5 out of 5 eggsEasy to navigate for an intermediate

Pros: No compatibility issues at all with my other gear. HDMI onboard, plenty of space and slots for everything.
BIOS is super easy to navigate and tweak with.

Cons: Heatsink above the processor is a bit big, took some careful moves to get everything in the case properly. It worked out though.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat features and price, but poor build quality and questionable reliability

Pros: Feature rich motherboard with plenty of bells and whistles for a low price. Really like the onboard power button, reset button, clear CMOS button, and diagnostic 2 digit LED which makes boot troubleshooting effortless; these are features that usually require 'stepping up' to a more premium model board to get. Board also has 2 BIOS chips and a selectable switch, so if you somehow corrupt the primary BIOS, you can switch over to the backup copy (secondary) and still have a running computer.

Board is packed very nicely, with a foam “frame” around the perimeter of the board in the box so it is protected from possible damage from a rough transit to your door.

CPU socket area is nice and tidy and pretty unobstructed, so large coolers are easy to mount and fit without any problem. Had no issues whatsoever installing my i7 4790K and Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo cooler.

Board design is very good, with the primary black color scheme, with the gold solid capacitors, and aqua blue heatsinks.

Supports both SLI and CF, and there's a nice gap between PCIe slot 1 and slot 2 so if you're running either, there should be enough airflow to allow for both cards to breathe.

Tons of SATA3 and USB3 ports and headers on the board.

12 power phases and an excellently laid out BIOS make overclocking fairly easy and help to keep stability when the system is running at load. Was able to OC my 4790K to 4.6GHz easily, and the board had no issues while running Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility for stress testing.

Cons: Very thin PCB compared to other manufacturer's boards. This seems to be where ASRock does their cost cutting – they use very thin PCB's. Having owned several ASRock boards, and several Gigabyte, Asus, Abit as well as EVGA and Super Micro – every single ASRock board has had a thin, flimsy PCB. They flex and bend too easily. They work; don't get me wrong – but, they scare me.

My Hyper 212 Evo weighs 465g (1.03 lbs) without the fan. I'd be afraid to install a bigger, heavier heatsink on this board such as the Noctua NH-D14 which is 900g (nearly 2 lbs) because of how thin the PCB is. Even installing my 2 DDR3 dimms and my 2 R9 270 cards, I did not like how much the board flexed due to the pressure of pushing these parts in their slots – and keep in mind, I'm using “regular” pressure, I wasn't using exorbitant force.

The board almost looks warped due to the thinness and flex, like an old record left out in the sun.

Other Thoughts: Looking at other reviews, I'm a little leery of the actual long term reliability. I've had one other ASRock board up and die in the middle of the night (an X58 Extreme); they did replace it under warranty though. Comparatively I've got several other-brand boards still up and running, going strong for 5 years now. I almost wonder if the thinner PCB of ASRock boards is the culprit here, but I have no evidence either way. You do get a 3 year warranty with the Extreme4, though hopefully you'll never need it.

For the price and the features you get, this is a great deal – but I honestly cannot recommend it due to the thin PCB. Instead, I would pick either the Asus Z97-A or a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H which have the same core features for the same price here at NewEgg. In fact, I think the only thing that either of those is missing over the Extreme4 is the omboard power/reset/CLR CMOS buttons and the LED readout, and really, I'd rather have the thicker PCB (of either of those) than the buttons on this.

3 out of 5 eggsDied within a month.

Pros: Great motherboard, has everything I expect from a z97 motherboard at this price range. M.2, 3-way SLI, and a power and reset switch on the board.

Cons: It died within 1 month, my computer just shutdown midgame, after that it would not post at all. I thought it was my psu at first, but after ordering it and trying it out with the new one, it didn't work. I decided to keep my psu because I liked it so much, but when I went to RMA this board, newegg asked if there was any damage to the board, I said no after inspecting it. I recently got an email saying there was damage to the board, they said the cpu pins were bent, which wouldn't make any sense because how could they have gotten bent while the cpu was in the motherboard? They've gotten bent during shipping. So now I have to spend money on a whole new motherboard, they gave me a 10% off code to buy another one of these. Thanks newegg I enjoyed my first 3 weeks with this I look forward to buying one of these every 3 weeks.

Other Thoughts: I gave this 3 stars because how great the 3 weeks I had with it was, 2 stars off for the 2 weeks I wasted to get a replacement that would never come.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
The CPU socket has been covered with protection CAP to avoid damage the pins.
CPU contact pins on the mainboard are fragile and need to be careful to avoid physical damage and affect the limited warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsNot looking good

Pros: Worked great for 5 weeks. Easy to get setup, and I was very happy with its performance while it worked. Looks cool to.

Cons: Unfortunately after 5 weeks it's stopped working. Pretty much just like others here have mentioned. Went to power it up, and nothing. I ran through all the troubleshooting and had no problem getting the RMA Process going with ASRock since it was past the Newegg 30 day policy.

The turnaround was pretty quick, and I received my replacement board yesterday. But, the board they sent me seems to have been a refurbished board, and was missing the Bios B chip, thus losing the dual bios feature which I and anyone else who buys this board pays for. Unacceptable. I have contacted ASRock again and hope they see that they messed up and fix this ASAP.

Other Thoughts: They were good up to this point, but sending a replacement that doesn't have the same features you paid for is not a good way to keep customers happy. Beware. Double check replacements you receive before reinstalling them. Make sure you are getting back what you paid for.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that the mainboard has missing B BIOS. However, all replacement mainboards are fully tested and inspected.
We will be more than glad to send the missing BIOS chip.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this.

Pros: Nice design, or so I thought

Cons: Died after 4 months. I used to be an Asus guy, and I thought I would try an Asrock, after all the good reviews. Well my Asus boards from 6 years ago still work, and this Asrock board dies within 4 months. I'll NEVER buy Asrock ever again!

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this board.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that the mainboard has malfunctioned after 4 months which’s due to nature of electronic product, it can happen.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard to check if it's resolved.
Clear the CMOS.
Test with single memory module.
Test with onboard VGA.

If problem still persist, please contact us at http://www.ASRock.com/support/tsd.asp. We will assist you shortly.

3 out of 5 eggsBeware

Pros: Nice looking board. Many features.

Cons: See other thoughts-

Other Thoughts: Received this board on time from Newegg and was pleased with what I saw. Installation was easy and had everything up and running first try. However after a day the board died. Pushed the on button and nothing. After a few tests it was no doubt a dead board. I got the RMA request and just went to pack everything up. As I was putting the packing pieces back on the board, I was having issues getting that plastic CPU socket protector back in place. I was being extremely delicate but the plastic cover had a burr on it's edge just big enough to bend pins as you closed the retainer. So now I'm out $140 and no board. I know Newegg will deny my RMA based on this so I would advise watching out for this if you ever have to return a Mobo.

4 out of 5 eggsGood budget MOBO/Bad Rebate Process

Pros: Great motherboard with a lot of features for an affordable price. UEFI BIOS is easy to use and you can even use a mouse. First time I've ever seen that.

Cons: Placement of SATA connectors could be better. ASRock has a horrible rebate process. You have to fill out an online form and the form doesn't even do basic validation of required fields. If you miss a field, you can't go back and edit the existing submission. So basically if you do it wrong, you're out of luck. Either utter incompetence or just shady rebates. If the rebate is enticing you buy this item, buy something else.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

1 out of 5 eggsWell it's pretty.

Pros: Good features, Good price.

Cons: Job #1 is to function...Not happening. Appears to be a issue that gets a lot of talk in the forums, but as yet no solution. Sent a service ticket to ASROCK and they said I should talk to the vendor. So do they keep sending them out til I find one that works?

Other Thoughts: Getting A2 error code indicating sata/ide error. Using a new 512gb SSD, Asus DVD to load new wWin 8.1 Pro 64bit. 16gb ram and Intel I7-4790K. MB has latest Bios, swapped, sata cables, Sata power connectors, tried different ram, single stick. Trying to load with integrated graphics then will install card. Everything else has been tested and passed except MB & CPU.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Code "A2" should be screen display.
Please press F2 or Del to check if it’s changed to "Ab" (BIOS screen).
Remove discrete VGA card.
Test with onboard VGA.
Try with another monitor and cable if problem still persist.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 6 weeks

Pros: No major issues at first. I selected this ASRock board because it was recommended by others and has nice features, so I gave it a shot with a new PC build last month.

Cons: Was working day after day for weeks. Yesterday, pressed power button and got nothing. Cleared CMOS, still dead. Swapped PSU from one of my other servers, still dead.

Motherboard is now outside of newegg's 30-day return policy, so I submitted a ticket with ASRock and am now waiting for their response. I'll update this post with results.

Other Thoughts: I'm looking forward to a good first experience with ASRock customer support.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

Sorry to hear that the mainboard has malfunctioned after 6 weeks which’s due to nature of electronic product, it can happen.
Please trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
Remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box.
Remove all components from mainboard.
Clear the CMOS.
Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan.
Plug the 24 + 8 or 4 pins ATX power.
Turn the power on (using onboard power button) to check if its get the power.
Populate the components one by one to test for screen POST if it gets the power

4 out of 5 eggsBest Board for your Money!

Pros: + Simple, elegant UEFI BIOS
+ DEBUG LED Extremely helpful
+ Back up BIOS A/B, life saver
+ Very easy, stable overclockable board
+ Runs very stable with Windows 8
+ Legendary build quality
+ Plenty of USB 3 ports and USB 2 compatible ports
+ Slick blue/black interface look

Cons: - Headphones / Mic quality not good = due to audio driver
- WAKE ON Feature unstable

Other Thoughts: What can I say more, that hasn't already been said about this fantastic motherboard? I cannot recommend this board enough! Seriously, if you have any inkling of doubt as to whether to get this board or not, do not waste another minute!

The Z97 EXTREME4 board is one of the best Z97 boards out there in the market right now. I decided to go with the Asrock one, because this board has been tested to provide a really nice solid overclock for any of the intel K processors. Without going into too much details, the capacitors on this board are of high quality and my overclock benefited greatly from this. If you are not in the market for an overclock, this board is a really good one regardless, in case you do plan to overclock in the future.

The included A-tuning overclocking software is a basic app. If you plan to overclock, do it manually.
I did try A-tuning out, and it worked out for the most part. The best part of the board was the most effective UEFI I have ever seen. The interface was fluid and easy to navigate, and every settings from XMP Profile to C states are configurable with a click of a button.

The only thing that takes away from this amazing motherboard is the gimmick of an "audio solution". The Purity Sound driver is average at best. I'm not an audiophile to say the least, but this board is not impressive in the audio department.

**To sum up: ASRock has found the sweet spot here. The price for the Z97 is really good for all of the features and qualities that it dishes out. Buy this motherboard for your new build and you won't regret it.
