1 out of 5 eggsHorrified By ASUS Customer Support. They broke my board!!

Pros: I have used this board for 3 years now with no problems - it's worked great and I planned to squeeze another 3 years out of it before my next major build. Six years of service seemed like a reasonable expectation for this board given the 5-year warranty, which was a major factor in my decision to purchase.

Build:
i7-3820 3.6 GHz Quad-Core
Corsair CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9 (Two sets of 4x4GB for 32GB RAM)
evGA GTX 760

Cons: At the start of the new year one of the fans in the board had the telltale noise of a bad bearing. "Not to worry," I thought, naively. "It's still under warranty!"
So I mistakenly initiated the RMA process, which took 3 contacts just to get the RMA approved. I had to explain to them each time that the fan came with and was attached to the board - they insisted several times that I must be talking about a case fan from a 3rd party. Ugh, I know the difference. So I finally got the paperwork, paid the shipping, and sent my board off.
After 2 weeks of waiting, I get the board back with a new fan. And I'm happy - for about as long as it takes me to rebuild my computer. Now the board refuses to post into bios (DRAM LED stays lit, indicating memory problem). These are the same DIMMs I've used for years, and I run them through MemTest+ on an annual basis - they are not the problem.
Several starts and restarts using the MemOK button on the board finally gets me into bios - but it only shows half of my memory as present. Messing around with config changes does no good because a restart results in the same DRAM error. And, for the record, I've tried every conceivable memory configuration as outlined in the product manual with the same result.
So I contact ASUS support once more and tell them the board will not post, to which they calmly reply that I should just boot it up, go into Windows and change some settings. I tell them to try again. They tell me to reflash the bios. Now the BIOS is flashed and there's no improvement.
So, instead of just issuing the RMA, they are wanting to make sure I know that dual channel requires two identical DIMMs. This is all especially frustrating because I have already explained the problem to them multiple times and every time I talk to them it is like starting from scratch, but they don't hear me when I tell them what steps I've already taken. It's absolutely maddening to be treated this way.

Other Thoughts: ASUS broke my board - a simple fan replacement was turned into a full-stop disaster.

I originally invested in this board because of the 5-year warranty. It seemed like ASUS was justifying its claim that this was a quality board to build on. That's all gone up in smoke now and all because of a bad fan three years in.

I have recommended ASUS in the past and have built several other systems using their hardware, but I'm done now. They've lost me as a customer because their support is absolutely horrendous.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsNot encouraging.

Pros: Haven't had it operational long enough to discover any. It looks pretty.

Cons: Memory Issues. Rig was built per Maximum PC's specs from March 2014 and I bought everything as a bundle from NewEgg. Started with 16G of G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800). Bios screen showed all 4 sticks, but Windows and CPU-Z only recognized 12G. Swapped them around and nothing changed, so I step up to 32G of G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 1 DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000), which is listed as a supported memory. Again, bios screen recognizes there are 8 sticks installed as does Windows now but CPU-Z only still only sees 24G. Dug a little deeper and both B channel slots are showing 'Abnormal'. From my research this sounds like this is a very common problem with no real solution. My choice now is to live with it or deal with ASUS poor customer service, which sounds like a waste of time.

Other Thoughts: To be fair, the parts for this rig sat for almost two years before I was able to get it assembled and running due to health issues. Had I been able to get it together right after purchase NewEgg would have been able to replace the MoBo. I'm running whatever drivers and BIOS version came with it and my next step will update everything but I'm not optimistic. On the plus side it seems to run fine for now so I'll probably just put up with it, but based on this experience and reports from others about poor support from ASUS this will be the last product of theirs I buy. I'd be willing to spend the $ to replace it but the market isn't exactly flooded with boards for a 2011 socket and I'm not willing to spend the money for a complete board, cpu, and memory upgrade at this time. When I am I will probably go back to Gigabyte, which is what I've used in my last two builds, which were flawless.

1 out of 5 eggs3rd time problems with this board

Pros: When this board works it is awesome! I used it for nearly 2 years with virtually no apparent problems.
Sys specs
Intel i7-4820k
64GB DDR (all 8 slots used)
AMD Radeon HD 7900 with 3 monitors attached

Cons: I have so far purchased 3 and RMA'd 3 of these for a single dev system.

I have seen several reviews of this board now on various sites proclaiming the problems with memory slots, and that there should be a recall on this board.

2 of MY RMAs have been DDR memory errors, the most recent of which exposed some truly horrifying facts about ASUS RMA policies, and moving forward I will be careful about purchasing products from ASUS so be warned:

-all ASUS motherboards have a 3 year warranty (PRO)
-there are varying levels of WARRANTY on parts from ASUS (WHAT?)
-this particular board does not qualify for the "Advanced" RMA process (for $300 it should come with it's own limo driver)
-the regular RMA process is as follows
1. shipping is not covered (unless you let them know how unhappy you are with the process)
2. it may take 2 weeks or more to "repair" your motherboard or 5-7 days depending on which rep you speak with
3. if the item isn't repairable then ASUS will replace it with the same board or upgrade if not available

Obviously this is a very upsetting situation as time is more expensive than parts here

Other Thoughts: While I'm on the subject of ASUS technical support I would like to make everyone aware that I spent 4 hours on the phone troubleshooting and arguing with the clearly foreign reps who claimed to be in the Caribbean. After explaining the situation (to 7 different people and 1 supervisor who took 15 minutes to "check his policies" ) NO it doesn't qualify for the cross ship, and will be waiting 5-7 days or 2 weeks depending on which agent ou talk to for a possible repair. I then asked to speak to HIS manager, and then during the transfer process I was disconnected again.

1 out of 5 eggsWILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ASUS PRODUCT AGAIN! NOTE: 5 EGGS FOR NEWEGG AS ALWAYS, NOT THEIR FAULT!!!

Pros: fast shipping from newegg

Cons: ASUS Support is ridiculous. This board has known issues with it detecting multiple keyboards and mice when only having 1 each connected however, no bios fix for this. according to ASUS, we are just supposed to deal with it as it doesn't really affect anything. ok yes i can agree to that however the fact that this board will NOT run QVL memory at the correct speed, that I cannot just “deal with”. this board won't run PC3-14900 DDR3 1866 memory at 1866 speed. Most i'm getting is 800 yet the manual states it is compatible memory and it will run 1866 speeds. Asus answer to this is RMA the board. Ok did that, same problem with the 2nd board and I also have another system with the same board having the same issue. Ram was tested w/memtest and all pass. Asus confirms that this is also an issue with this board however they have NO fix for it, don't plan on one and will not send me a replacement either of another model board that actually does what it is advertised to do. On that note, i'm done with Asus products. If they can't support their own product when it doesn't perform to their specifications then I don't need to ever purchase another product by them again, not even a monitor!. Anyway if you plan on using 1866 memory, don’t buy this board!

Other Thoughts: No i don' recommend this product

1 out of 5 eggsDefective board out of the box

Pros: Can't say anything since i wasn't even able to make it work, looks nice thought.
Newegg told me they would send me a new one, that's a positive even though it was inconvenient to take everything apart and ship it back.

Cons: The board was defective out of the box, had to return it for an exchange.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS DRM driven motherboard

Pros: Motherboard has lasted over 3 years, easy to over clock, nice suite of options, good performance

Cons: BD Audio Layer Content Protection, also known as Cinavia, is built into the heart of this motherboard. What that means is that let's say you just bought Avengers on BluRay and archived it to your PC so you don't risk scratching the disk and can stream it to your home network for every TV in your home. With this DRM built into the mother board itself that is no longer an option with the mother board. Best part is it's not advertised anywhere on the product so you'll won't know this is the case until you've already archived your entire movie collection and come to find out you can't watch any of them now. This is even more of a problem when this system is used for VFX work for film and TV as some times I'll get delivered DRM footage that now, thanks to this mother board and it's built-in DRM that is unadvertised, I had to buy a completely new mother board just to do my job.

Other Thoughts: As soon as the new non-ASUS board arrived and was installed I no longer had any of the DRM issues I was having before. I threw the old ASUS board in trash when I found it was the problem. I have been buying/using ASUS mother boards since 1995 and have never had a complaint until now. After having run into this problem myself I will make sure that I never buy an ASUS product again.

5 out of 5 eggsOwner since 2011, long term review

Pros: I have owned this board since I build my PC in 2011. It has worked just fine and never had a major issue. I have been running my PC overclocked to between 4.4 and 4.8 GHz for this whole time without major problems. I've upgraded fans, SSD and video card in this time and never encountered any major problems. The multiple temperature sensors really help for identifying areas that are warmer and adjusting your board's cooling effectively. It also looks pretty cool.

I have never had any blue screens while running a stable overclock. ( I had some at like 5 GHz but this is expected of course)

Cons: I never could get 2133 MHz memory to run fully stable although it isn't listed in the spec here. It would run but sometimes crash so I just toned it down to around 1700 MHz and it runs better and cooler anyways.

It really doesn't have enough of the higher speed SATA ports and such if you're planning a crazy setup.

The Mosfets got kinda hot on the top of the board, see below for my fix.

Other Thoughts: Some people mentioned the VRMs getting hot (the top edge of the board) I took a cooler that was originally a slot cooler for a PCI slot on an old PC and rigged this up to fit over the fins on the heatsinks. It lowered my temperatures about 15C at max load 24/7. Been running this for about 1.5 years with no problems related to heat or other issues.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: all is up and running and what a great board. This board literately overclocks its self, and more. Lots of room for a cooler, however I used a couple of slim fans on my single loop. this would not be a problem if your case room at the top ro a double loop cooler. There is a a air cooler for the 2011 now that is made not to cover your memory lots, but if you going to over clock not been tested by me. Its a tower with one fan in between two heat sinks. Using 64 GB memory at 1866, and a 680 GPU. with 850w power supply. 4930K CPU and its very lightly overclocked. I took it up 30% and never even bother to test it for stability. teps all under 50C.

Cons: This board was replaced twice before I got it to post all my memory 64 GBs but it was working just not posting all the memory I had installed so I finally changed the board for the third time with a CPU also, cant tell you which was bad the CPU or the boards. However should be obvious now should it not.

Other Thoughts: In my frustration I gave this board a one star and that was not fair so if you see that review please ignore it. Intel was great getting me a CPU overnight and new egg too replaced the board twice without making me wait for the old board to get back to them. So other than the obvious builders night mare this was an easy glitch thanks to New egg and intel. Asus was there usual no customer support at all, shame on them.

1 out of 5 eggsworks fine til u need to rma it

Pros: decent speedy motherboard, hyperduo works like a charm
holds 64gig quad channel memory just fine.

Cons: but if u plug in a 2.1 TB hd or larger into the marvel sata 2.0 ports..the motherboard may die on u, it happened to me.
rma service is a joke, they misplaced it for 2 weeks, had "worked" on it for 2 weeks. then returned with damaged cpu socket pins and voided my 5yr warranty after 1.2yrs of usage.
they must use some sort of stamp to damage the pins cause i've seen pics of other asus returned motherboards that went thru rma back to the users with bent pins and voided warranties...they all look the same. i did a fine look into the socket area, it's not only having bent pins..it's missing a few too. i think it woulda been better if asus released a bios patch to disable problem areas instead of causing users to crash their systems and deal with rma nightmares.

general note for other buyers...look at all the reviews...both good and bad and see if u have the money to waste on this.

Other Thoughts: i just wish corsair made motherboards...at least with them u get free replacement. i was nearly broke after saving up my money to build a system i was hoping it was to last 5yrs at least.
now i had to borrow money to find an alternate brand of motherboard.(shame abit went under, their mobo's still work to this day). and why did intel have to change the 2011 socket pattern for new generation cpu's.
