3 out of 5 eggsGreat Server Awful Warranty

Pros: Low power 15 wat draw
IPMI
CHEAP
Makes a great firewall

Cons: Supermicro warranty is awful, as in totally awful.
1. Will charge you for a cross ship.
2. Will send a refurb or repair for a new product.
3. Will take their sweet time doing it.
I love supermicro engineering and hate the supermicro warranty. For largish orders I usually look for a supermicro rebrander who will give a better warranty.

Other Thoughts: Supermicro has said they are fixing their warranty, by adding cross ship for the first year etc for server, my experience as of this week is that it hasn't changed at all.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little server

Pros: Low power needs
Can support multiple disks
Rack mount
Chassis comes with everything expect ram and disk(s)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Using it for a gateway into a private network and also a teamspeak3 server. Runs pfSense with no problems along with software raid 1 using dual 2.5 WD disks.

5 out of 5 eggsVery capable Atom

Pros: Decent processor for a lot of applications. Low power consumption (avg 24w with ssd drive). Intel RAID with plenty of SATA ports.

Cons: There are other competitive processors/boards around this price level which are more capable than the atom processor.

Other Thoughts: I never gave ATOMs much credit, until I owner this one. It's quite the capable little fellow - I run a Windows Server 2012 with AD, DNS, IIS and a small sqlanywhere on this box for 10 PCs and so far so good. I really like the power consumption - I don't feel guilty leaving this server on. I couldn't get the IPMI feature to work yet, but that's because it's not as 1-2-3 as it should be and I just don't have the time to futz with it. The box is capable of running 8GBs of RAM and it's just plain SWEET. I like it so much, I bought a second one as a redundancy server.

5 out of 5 eggsReally nice server

Pros: This is the 5th one I buy.
I use them with FreeNAS or pfSense and I'll try pbxinaflash with the next one.
Runs cool and quiet, not power hungry and ipmi is a nice feature. No more kvm or screen attached to manage it.
Depth is really short so I can rack them along with network gear in small wall cabinets.

Cons: May be there should be holes for 2 HDD 2,5" instead of just one 3.5". I did the holes myself on 2 units.

Other Thoughts: Supermicro makes reliable servers and this units is rock solid too.
I never had power failures and some units have never been rebooted in 2 years, still working good.

4 out of 5 eggsOk low-power 2k8R2 box

Pros: Supports 8GB of DDR3. Works well with Server 2k8R2. IPMI is nice.

Cons: 4x PCIe slot means no HBA adapters that work with ESXi 4.1 are compatible. Without write-back cache enabled by HBA this server is LIMITED to 20MBps I/O in ESXi. Totally unusable as a ESXi whitebox.

Despite having a fanless heatsink and chassis the power supply fan is quite loud.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little server

Pros: Small, inexpensive, cool.

Cons: CMOS batteries seemed dead.

Other Thoughts: Got 2 of these to use as IPCop firewalls; IPCop v2 installed fine & saw the NICs no problem. Only issue was that both of them would lose their BIOS settings if left unplugged; I popped in a new 2032 & that seemed to do the trick. I liked that there was a riser for the PCI card since I added a 3rd NIC. For the price I think it's a great little box.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little box

Pros: works with 8gb ram Crucial CT2KIT51264BC1339 good ol Micron made right here in Utah this box does mucho

Cons: 0

Other Thoughts: got two of theses babies. 1 does data backups with six 2tb wd 2.5" hds, with OS running on 124gb mSata via pcix slot. Move page file and temp folder off mSata . just drill yer own holes. #2 has 2x 3tb 3.5" WD reds and 1-250gb 2.5" for OS. blocking off front air vents increases airflow over cpu and hds. it works

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little box!

Pros: IPMI, Dual Intel Gigabit LAN, low power

Cons: fan is a bit noisier than on the 510 model (same PS)

Other Thoughts: I have these deployed as firewalls (running OpenBSD) and they work great. Also in use as Linux server for small businesses.
I have had a power supply failure on one box and suggest that if you deploy these in critical scenarios to keep an extra PS around - Newegg sells these:

1 out of 5 eggsfairweather (redacted)

Pros: This server is AWESOME, don't let the egg count fool you. This server has FIVE eggs in my book. Where else can you get IPMI for about $300? It's quiet, runs cool, and makes a FANTASTIC pfSense rig.

Cons: The reason you can only see one is because (redacted) caused this purchase to lose four eggs when it decided to drop the price thirty bucks and not charge for shipping about a week after purchase as part of their "Ferrite Embryo" policy. Their rationale is that it wasn't a "Ferrite Embryo" item at the time I purchased, even though it falls within the dates of the "Ferrite Embryo" period. Thanks, (redacted). This is how you show appreciation to a loyal ten year customer. Oh, actually it shows your "Ferrite Embryo" policy is intended solely to lure business away from competitors, and also have the unintended consequence of infuriating your existing ones.... What do you do, every time you mark a product as part of the "Ferrite Embryo" program and one of your customers calls you on it, you tell them to get lost? Because that's what you did to this one.

Other Thoughts: I remember when (redacted) used to offer free FedEx Express Saver shipping and customer service was their priority. Now it's purely making money and forcing their customers to fight them tooth and nail every step of the way to get a quality product at a fair price-- yes, fair, (redacted) is by no means the lowest price in town. And now that they're not the best at customer service anymore, I see no real reason to maintain loyalty. There are plenty of other vendors out there who have better customer service and take a lot more care in how they ship their products. Quit blowing money on commercials, (redacted), and get back to delivering on customer service, and fast... You guys know how fast the online retail market moves.
