5 out of 5 eggsASUS ROG

Pros: Great MB perfect for the gamer. Many features for over clocking and monitoring tools.

Cons: Design of the placement of the Bluetooth and MSATA Drive. It is very difficult to get to if you ever need to service the equipment.

Other Thoughts: MB is a little on the pricey side but normally gamers do not mind to shell out the extra cash.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Board

Pros: Supports 4 way SLI, great overclocking board, lots of connectivity, innovative features, solid performance, excellent digi-VRM, etc, etc, etc.

Let's face it, if you are reading this review, you know what you are looking at here. This board was built for cutting edge...bleeding edge tech and ASUS doesn't disappoint in this regard.

mPCIe combo card is a really cool feature for integrating bluetooth, wi-fi and mSATA drive.

Tweakers paradise, the UEFI is hands down the most advanced on the market.

Cons: ASUS has implemented a second tier on-board audio solution, which makes no sense. The Formula board includes their Supreme FX audio with "Red Line" PCB separation for clean clear audio. The Maximus V Extreme includes Realtek ALC898 and does not use the "Red Line".

ASUS claims this is because "enthusiasts" use their own dedicated audio cards which is fine for them. Adding better on-board audio does not prevent them from using a dedicated card. However, NOT having a dedicated audio card means owners of this TOP TIER motherboard will be stuck with second tier audio unless they BYOA (bring your own audio).

It's a bit like buying a luxury car then having the mfg. tell you that they have included a lower end stereo because a lot of buyers go out and buy custom sound systems. What the heck.

So the main argument of course is price (i.e. customers would be "paying" for higher end on-board audio they don't use), not including the higher end on-board audio saves money. In theory this is correct, but if you are spending this kind of money on a high end motherboard price is less of a factor.

So why does it matter? I mean, if money is less of an issue, why not just buy the high end dedicated audio card?

So if you are among those rare birds who want to run 4 way SLI (a BIG selling point for this board) then you will need all those slots. Running an audio card will eat up one of those slots.

But of course it's not just 4 way SLI that could be impacted. If you want to run additional PCIe cards for dedicated RAID, video capture cards, PCIe SSD, etc. you will lose a slot to the audio card. This directly impacts how you will build your system. This is important, much more important IMO than the risk of having 2 higher end audio solutions on a single system.

The end result here is that you end up installing a dedicated audio card and have pretty much the same PCIe slots as you would with the Formula board.

So why bother buying the Extreme? I bought this board knowing it's limitations and if not for the good deal I got ($50 MIR) I would have gone with the Formula.

I am not an audiophile for the most part, and I did get a deal on the board, because it's last gen. So I do feel I got a good deal on the board.

However, I am disappointed ASUS refuses to put their top tier audio on their top tier board. It will prevent me from buying an "Extreme" board again.

I shouldn't have to sacrifice a slot or adjust my build just because ASUS refuses to include the best of the best for their on-board audio.

The mPCIe Combo Card is neat, but this was their first generation and it has some limits, also the bluetooth on mine keeps dropping in and out which is annoying.

Other Thoughts: The mPCIe Combo Card connects directly to the motherboard and is secured using a screw from the bottom of the board.

What this means, is that, if you want to upgrade the mPCIe Combo Card you have to basically pull the motherboard. The wi-fi is upgradable and I look forward to adding an mSATA SSD to play around with and run some benchmarks. ASUS put heat shrink on the wifi antenna cables which makes it VERY difficult to install. The connectors kept popping off when I tried to install the motherboard and I had to cut off the heat shrink to get them to stay on.

Be aware that installing an mSATA SSD does not give you "additional" storage per say. Instead, when you install the mSATA SSD it will disable one of your SATA II ports. Which brings me to the other limit of the mPCIe Combo Card, it operates on SATA II, which means speed will be limited accordingly. Something to keep in mind for SSD caching if that is the plan for your build. You may be better off sticking with a less expensive 2.5 inch SATA III SSD plugged into a regular SATA III port for caching.

I will be doing some extensive testing on the mPCI Combo Card as well as the newer mPCIe Combo Card II when the Z97 boards come out. That is assuming ASUS keeps the mPCIe Combo Card, which I hope they do.

Corsair Link software doesn't play nice with this board. I do not recommend using an h100i cooler with this board. Go for an h105 or similar non-link based cooling solution that will allow you to plug the fans directly into the board and control them through the ASUS software.

Overall this is a really good board and despite the second tier audio solution I do not "regret" buying the board for the price I paid.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat motherboard

Pros: Very stable motherboard. Fast and robust. Many great features in the BIOs/UEFI. Simple to use overclocking profiles (if wanted).

Cons: None that I can think of, never had any operational issues with this bad boy.

Other Thoughts: People with the memory error - I had the same problem. If you did not buy a speed of memory that was 1600 or less, and you loaded your motherboards memory banks without first altering your BIOs clock speeds to accomodate for the higher clocked memory, then you're going to get memory errors on POST. Nothing wrong with your board, just under-educated.

5 out of 5 eggsvery nice motherboard

Pros: this board is great. lets me push my 3770k past my best overclock of 4.4GHz to 4.8GHz and all i changed was the motherboard. bios is great and has all you would ever want in it. works great, looks great, runs great!

Cons: just a little pricey for an older socket.

Other Thoughts: super happy with this board. don't think there's a better one out there for ivy bridge.

1 out of 5 eggsAsus service

Pros: Works great when it worked

Cons: Asus service is very dishonest

Other Thoughts: I have had this board for a little over a year and had small problems with not reading memory and not seeing aaapcie slots and was always able to fix with help of customer support. Well what ever it was that was causing problem failed fianally so it was still under warranty so I RMAed it but first after reading so many bad reviews on the RMA dept. about bent pins I took it to a local electronics store and had the socket checked they certified that the socket was good and I sent it in. And low and behold they had another hole card they say i scratched traces on the board. Come on they want me to pay over $300.00 with shipping to replace my board . I would think Asus would be more forthcoming than to steal from their loyal customers every computer I build had Asus productsand I have built several I use asus graphics cards and monitors even optical drives when called fo you might say I WAS an asus fanboy. BUT NEVER AGAIN I strongly suggest against the purchace of any asus products

Pros: looks great, runs great with my 3770k OC to 4.2GHz
veryu happy so far

Cons: only thing i was annoying about was that it didn't include the asus Q-connector, even though it said it was included so it was a pain to get them in with my hands being a bit big

5 out of 5 eggsBest of Quality

Pros: The board is built solid with quality materials. This is an Extended ATX with 4 way SLI capability (2 way SLI x16) in the first 2 slots. It has mSATA which is cool and WiFi/Bluetooth.
Comes with a 1/2" user manual that is all English and a dual function BIOS with easy and advanced modes.
I replaced my old motherboard with this in about 3 hours. I had to update the BIOS but it started up the first time. I updated the drivers and BAM, This thing is a BEAST!!!
This is probably the best motherboard available for the Z77. ROG boards tend to be pricey but are top shelf.

Cons: Not really a con but I was delayed with the installation trying to figure out how to get my Graphics card in the #1 PCIe slot. I have a CPU water cooler and the radiator is a little too big, I am running my graphics from the #2 for now.

Other Thoughts: Even with my full tower case this board is a little wide.
I had removed my CPU radiator to install it so I was able to install the mSATA/ WiFi after it was in my case.

I had a terrible customer service experience in 2008 with ASUS and have not used any of their motherboards until now. ASUS has won me back!!!
In my opinion... ASUS makes the best motherboards in the world but I feel for you if you have an issue.
I wish ASUS would improve their customer service to match the quality of their products.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected but a bit pricey

Pros: Looks great performs well has a lot of PCI-e slots

Cons: Expensive nearly impossible to get the rebate and it took awhile to get the network port working with my linux box.

Other Thoughts: A good motherboard but I can't help feeling angry about the rebate becasue I was not given the correct peices to send them so now I am out 50 bucks on an overpriced mobo.

4 out of 5 eggsMaximus V Extreme

Pros: Massive
Amazing overclocking features.
High quality build.
The best Z77 board on the planet!

Cons: Shipping with a bios that was two updates behind.
The Wifi, Blue tooth adapter has to be installed before the motherboard is installed, but the directions say nothing about that. After updating the bios to current version, no longer likes the overclock I put on the RAM. Started blue screening until I downclocked the RAM again.

Other Thoughts: Over all I am happy with this mother board. I will chalk the Wifi adapter install issue as my fault since I didn't read that until later. Disapponted in the Bios being over a full year behind current version and that is the only reason I took an egg off. So far after adjusting the RAM it has been very stable even at a 5Ghz overclock.
