4 out of 5 eggsGreat box but poor software support

Pros: I've been running three of these for over three years without any problems.
One was connected to a Linux server via USB3 and dropped occasionally but it was a USB3 drivers issue not an issue with the box.
They are all now connected via esata to Linux servers, and rock solid with 4x2TB in RAID5 mode.

Cons: Software. Absolutely no Linux support for monitoring the box status.
I'm not sure who is more to blame for this, jMicron or Mediasonic, but it's a pathetic state of affairs.
I don't need or even want a gimmicky skinned front end, I just want to see the status of the box/drives, just give me a command line program to read the status.
If any of these linux machines were desktop machines I'd try installing the jmicron software under Wine, but these are headless servers so all I want is to be able to see the status, and maybe trigger a rebuild (see below).

Other Thoughts: Both times a drive has failed in one of these they've simply disappeared from the Linux server, which I suppose is one way to know a drive has failed.
In both cases I wasn't able to get them start rebuilding to a new drive till I hooked them up (USB) to a Windows laptop running the jMicron software that can be found on Mediasonics forums (make sure you don't allow Windows to initialize the drive since it won't recognize the Linux file system)
Once the rebuild was complete I disconnected from the windows laptop, reconnected the esata cable to the Linux server and was able to remount without a problem...
Not a good scenario if your doing remote support, but sufficient for local systems.

2 out of 5 eggsThe box works fine.... when it has power

Pros: I had no problems with getting it set up and running the way it should be. The actual enclosure it self does exactly what I expected it to do.

Cons: The power cord it uses looks and feels incredibly cheap and I've had 2 fail on me now. Plugged into regular outlets, in open air so it wouldn't get overheated. That seemingly didn't work. I've found other devices that use the same brand, Shanpu Power, power supply with similar failures.

Currently waiting for a response from mediasonic about a third or possible refund on the entire thing to get something else.

5 out of 5 eggssimple

Pros: Compact design and attractive. i was a bit afraid to do this on my own but it was simple to put together and get working. Have not had it for long but so far no problems.

Cons: the power plug being on the side is not the best design. It would be better if it was from the rear. Not really a hinderance just an annoyance if putting flush to a wall on that side.

Other Thoughts: Looking forward to no longer losing data. i got this after having several external hard drives fail....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Box!!!

Pros: Small but solid construction. Pleasant LED light arrangement, quiet. Easy setup.

Cons: None noted.

Other Thoughts: Had to replace a failed Sans Digital Raid box that was simply worn out. This one was on sale with a rebate and was the lowest priced alternative available. Super quick shipping from Newegg. Setup was easy and I had everything back up and running in no time. 4X2 TB Seagate drives in Raid 0 yielding about 7450GB of usable space. Reloading media from backup took about 16 hours. If this one lasts three years like the Sans Digital did, I'll be quite satisfied.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid RAID Box good for Household Use

Pros: Great for household use. Bought this for its self-contained RAID because portability is important to me. Documents provided leave the user wanting, but if you go to the Mediasonic website and download the documents they have you are in good shape. Easy to use and hard to screw up.

Running 4x4TB WD Reds. Seamless setup and runs cool to touch. Made the smart choice and running via USB 3.0. Transfer rates for large files (movies) ~100-140MB/sec, small files 3-5MB in size, getting ~40-60MB/s using promo expansion card Mediasonic provided. Very happy with transfer speeds and versatility of this box. If I need to expand in the future I would definitely purchase another, or get the 8-disk version.

Cons: No cons for the box to say. The drives for the USB 3.0 expansion card were very flaky with Win7. Had to load the binary driver first and then upgrade it using driver on the disk. If i just used the auto run setup i would get an installer error, which was bogus. Again though, the box functions without so much as a hiccup. Five eggs for sure.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat they don't tell you

Pros: Price

Cons: they advise using 4 identical drives for raid 10. If you have a drive failure in the future and can't get identical drives I guess you have to replace them all. Costly since they require raid rated drives. I would prefer 2 sets of mirrored drives but this is not an option, only 2 drives mirrored, 2 empty or 4 identical drives as raid 1+0 (10) ,

Other Thoughts: I should have read the support pages better and I might not have purchased this enclosure. Also appears that you cannot call them for support questions, the only have a forum. No other means of contact at all.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Inexpensive, compact.

Cons: This unit was working fine for about a week, then started randomly unmounting from my ubuntu 12.4 system mid-use. What use is 4TB of space you can't access?

Other Thoughts: it's a shame- I'm moving all the disks directly onto the board for now until I can afford a decent unit. This was $100 I didn't need to waste.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat enclosure

Pros: With little to no effort on my side, I had it up and running in a matter of minutes, and once the drives formatted, was copying my family's pictures and movies over to it. Has been reliable and extremely helpful in my home environment.

Cons: Documentation could be a bit better, but it was still enough to answer my questions.
