Works well and plays movies if you have software 6/8/2020 2:07:35 AM

Pros: - More silent than my 12.5mm slim blue ray drive
- Reads content smoothly
- Holds disc securely
- Very small size

Cons: - Does not open without being powered
- No DVD or blue-ray software included
- Can be a bit loud when first powered on
- included cable to connect to PC (Windows 10) is only 18" in length, luckily longer cables can be purchased.

Overall Review: Works as intended, just keep in mind to play movies software will have to be downloaded which can be found for cheap or free but good software does cost extra. If price isn't and issue and are willing to spend extra on software to play movies and to burn discs this has been good for read discs and playing movies... I do not burn CDs so can not express any experience.

Great Optical Solution 5/21/2020 4:09:38 PM

Pros: -Very small
-Relatively quiet
-Good ergonomics

Cons: -Just a small thing, but the power and read/write activity indicators are the same blue LED. Sometimes it's hard to tell if the drive has a disc and is active or if it's just idle or empty but powered on. Separate LED's or different color elements would be nice; blue for power, green for activity, for example.

Overall Review: I just built a PC to replace my 9-year-old Dell. That last computer had an internal optical drive that I still used occasionally (e.g. currently ripping my DVDs & Blurays since I've had discs go bad in the past). I went with external because it would be more flexible to use with a laptop if necessary and it would be one less thing to reinstall if I built another PC in the future. I was very surprised how small the drive was. It's about the same size as 2 CD cases stacked, even a little shorter one direction! It's also pretty quiet. Yes, at high-speed read/write jobs you can hear it but nothing out of the ordinary. It's quieter than my old internal drive and very stable; very little vibration. For longer, slower jobs like ripping a Bluray or playing a disc real-time, it's basically silent. I really appreciate the top-load since I set this on top of my PC that sits next to me under my desk and is easier to use there than a front-load tray. And they designed the lid very well; it's spring assisted and lifts with the gentlest touch. This is really nice because the drive is so small and light, if it were not so easy to open you'd have to hold it with both hands to keep it from moving around while you handle it. Instead it's easy to do with one hand. USB 3.0 transfer speeds are very good for these kinds of jobs.

Well, we use optical drives less and less as time goes by but Pioneer has a really solid solution here while there is still a need.

Great external Blu-Ray optical drive, but NOT a Blu-Ray "player"! 5/14/2020 7:02:05 PM

Pros: 1. Very fast read speeds (no plans to use as a burner)
2. Safe, top-loading mechanics with both an electronic "Open" button and a manual release (when powered off)
3. Tested on Linux (Debian 5.4 kernel), macOS (Mojave), and Windows (10 Home): works with ALL 3 out of the box

Cons: 1. Not a consumer Blu-Ray player; comes with neither the codecs nor the key database for playing consumer Blu-Ray movies
2. No operating systems come with a built-in player which can play Blu-Ray movies
2.1. VLC is the best option (i.e. most trustworthy) I found to play consumer Blu-Ray movies, but requires additional files, libraries, and steps; to play consumer Blu-Ray movies with less than 100% success rate and features
2.1.1. I have only used VLC to play Blu-Ray movies in Linux and macOS: macOS version is missing the option to "disable disc menus", which results in FEWER compatible discs (i.e. it's better on Linux)

Overall Review: If you are looking for an easy way to play consumer Blu-Ray movies through your computer, this is not it. There may be trustworthy software players (for purchase), but I was quite disappointed that no software or key database is supplied by the manufacturer. There are many consumer BD/DVD/CD players in this price-range, which will play EVERY consumer disc made for those 3 formats, in the user's region. I do not believe that the ability to WRITE BD/DVD/CD media makes up for no (built-in) way to PLAY consumer BD movies.

If, however, you do not mind a bit of a chore to get started... and occasional disappointment when a BD movie is not compatible with VLC... this is a very good option. It works with MOST (>90%; no BD+ movies work) of my BD movies on Linux... with VLC + KeyDB.cfg + libbluray2. But, it works with only 68% of my BD movies on macOS... with VLC + KeyDB.cfg + other add-ons (cannot recall).

I do not know the BD movie compatibility percentage on Windows. Linux is my primary OS on PC. I only keep Windows installed for rare use cases (e.g. wireless display mirroring to devices not recognized by Linux or running native Windows applications).

Great Product! Easy to Setup and Use! 3/10/2020 5:42:15 PM

Overall Review: The product works, and is fairly simple and straightforward to use. Do note that you will need a video software that has a codec pack to view most Blu-Ray movies that are commercially available.
