5 out of 5 eggssimple

Pros: Compact design and attractive. i was a bit afraid to do this on my own but it was simple to put together and get working. Have not had it for long but so far no problems.

Cons: the power plug being on the side is not the best design. It would be better if it was from the rear. Not really a hinderance just an annoyance if putting flush to a wall on that side.

Other Thoughts: Looking forward to no longer losing data. i got this after having several external hard drives fail....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Box!!!

Pros: Small but solid construction. Pleasant LED light arrangement, quiet. Easy setup.

Cons: None noted.

Other Thoughts: Had to replace a failed Sans Digital Raid box that was simply worn out. This one was on sale with a rebate and was the lowest priced alternative available. Super quick shipping from Newegg. Setup was easy and I had everything back up and running in no time. 4X2 TB Seagate drives in Raid 0 yielding about 7450GB of usable space. Reloading media from backup took about 16 hours. If this one lasts three years like the Sans Digital did, I'll be quite satisfied.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid RAID Box good for Household Use

Pros: Great for household use. Bought this for its self-contained RAID because portability is important to me. Documents provided leave the user wanting, but if you go to the Mediasonic website and download the documents they have you are in good shape. Easy to use and hard to screw up.

Running 4x4TB WD Reds. Seamless setup and runs cool to touch. Made the smart choice and running via USB 3.0. Transfer rates for large files (movies) ~100-140MB/sec, small files 3-5MB in size, getting ~40-60MB/s using promo expansion card Mediasonic provided. Very happy with transfer speeds and versatility of this box. If I need to expand in the future I would definitely purchase another, or get the 8-disk version.

Cons: No cons for the box to say. The drives for the USB 3.0 expansion card were very flaky with Win7. Had to load the binary driver first and then upgrade it using driver on the disk. If i just used the auto run setup i would get an installer error, which was bogus. Again though, the box functions without so much as a hiccup. Five eggs for sure.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat they don't tell you

Pros: Price

Cons: they advise using 4 identical drives for raid 10. If you have a drive failure in the future and can't get identical drives I guess you have to replace them all. Costly since they require raid rated drives. I would prefer 2 sets of mirrored drives but this is not an option, only 2 drives mirrored, 2 empty or 4 identical drives as raid 1+0 (10) ,

Other Thoughts: I should have read the support pages better and I might not have purchased this enclosure. Also appears that you cannot call them for support questions, the only have a forum. No other means of contact at all.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Inexpensive, compact.

Cons: This unit was working fine for about a week, then started randomly unmounting from my ubuntu 12.4 system mid-use. What use is 4TB of space you can't access?

Other Thoughts: it's a shame- I'm moving all the disks directly onto the board for now until I can afford a decent unit. This was $100 I didn't need to waste.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat enclosure

Pros: With little to no effort on my side, I had it up and running in a matter of minutes, and once the drives formatted, was copying my family's pictures and movies over to it. Has been reliable and extremely helpful in my home environment.

Cons: Documentation could be a bit better, but it was still enough to answer my questions.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent RAID box

Pros: I've used this box with 2x2TB drives in RAID-1 (mirroring) for over a year and haven't had any problems. The initial setup was easy and since then I haven't had to tinker with it at all - it's just rock solid. File transfers are quick over eSATA. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I needed more storage.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsMediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 2nd Unit

Pros: USB 3.0 Easy to install. Had no problem installing 2nd unit. See other thoughts for install laugh.

Cons: None so far with the 1st or 2nd units themselves. Issue which may by my PC hardware OR Win 7. About once a month, Windows says unit is unavailable but no error appears on HFR2-SU3S2 itself. Restart of Windows and everything is back to normal. NOT taking a star away since I not convinced it is the RAID box's problem. When the drives do go into sleep mode, it just takes a few seconds for them to all spin up. This was disconcerting at first. Have chosen NOT to pursue always on mode with the drives, if it is even available.

Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd HFR2-SU3S2 for additional storage. Both running in RAID 5 mode. Very satisfied with 1st one, so bought another. All drives are Seagate ST3000DM001. All have been reliable so far. I had installation issues with the 1st one and it turned out ALL of the trouble was caused by me. While setting up the 1st one, without thinking about it, I picked up a USB 3.0 cable from my stash. During the formatting phase, Windows reported that the format failed. After the 3rd try, I saw that the PROVIDED USB 3.0 cable was still in the box and was much heavier. Duh! Swapped out the cables and formatted with no problem. Double Duh!
Note: using USB controller card Mediasonic HP1-SU3 PCI Express USB 3.0
I set up the first HFR2-SU3S2 in Dec 2012, so have close to 6 months of usage on it and about 6 TB of data on it. New Unit is 5 days old and Teracopy reported back a avg of 52 MB/s on last move of 159 GB mixed data formats and sizes with 2.5 TB on 2nd unit now. On large files, I have seen avg of 101 MB/s. Yes I save anything and everything on the computers.
