5 out of 5 eggsNothing but the best when it comes from MSI

Pros: - Easy to set up
- Compatible with pretty much everything on the market in terms of 4th gen processors
- Looks very nice and makes a black and red theme computer look awesome
- build for overclocking

Cons: - I've only had one issue and that was with the usb 3.0 connector (but it was my fault or my case's fault). The cable that came with the case I used didn't fit in that well/wouldn't stay in. I think what happened is that the cable that was with my case bent one of the prongs in the motherboard to the point that it wasn't able to work. luckily I really wasn't planning to use the usb 3.0 ports on my case because I have a usb 3.0 hub and the motherboard has 4 usb 3.0 outlets in the back so I was able to just hook it up there without losing usb 3.0

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend the Z97 Gaming 5 to anyone. It is easy to set up and is build for overclocking. My computer theme was already black and red and this motherboard makes it look very nice along with my MSI GTX 980.
When I finally upgrade to Skylake or Kaby Lake + I will most definitely be looking at MSI's motherboards again.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product but make sure to read my cons to avoid pain points

Pros: Having built several custom machines over the years, overall I’m very pleased with the board. Great looking board appearance wise. Functionally the board appears to fit most anyone’s demands. Another aspect that please me is how well written the owners manual was, how well everything was labeled, the standoffs for the I/O connectors. The only minor issue I had was with the 3.0 usb connector but I cant say for sure whether it was the board or the Corsair Graphite Series 760T case connector that was the culprit. You’ll definitely want to install the USB 3.0 cable before any of your sata cables. Regardless of that issue I’d like to also say the Corsair is the best case I’ve ever used hands down & would highly recommend it to anyone. It’s expensive but totally worth every penny. Think about what a pain it is to swap cases, buy a great one up front & you’re covered in the future.

Cons: These are not really cons but only a couple potential issues to be aware of and some important points to make as they will cause you a lot of problems if you’re not careful.
If you’re considering this board for windows 7 I’d consider it a must read.

1. The boards Bio’s is pre set / configured to work with Windows 8 & beyond. If you intend to install windows 7 as I did, you MUST go into advanced settings & disable the Windows 8/8.1/10 settings entirely & especially the secure boot option and probably the MSI fast boot & regular fast boot options too. As well you MUST go into the boot settings & choose the Legacy option. As well make note that if you ever clone your OS that the bios may lose track of your OS & give you a MBR error upon boot. To fix this all you will likely have to do is go back into the bios to the bottom of boot settings
& change the Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities. The notes I made about installing windows 7 on the board should have been on a warning label attached to the board. If you try to install windows 7 with the default settings in the bios it will be pure misery. If you’ve already done so; as painful as I know it is I’d go ahead & reinstall the entire OS unless you are a super advanced user or certified pro. Even then you’ll likely find it less time consuming just to reinstall, plus it will give you better piece of mind moving fwd.
Once you get your OS completely up & running with all the programs & configurations you like, I’d highly suggest making a clone of it.

2 Make sure that all your parts are compatible with each other before you even begin & don’t buy low unrated stuff from china. Don’t be a penny wise to be pound stupid as you’ll pay with lots of your valuable time trying to diagnose a problem you wouldn’t have had if you didn’t go cheap. Pcpartpicker can help with the compatibility checks.
Even the best products usually only get 4 stars b/c of one of these two issue, ie human error.

Other Thoughts: Great board overall & as long as you heed my warnings in the Cons section you should have no problems

1 out of 5 eggspoor engineering

Pros: everything except m.2 screw

Cons: m.2 screw is inferior its a micro screw that is not long enough to catch a thread once the ssd is in place called msi they dont offer a longer screw nor do they offer the dimensions of the screw they purchased so i could to try and find a longer version so the so called tech told me to remove the washer thats pressed on well the only way to get any leverage to pull it off is the threaded rod so i did that tried to install got a quarter turn and it snapped like butter. I install MR cathlab and CT scanners for a living this is not any new field so im not some gorilla wrenching down on it with a heavy ended screwdriver i use precision screwdrivers for this small stuff.

Other Thoughts: had to order a 2nd board with rush 3 delivery to get this build done in time instead of waiting weeks or months for an rma im gonna get a full refund, on this one MSI is at fault 100% from providing inferior hardware and then detrimental advice i gotta have all my money returned have the warranty transferred to the new one anything less is unacceptable

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Features and OC's

Pros: This motherboard has great features. From the LED's that show the CPU temps, to the profiles you can save to the motherboard. One thing I really love is the ability to control fans from the BIOS.

Cons: The color scheme might put some people off. There also might not be enough fan headers if you fill up every fan slot on your case.

Other Thoughts: This is a great choice, but I do hear some static in my headphones when mooing my mouse or doing something heavy on my GPU. This may or may not be due to the motherboard. I've replaced my case, GPU, mouse, headphones, and PSU and it's still there. Odd.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: Easy to mount to case
Lot's of space

Cons: Had to get it returned for defections twice. Ended up just getting a different board. Please don't waste your time and money on this.

Other Thoughts: I would only recommend this motherboard to my enemies.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat performance

Pros: Feels like I got good value. Performs well for gaming and productivity. I've had it for a year now, and I can't imagine I'll need to replace it for a long time.

Cons: I had consistent problems with onboard network plug, and ended up buying a PCIe network card to solve this.

Other Thoughts: Definitely recommended. I'd consider the network issue barely of consequence, since it only cost $20 to get a network card, and it easily installed on this mobo.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great for 6 months

Pros: Worked great for 6 months with the i5 4690K, 32GB of RAM.

Cons: Died yesterday after 6 months of use. Will not power up/POST. Not a power supply, RAM, CPU, or video card problem either - swapped the components into an older Asus Z87-Pro and they work fine.

Other Thoughts: Going to try to RMA the board and see what happens, but this will likely be the last time I buy MSI.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks...

Pros: Seems to work as advertised. Some options are a gimmick, but an all around good mobo.

Cons: Could have been cheaper, rebate is scam-tacular

4 out of 5 eggsGood...for the most part

Pros: Had no issues booting up.
was able to OC my i5 4690k to 4.5 ghz
I like the aesthetics of the board.

Cons: Won't go into Bios 70 percent of the time no matter how hard I try
Occasionally getting crashes under full load but that might be my old 7yr old Corsair 650 watt 80 bronze that I'm replacing.

Other Thoughts: I'd probably recommend it if I could consistently get into Bios.
More on the Bios issue....I have my PC connected to my 40 inch Samsung 1080p 3DTV. It doesn't matter how or when I hit "del" key to enter Bios, 70-80 percent of the time it will just present me with a blank screen. I have scoured the entire internet to resolve this annoyance and have tried many concoctions of turning on the TV at certain points to see if it's a timing thing. Recently I got a new GPU (GTX 980 Ti) and have switched from DVI to HDMI cable and so far getting into BIOS on HDMI is impossible. It possibly comes down to a "handshake" issue between PC and monitor.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome...

Pros: My build:
In Win 707 case (black/red)
Intel CORE I5 4690K overclocked at 4.3 Ghz
MSI Z97 gaming 5
MSI GTX 960
32 Gb GSkill 2400 (red)
Corsair 750w PS
Cooler Master V8 CPU cooler (replace stock fan with rosewill red LED fan)
M-Audio 1010 I/O sound card
Rosewill 3 antenna wireless internet adapter
1 TB Samsung SSD
3 TB Seagate HDD
LG 27" monitor
M-Audio BX5a 5 " studio reference speakers
Razor keyboard
Corsair gaming mouse
10 corsair 120mm silent case fans

I use this computer for gaming the top games at max settings, but also primarily use it as a multimedia workstation running ABLETON 9 SUITE for music creation and Adobe Premier. I am SO happy with this machine. No problems at all. The audio is mind-blowingly great!!! In my profession, that's really important.

Cons: Some forgot to put a case badge/sticker in my box
