who can spend a little bit of money but don't want to go broke.
