2 out of 5 eggsMan, are they still selling this thing?

Pros: Get crystal clear TV on your computer.

Cons: Interface is like a DOS program. And not user friendly.

Other Thoughts: I bought two. One didn't work. It's been a long time, but there was some kind of a verification required, maybe between a serial number on the included CD and the serial number inside the dongle's firmware, before the dongle would start receiving. One of the two that I bought wouldn't verify. Shame on me for not pursuing a resolution.

3 out of 5 eggsPower and/or USB Compatibility Problems

Pros: * Compatible with Win 7 64 Windows Media Center
* Works in a dual-tuner setup
* Fairly good signal sensitivity

Cons: * Has some sort of problem with power requirements or USB compatibility that almost made me chuck it (see below)

Other Thoughts: I installed this unit as the second tuner in a dual-tuner WMC setup, along with an older KWorld 445 hybrid tuner stick, with both tuners receiving OTA ATSC.

Driver installation, device detection, and channel setup in Media Center seemed to go fine, but then when I tried to actually watch or record TV, I'd get a No Signal error on BOTH tuners, this 435 and the previously functional 445.

I tried all the usual voodoo: uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, restarting, unplugging and re-plugging the devices, re-scanning channels, etc. No dice.

What finally got the thing to work was moving it to a different USB port. Although it was on its own port (not an external hub), Windows device manager reported that the ports for both tuners were on the same host controller. I don't know if it was drawing too much power, or had some other driver or USB hub compatibility problem, but it works great now that it is no longer sharing any resources with the other tuner.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the "it's junk, doesn't work" reviews are due to some variation of the problem I encountered. I was just about to post a 1-star review myself when I finally got the thing working. Clearly this tuner stick has some serious issues, but it's fine IF you can work around those issues.

I'm posting this review in the hopes that some other purchasers will see it and be able to get their 435 to work also. However, based on my experience, you'd be better off spending a little more for the 445. I expect my better experience with that product is due to its more mature Conexant chip set.

5 out of 5 eggsGood unit

Pros: Easy install
Works with Linux
Good quality

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Bought this to pick up ATSC channels for my MythTV box. Works very well with Slackware 14.1 (I'm running the 3.18.11 kernel from -current.) Just plugged it in and added it to my tuner list with no issues.

Sensitivity is good - it picks up channels as well as my TV's ATSC tuner does, with no drop-outs or bad channels.

The bundled antenna is directional (needs to be repositioned for each channel) so isn't terribly useful for a media center, but would probably be fine for watching TV on the go. (I'd planned on using my own omnidrectional antenna anyway, so this isn't an issue for me.)

Overall very pleased with this unit!

2 out of 5 eggspoor performer

Pros: picks up many but not all the OTA channels
it does work, sort of, on both desktop and on laptop

Cons: in spite of installing updated driver for Win 8, the images stutter, CTD, stops responding; frequently have to use task manager to stop and start over
Same problem but not quite as bad when using on a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop
ArcSoft TotalMedia s/w bundled with it is primitive and limited.
Only OTA channels it recognizes are the ones it scans, you can not enter a specific channel
The s/w does not have a feature to switch to previous channel.

Other Thoughts: Kworld has yet to respond (over a week old now) to question I sent
some people wrote they got VLC working with this tuner, but details are limited and may have been under Linux; I use Windows.
ArcSoft said they wrote the s/w app with features at the direction of Kworld. No update in s/w since say 2010 other than a driver released about 2012

All in all, just barely worth the price. I get to watch the few channels I want, but the image and sound stutters and halts and on other channels the s/w just stops period that I use Task Manager to end the process and start over. I had hoped for better than what it delivers. Oh, and there's no rhyme nor reason to why it opens the channel it does when the s/w is started.

3 out of 5 eggsKnow product limitations

Pros: HD recording, Ease of use with Windows Media Center. Good price.

Cons: Records in a MPG format that can only be read by authoring computer meaning you can not watch what you recorded on another computer or watch what has been recorded and record another program at the same time, this severely restricts the freedom to watch what you want when you want. At first I could only get the USB tuner to stay on for a few minutes, then it would lose the connection every time and be quite hot. I finally figured out that it required a separately powered USB port (not a seprerate port, just the the USB hub must have a robust power supply). Once on a powered USB port it has work reliably.

4 out of 5 eggsCool Beans

Pros: Nice price, fast free shipping.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I love reading reviews about products on this site, how people have horrible things to say about products and how they break in ten minutes. So far everything I have purchased on this site does what it is suppose to. But hey, stuff happens, that is to be expected with any purchase online or in a brick & mortar store. It's stil funny as heck reading some of these reviews. (^_^)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works on windows 7 64 with windows media center. I can watch local channels now.

Cons: Its only digital, I was hoping to hook up my old VHS player to transfer some old movies over, but the vhs player is analog. Oh well, no big deal, I ordered another device for that.
