Always on, NEVER sleeps, constant deep hum. 12/31/2019 9:05:26 AM

Pros: compact. lots of features. m.2 cache slots. fast

Cons: Always on, never sleeps when used with 8TB WD RED NAS drives. only 1 USB3 out, only compatible with very specific high speed RAM

Overall Review: I love just about everything about this NAS except for the low deep 24/7 hum it produces and its inability to spin disks down in time of network inactivity. The option in the software is there but the NAS is not responding and the 3 8TB WD Red drives are spinning at full speed 24/7 without EVER spinning down. I am no expert but this behaviour does not seem desirable for a unit that's advertised as an environmentally friendly "green" solution. People on some forums say this is normal for always NAS with actually NAS drives but I am not convinced. The NAS produces a constant low hum and the vibrations travel into my walls from the basement and i have it on a very solid platform. When i bring the NAS to my office and connect it to the network there, drives spin down as expected. When it's on my home network it's alwas on - all drives 24/7 at highest speed. There is obviously some software/network issue and it's beyond my ability to figure this one out. People on the forum are divided on the always-on" with majority saying "always-on" is more desirable for extending drive life. Still, shouldn't the NAS be able to spin the drives down when the option is selected? I tried everything - shutting down all internet activity, apps, and the plex server. i have nothing else installed. i even removed the m.2 drive to see if it makes a difference (some people suggested there is a bug that prevents the drives from spinning down when m.2 is installed) still no spin down on my home network. It's frustrating me somewhat but other than that everything is working well. I loaded it with max 8GB of RAM and i have 1 m.2 1tb stick for cache. 2 disks are configured for RAID 1 and one is a standalone static volume for streaming media.
