Pros: Solid build Handsome, low glare screen Looks professional Wide compatibility
Cons: Heavy heavy heavy Difficult to open Heavy Attention to detail lacking Did I mention this thing is heavy?
Overall Review: This thing is massive; it's pretty, and it's a great concept, but the execution is lacking for the asking price. I dropped my new 'Days of Play' PS4 slim into this rig as soon as I got it out of the box and wrestled it open. The way the latches are designed you want to open this like you would a nice briefcase, thumbs on the buttons and hands wrapped around the corners to lift. That doesn't work because what you try to lift with your fingers is the bottom half. Realistically this thing would take 3 hands to open in 1 swift move: you have to lift on the carry handle and pop one of the latches, then pop the other while continuing to lift the handle. This was not a great first impression. I verified all the accessories were included, looked at the quick-reference sheet, pulled the thumb screws to release the (plastic) console cover. There are heavy duty rubber bumpers which are molded with ridges for each compatible system (a very nice touch) and each ridge is actually labeled for the specific system so you know where to seat them (a nicer touch). These bumpers aren't permanently mounted, but press-fit over nodes in the bast of the rig, mine were not seated properly, likely due to shipping, but they were simple enough to reinstall. A bit of double-sided tape or similar would be a nice touch. Two L-connector HDMI cables are provided (left and right) which didn't make much sense to me as all the consoles have correctly oriented HDMI connectors and the input for the screen is on the right rear corner of the base, but still appreciated. The connector you want to use for PS4 systems is actually just a touch too long so some routing is required. An A to A USB cable is provided as well, however both ends use straight connectors which causes a problem with most systems as it makes them difficult to install and route from the rear end of certain consoles, and in the case of the PS4 Slim, means it's not long enough to reach the input above the HDMI input. Luckily I already had a USB 3.0 L-extension which I was able to add in. An L-shaped IEC C13/C14 extension is provided for older PS4 Pro console power input. Documentation with the rig shows a wall-wart style power supply for screen, however the included psu is a brick, laptop style, with a 3-prong AC plug routing to an IEC C5 connector which plugs into the converter brick. This was one of the first details that were missed. The next was the 'carrier' for the controller - the rubber bumper which protects the controller from rubbing against the plastic base was not properly glued into place. This was an easy fix, but another straw on the pile. In the same place, the hook and loops straps which hold the controller in place, which are *supposed* to be sewn around the plastic loops were unfortunately loose - they were sewn closed, but there was obviously a design flaw or miscommunication which resulted in an inability to install this strap correctly. This cannot be fixed with the existing materials. Even if it could be, when taut, the strap will press on the 'PS' button causing the controller to try to wake the unplugged system. Can't imagine what this will do to the battery on an hours-long flight... After putting everything in place, I tightened the straps which lock the console in place a la previous Gaems systems and put the console cover back in place, plugged in the power and fired everything up. A blue LED glow illuminates a border around the HDMI/USB/Audio inputs. The power button's red LED comes to life in blue , and the pass-through USB ports light up. The screen comes to life quickly, is of decent quality but without any sort of adjustment or calibration seems a bit muted color-wise. Speakers are crisp and clear, and while by no means audiophile quality, they'll certain do for just about any game where fine listening isn't a priority (like FPS games where you may be listening for footsteps or rustling). Sound is not tinny but may sound a little 'hollow' to some ears, almost as though you were playing a boombox inside a cave. Better than expected considering the size of the speakers and their enclosures. I'm in my office not 30' from my wifi router, my PC and other wifi devices show full signal but this PS4 is having trouble connecting - I'm not certain if this is a problem with the PS4 as I previously had it connected via ethernet, or if the Gaems rig is somehow interfering with the the wifi signal; will have to test further. I'm running out of letters and I have only used it for a few minutes; I'll update after some use.
