Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom II streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies with 3.1GHz dual cores, each of which has L1 and L2 caches. An additional 6MB of L3 cache is available to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Up to 17.1GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR2 delivers an amazing 37GB/s of processor-to-system bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Dual-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Dual-Core technology, two complete processor cores on a single die run at the same frequency to deliver exceptional multi-tasking power, allowing users to surge through the most demanding processing loads, including advanced multitasking, critical business productivity, complicated visual design and modeling, serious gaming, and visually stunning digital media and entertainment.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2 and DDR3 DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Phenom II X2 Dual-Core processor is integrated with DDR2 and DDR3 DRAM memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
  • newegg HyperTransport 3.0 Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT 3.0 technology the AMD Phenom II X2 Dual-Core processor enjoys 4000MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology is an enhanced solution available on AMD Phenom II X2 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
  • newegg AMD Virtualization Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
  • newegg AMD CoolCore Technology AMD CoolCore Technology reduces processor energy consumption by turning off unused parts of the processor. Power can be switched on or off within a single clock cycle so that energy is saved without compromising performance.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazed

Pros: This processor has to be the best dual core I have ever used. Amazing power that hasn't let me down yet.

Cons: The fan and heatsink that come with it are a little weak so you may want to buy a better one just in case.

Other Thoughts: Haven't looked at overclocking this one yet because I see no need. It's already fast enough.

3 out of 5 eggsEffective, but can't compete with i3

Pros: -Can unlock 2 additional cores

-Plays modern games well enough without CPU bottleneck

Cons: Even with 4 cores unlocked and overclocked to 3.4 GHz, this CPU still only gets a 7.1 in Windows Experience Index.

I recently built a new system based off Intel LGA 1156 chipset with a 140$ Core i3 540--

For 10$ more, you can get a CPU that is much more stable, easier to overclock, and preforms better on 2 cores than the AMD can on 4.

I got my i3 to 4.2 GHz on STOCK COOLING, with very minor voltage increases, and 100% load temps under 70*, usually hovered around 68*/69* after 20 minutes running large FFT tests in Prime95

Other Thoughts: This is a good CPU, that is not why I'm only giving 3 eggs.

I am giving 3 eggs because price/performance comparison between it and Intel Core i3, Core i3 dominates Phenom II

5 out of 5 eggs$95 Superstar

Pros: I got this 3.6mhz quad-core for $95. Stock heatsink is perfectly fine despite cooling 4 cores that are overclocked to 3.6 mhz.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: Windows 7 CPU experience is a 7.4. I could probably overclock a little higher, but my Ocz memory is so so.

Lucky Lucky meeeee!

I got to unlock all four cores as well on my MSI mobo which is epic as well. runs like a champ.

Cons: None. :]

Other Thoughts: A WAY SICK COOLING FAN WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL!! But really it's no big deal =P

5 out of 5 eggs135.99??

Pros: Unlocked @ 3.8Ghz daily use, awesome for gaming/benchmarking, basically an x4 955 for a hundred bucks.. best bang for buck CPU on the planet (if you unlock).

Cons: Price? I paid 99.99$ when it came out.. ouch...

The x2 555 is superior to this chip and costs 32.00$ less
