Question 1

SanDisk Extreme 8TB vs Samsung T7 Shield: which should I buy?

Accepted Answer

Choose the SanDisk Extreme 8TB if you want one portable drive with 8TB of capacity. Choose the Samsung T7 Shield if up to 4TB is enough and you prefer Samsung’s rugged USB 3.2 Gen 2 option. Their advertised speeds are similar: up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write. Actual transfer speeds depend on the host device and connection.

Question 2

Should I get the SanDisk Extreme 8TB or the SanDisk Extreme PRO with USB4?

Accepted Answer

Choose the Extreme 8TB when storage capacity is the priority: it offers 8TB and up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write. Choose the Extreme PRO with USB4 when faster transfers matter more and your device supports USB4; its rated speeds are up to 3,800MB/s read and 3,700MB/s write, and SanDisk lists 2TB and 4TB capacities. The product being compared here is officially named SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, not Extreme PRO.

Question 3

Is the SanDisk Extreme 8TB worth it over the 4TB version?

Accepted Answer

Choose the 4TB version if that capacity covers your files; SanDisk lists the same USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface and up to 1,000MB/s write speed for both capacities. Choose the 8TB version if you need twice the storage in one drive. The capacity upgrade does not raise the advertised speed tier.

Question 4

Is this a good portable drive for travel and large photo or video files?

Accepted Answer

It is suited to carrying and storing large files while traveling: it weighs 52 g, has a carabiner loop, offers up to 1050 MB/s read and 1000 MB/s write speeds, and is rated for up to 3-meter drop protection with IP65 water and dust resistance. IP65 does not mean it can be submerged. Actual transfer speeds depend on the connected device and USB port.

Question 5

Can I connect this SSD directly to a phone or tablet?

Accepted Answer

It is listed as compatible with USB-C phones and tablets running iOS 13+ or Android 11+. Direct use also depends on whether the device supports external storage. The included cables are USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A; a Lightning iPhone is not listed as a direct connection option.

Question 6

Can I use the drive with both a Mac and a Windows PC?

Accepted Answer

The listed system requirements include Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.13 or later. If you plan to move files between both systems, check the drive’s file system first; Best Buy Q&A notes that exFAT is suitable for cross-platform use. Formatting can erase existing files.

Question 7

Can I use this external SSD with a PS5?

Accepted Answer

Best Buy’s Q&A for the 8TB model says it can store PS5 and PS4 games; PS4 games can run from the external drive, but PS5 games must be moved to the console’s internal storage to play. Treat it as external storage, not as a way to play PS5 games directly from the drive.

Question 8

Is the SanDisk Extreme 8TB worth buying if I need a lot of portable storage?

Accepted Answer

It may suit buyers who specifically need up to 8TB in a portable USB-C drive. The listed maximum speeds are 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, but a Reddit discussion cautions against paying for 8TB when 1–2TB would meet the need. Compare the capacity and price with your actual storage requirements.

Question 9

Should I use this SSD as the only copy of important files?

Accepted Answer

No. Community discussions include reports of SanDisk Extreme drives disconnecting or becoming inaccessible, though those reports involve different capacities and do not establish how often the 8TB model fails. Keep another copy of important files; the listed five-year limited warranty is not a substitute for a data backup.

Question 10

Will it work reliably with a phone or tablet?

Accepted Answer

The product information lists USB-C device compatibility and support for iOS 13+ and Android 11+. However, Reddit users have reported disconnections with other-capacity Extreme drives connected to phones. Compatibility does not guarantee stable operation with every device, so check your device’s USB-C support and test transfers before relying on it.

Question 11

Is it suitable for travel and outdoor use?

Accepted Answer

Its 52 g listed weight, carabiner loop, IP65 rating, and stated protection against drops up to three meters make it portable and designed for some exposure to dust, water, and impacts. Those ratings do not make it indestructible; protect it and keep important files backed up. A YouTube review also raises size and durability as decision considerations.
