Pros: Master/slave selectability

Cons: Connector orientation, loose sata connectors

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these. Although they both worked when I tested them, I don't feel I can rely on them. The connector feels loose when plugged into a sata device. Comparing the connector to other cables or adapters that feel tighter, it can be seen that a good connector has a small bump inside which provides for a tight connection. This adapter does not have that bump. This somewhat loose fit probably contributes to other reports of "lost device". Definitely a defective design.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsWorks just fine for me

Pros: Plugged it into the back of a new DVD burner I just purchased (and the other end went to my IDE connection on my Dell desktop) and it work like a charm. I was a little hesitant to purchase this after reading the less-than-stellar reviews. But, as a good friend of mine told me -- most people who are satisfied with a product don't bother to write a review, and most people who write unfavorable reviews probably don't know what they're doing. With that said, I'll just repeat -- this item works just fine.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsI am surprised ...

Pros: Does what it says so far. Now I have to test it in an embedded system that is somewhat picky.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I am surprised someone said the interface and power connectors were on the wrong side? It is SATA on one and EIDE on the other side. With selection switch on the EIDE side where expected. Maybe they are looking for the opposite application usage?

1 out of 5 eggsBad Product

Pros: Non - Poor engineering - It is amazing that companies get away with this.
I purchased 4 of these units two each from separate distributors and all failed at one time.

Cons: Does not work - Causes read/write errors randomly.
Does not work with Master Slave operation - Only on drive on the IDE connector may be connected, hence: either master OR slave not both.

Other Thoughts: Take it off the market before others become bitter for poor engineering of a product.

Buy the SYBA SY-ADA45005 IDE to Dual SATA2 Adapter, although it slows down when you plug it directly in for the lack of a 80pin IDE cable it works with two drivers.

1 out of 5 eggsBad engineering

Pros: none

Cons: interface and power connector are on the wrong side

Other Thoughts: Extremely bad idea to design a mini board like this, but then swap the power and interface connectors from where they would normally be found on an actual PATA hard drive. This might work if I was going to put the drive in a computer, but it's a show-stopper in the small area I have available.

1 out of 5 eggsJust plain bad

Pros: It's design fits drives relatively well...

Cons: I bought 6 of these, 3 of the devices were not even able to have the ide controller detect the sata drive on the other side, of the 3 adapters that worked well enough to have the ide controllers detect the drives correctly, all received many data errors, and one simply stopped working all together after having power for a couple of minutes.

One of the adapters generated 6 CRC errors a minute over several hours on read attempts on a working drive.

Other Thoughts: Master/Slave switch might have been a good idea if the device worked at all in the correct setting.

3 out of 5 eggsSY-IDE-SATAHD

Pros: Works as advertised. When you have no other option on an IDE only MB this does the job for high capacity SATA storage solutions.

Cons: IDE port on the device is built in reverse. My Ribbon cable had no Key bump, and typical "red strip" to power rule didn't work. Flipped the cable and good to go.

BIOS saw the drive but Windows Explorer/My Computer did not. Had to use Disk Management to find the drive and then format as "Dynamic". Could not be used as a "Basic" Volume. Format took OVERNIGHT.

Other Thoughts: I like the activity LED on board and the master/slave switch seems like a no-brainer.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work

Pros: Great idea in theory if it worked!

Cons: Item did not work. BIOS recognized drive as did the OS. OS stated that it could not read device unless it was formatted. All attempts to format drive failed both from within OS and with partitioning software. SATA drive works fine in other systems and enclosures.

Other Thoughts: Moral of the story: take your chance with adapters!
