4 out of 5 eggsRosewill External Enclosure

Pros: Firewire 800, Sata, & USB

Cons: No fan

Other Thoughts: I own two of these.
As far as I am concerned, this is the best external enclosure.

4 out of 5 eggsOxford chipset external case

Pros: Actually has an Oxford Semiconductors chipset - this is important if you are trying to record video with a protools le setup on a laptop, since only external FW drives with Oxford 91x/92x chipsets are approved for use with Protools LE software. I've done 16 tracks of simultaneous recording on top of 16 tracks of playback, and 24 tracks of playback of 24 bit 48khz audio without problems on a fresh drive.

Cons: Assembly is utterly moronic and you're likely to cut yourself in the process. There are more screws than you'd use in assembling a space shuttle for this hard drive case, which is nonsensical for starters, but it's the weird mechanics of trying to pry the aluminum open while slipping in the hd tray that takes the cake for poor design phantasmagoria. If it weren't for the unavailability of <$100 oxford chipset cases on the market these days, I'd more seriously look at other options.

Other Thoughts: I've bought 3 of these and 2 of them have worked as promised. For the 3rd, the drive overheated after about 1 year of continuous but light use; it could have been a hard drive problem, but since it was one of those low-power-consumption WD greens, I'm guessing that the case wasn't doing enough cooling for whatever reason.

1 out of 5 eggsEnclosure just failed

Pros: Worked great - while it worked...

Cons: Enclosure just failed, and I am just within the 1 year limited warranty period. Not able to do an RMA online with Newegg, so have sent their customer a service an e-mail requesting one. Hopefully they will process this for me...

4 out of 5 eggsNice Unit but has some issues

Pros: All the ports you'll ever need. Very sleek design and if you have an iMac like me, you'll be pleased to know the finish matches the Apple's aluminum pretty well. Base is also nice and has rubber feet. On the outside, very well designed and put together. Visually appealling and satisfied with the overall purchase.

Cons: The hard drive mounting solution is terrible, to be honest. So many screws need to be removed and reinstalled that you need to focus on which screws go where so you don't mess it up. I think one other reviewer said there are 16 screws in total. Now I didn't count mine, but that sounds pretty accurate. It took me about 15-20 mins to take apart the enclosure, install the drive, then put the enclosure back together. I've had other units that have taken less than 5 mins to do all this. On the plus side (being a minor one at that), the drive is pretty secure once it is mounted. If you want an enclosure that's close to a hot-swap design, you need to look elsewhere. This is a much more permanent solution.
-1 egg from me because at this price, this enclosure should be pretty much perfect.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: All the current interfaces
Aluminum build
Looks great
No fans
Helpful manual if you need it

Cons: Way too many screws
The stand is kind of silly

Other Thoughts: Without the stand it is a little bit tough to disassemble the unit although if you have a more permanent setup you wouldn't need to always swap the drive. So mistake learned, use a HDD dock if constant swapping is required.

4 out of 5 eggsLots of screws, solid product

Pros: - Good compatible chipset
- Nice finish
- Seems to have good ventilation despite no fan
- Fast
- Cables included
- Firewire 800!

Cons: - Lots of screws. To many actually. Most cases require only a few screws to open and put a drive in, this is a whole effort.
- Sharp! The metal is nice looking, but it's corners aren't cleaned very nicely. The result is that it's somewhat sharp and can actually cut skin.

These two negatives were enough to knock an egg of the rating for me. It's a good product but has it's caveats. I would think at least the second should be easy for them to remedy.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on arrival

Pros: Nice looking, well built case. Includes ALL the cables you could possibly use.

Cons: DEAD ON ARRIVAL - never worked on USB or IEEE. Don't have eSATA so I couldn't try that.

Other Thoughts: I'll either get an eSATA card and hope that works or just return the item and look elsewhere!

4 out of 5 eggsFlexible connectivity

Pros: Goes well with MacPro case.
Firewire 400/800, eSata and USB 2 and all work well.

Cons: A little pricey.

Other Thoughts: I have a few external cases, two same exterior (one with USB only, one with Firewire/USB) for IDE. This one is SATA, and really convenient to have all kinds of bus.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very solid case.
Look & Feel even better than pictures.
Works as expected.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I just get the case. I bought it for my Macbook Pro which I haven't ordered yet. So I don't have a chance yet to get it intensively used.

4 out of 5 eggsFW 800 works well

Pros: Relatively easy set up. Inexpensive. Great heat transfer with the aluminum. Can daisy chain in FW 800, will boot a Mac. Lots of options for external interface. Quiet, it does not transfer noise from the drive. Would look just fine beside a Mac Pro. The power plug is a regular plug, with the transformer half way along the power cord. This is a great space saving for my UPS. Also, the power cord is a good length which gave me options of where to plug the drives in.

Cons: Needed 3 separate screwdrivers to open and assemble the thing. Although both enclosures looked like they were missing screws, there is small bag of screws internally that has everything needed. Instructions need to be beefier for those of us with little tech background and older eyes. You need to keep the drives in an area where there is a good airflow.

Other Thoughts: The drives are pulled from a G5 that died. I have not yet stressed the drives so I am wondering how hot them will actually get. I am hoping that I will not regret not getting a unit with a fan.
Delivery was fast. This was the first time I used Newegg.ca and would use them again based on this purchase.
