4 out of 5 eggsASUS again

Pros: Affordable solution
Expandability
Made by ASUS

Cons: Too many really similar models
Color pattern is weird to me

Other Thoughts: My ASUS P5N-D finally died after years of abuse (CGI rendering, and gaming). Always had a great experience from ASUS, so when the time came, I got another.

The BIOS is a massive upgrade from the DOS interface from the 775 boards, and the manual is very inclusive. Like I said in the cons though, the Z87 comes in 5 or 6 very similar, and none quiet perfect varieties. But to be fair, I don't think the Z87 is the best chipset due to its limited lanes (40), and the inclusion of experimental ports nobody will remember in 3 years. Not ASUS's fault.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 10 months

Pros: The board worked fine until it died with no warning. I got it on a Black Friday deal and it was a good price.

Cons: Despite the bad reviews, I purchased this board last year on Black Friday. It worked really well until approximately 10 months later when it no longer would power on.

I tried changing the power supply, the power switch, and the wiring to no avail. Popped in a new motherboard and my computer started right up. I've owned computers since 1992 and never had a motherboard die this quickly.

I'm about to enter the RMA process so we will see how smoothly that goes.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Randy,

I am sorry to hear about the issues you ran into with the board. I will be happy to assist you with your current RMA if you have any issues during the process. When contacting me, so that I may look into your case further, please provide me with your RMA number that you receive. Please include your reference number as well within the subject line. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you had tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you!Cs#

3 out of 5 eggsUsed for new price.... Thanks guys...

Pros: Works well - very fast with SSD and i5 processor.

Cons: 97% sure that NEWEGG sent me a used board at a new price. No seal on the anti-static bag, and BOTH sides of the anti-static bag had the markings you find on the underside of the bag from where the solder pokes into it. Also, on first boot it gave me a message indicating there was a change in processor / ram since last boot

Other Thoughts: Don't have a problem with the board, but it is pretty despicable to sell off used components as new.

2 out of 5 eggsCheck your power supply!

Pros: Board has nice included BIOS (When you can get to it) and a super easy/fast Firmware update process.

Cons: This board has issues with quite a few different power supplies. After bench testing my parts with this motherboard and a new CPU (4460) the red CPU error LED on the board stays lit. I changed out parts until the only factor left was the PSU. Plugged in an old PSU that I had laying around and the board booted perfectly to my OS. I did lots of research around the internet and found this is a very common issue on this series of boards, and apparently ASUS Z87 boards in general. I tried many supposed fixes or work-arounds but none of them made any difference for me.
Seeing as how my old PSU won't power all my components, and my current PSU is almost brand new and shouldn't have any problems, I've had no choice but to return the board to purchase a different brand and hope for the best.

Other Thoughts: I really wish this didn't have the problem it does. Seemed like a great board for a great price. I like the layout, the features and as I mentioned, the BIOS was really well thought out. What a shame.

1 out of 5 eggsHad Problems Since Day One

Pros: Looks nice, boasts to offer lots of features for a cheap price.

Cons: Unreliable.

Other Thoughts: I keep getting a blue screen at random with an error that read "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR" I've swapped out many of my parts to see if they were the problem such as my RAM and GPU still having problems. I've updated my drivers and it still hasn't fixed the problem. It happens at random, as little as once a week to five times a day. It's been happening since day one, I've just been tolerating it but now it's kinda been driving me crazy. Just filed an RMA. It's been a small thorn in my business's side and I just want to get things fixed.

1 out of 5 eggslasted 6 months

Pros: Nice set of features for the price, the bios is nice, super easy setup

Cons: It died... mine lasted 6 months. look at all of the other reviews for dead boads... Ugh.
I've put together PC's for 25+ years and this is actually my 1st motherboard to go bad.
RMA'D to ASUS, they were quick to respond to email.

3 out of 5 eggsMy thoughts on the Z87-a

Pros: This board has been relatively solid for me for about 6 months now, but be weary it seems others are reporting quality issues with the board. Decent amount of features for a cheap motherboard. got it on a crazy black-Friday special.

Cons: I expected this but almost all of the marketed features (Fan optimizatoin ....etc) are only available for windows as I use linux I just deal with the load fans although it was entirely possible to put the fan control into the UEFI as evidenced by the Z97-A. Its 2014 real computer users dont use Windows anymore...

Other Thoughts: just buy the newer asus boards there really isn't a reason to look at these unless there is a crazy deal. I am wishing my board would magiclly turn into a Z97-A.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works, but with some problems.

Pros: It works pretty stable. but problems mentioned in cons are pretty annoying.

Cons: - this board has very noisy power supply. Sometimes just scrolling page in the browser it makes high pitch noise or under some circumstances very audible buzz.

- compatibility problems. I have OCZ-AGILITY II SSD as boot drive. multiple problems booting from the drive. (that drive worked on my previous board without any problem). Sometimes BIOS (meaning EFI) won't see the drive until several restarts. Even after drive is detected makes it hard for boot as it stops halfway on system boot. Some investigation of the problem showed that booting problem may be related to incompatibility of this board with Linux. And Asus refuses to fix the problem.
To be fair I've updated both BIOS and SSD firmware to latest version, but problem won't go away. So I can't have remote reboot and be sure that system will came back as expected.

- this is problem for many other boards as well, but it doesn't have ATX mounting holes on the edge near memory and power supply connector. So during installation of memory and connecting power board can flex and/or damage.

Other Thoughts: System Configuration
i7-4770k
Z78-A
32GB RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series)
60GB OCZ-AGILITY II SSD
4 HDD (1TB, 1TB, 2TB, 2TB)
Linux Mint

2 out of 5 eggsDecent board, awful support

Pros: At ~$120 when I got mine, it was one of the cheaper Z87 boards
Decent selection of ports and headers

Cons: Automatic overclocking is a joke. Using it guarantees you're going to be rolling back to defaults to clean up it's mess
Died at just over 11 months old
Support has ranged from "trying to help, but encumbered with scripts and red tape" to "blame everyone and everything else"

Other Thoughts: Finally got some free time, thought I would give manual overclocking a whirl. Before I started, I decided to reset to factory defaults to clear out the various power-saving I'd turned on. Immediately after loading optimized defaults it stopped POSTing. Removed the power, cleared the CMOS, removed the GPU, removed the drives, shuffled the RAM around, tried someone else's RAM... no dice. Called support, was told that it was probably the CPU based on the case speaker not even giving an error beep. RMA'd the processor, still didn't post. Opened a warranty claim on the board.

Earlier this week the replacement board came in, and two of the RAM slots cause a failure to POST when occupied. Called support and they said that they found nothing wrong with my board and sent it back, but the CPU socket is a different color and the S/N sticker changed, so what really happened is anyone's guess. They gave me a label to send the board back, but my new RMA number doesn't return a result in their online RMA status page, so who knows when I'll be back online.

Asus is having support and QC problems. AVOID.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Board

Pros: Good price, really neat BIOS options. Never used the overclocking utility, but there is an automatic one in BIOS for those interested.

Cons: Mine failed on me less than a year after I bought it. However, it should be noted that I spilled a drink on my case and I think that may have been what caused it. I'll never know for sure.

Other Thoughts: I see a lot of bad reviews here about the board failing shortly after purchase or dead on arrival. Maybe these boards have something faulty with them.
