So far a bust 11/8/2019 6:01:46 PM

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Doesn’t worn

Overall Review: Out of the box couldn’t get my PC to recognize this drive using SATA cable that worked great for other drives

Called the manufacturer who offered to replace it with a refurbished model [sic!]. After further negotiating they promised to send a new one.

Hope that works better

Seagate's quality has dropped in recent years 10/28/2019 1:53:18 AM

Pros: Drive is low cost and would seem good on paper

Cons: Seagate has reduced there warranty from 5 years to 1 in response to there low quality products

Overall Review: I was purchasing Seatate hard drives when their name was Shugart back in the 80's and was a loyal customer then their barracuda drive line which was plagued with failures and in response to this Seagate reduced their warranty from 5 years to 1. I won't say which drive manufacture I switched to because I not advertising but I will never buy another Seagate product after all the lost data and failed drives from Seagate.

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THESE DRIVES..!!!!!!!!!!!! 10/26/2019 6:27:06 AM

Pros: Large capacity is the pro of these drives

Cons: Purchased (12) 10TB HDD in one year. Have them in a freenas server system. 6 Drive with bad sectors. Replaced one through Seagates program, given a refurbished drive. I also use two drives as hotspare and one spare as redundant drive. Thankfully i used hotspares other wise my data would be gone. These drives all have problems with bad read write sectors. For the money i spent should have paid a little more and got WD Drives reds. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THESE DRIVES...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall Review: I never go with seagate drives over the years, now years later after using these drives i know why.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Andrew,

We regret to hear about your experience with the Seagate IronWolf. From what we understand, the cache on these drives are disabled by Synology DSM making them slow. We can empathize with your frustration, and we're hoping to lend a helping hand and offer some assistance which may resolve the issue.

Transfer speeds can be affected and be directly impacted by various factors. For example, such factors include:
- File type
- Size of file
- Port versions
- Services enabled
- Computer configurations
- Programs running in the background

We mention these factors as a manner of suggesting the variables that can affect transfer speed. We would suggest you consider such factors and see what may be applicable. This can explain possible performance issues.

If you were not able to find a resolution with the troubleshooting steps listed above, we’d like the opportunity to carefully review your concerns and work towards a resolve for you. Please request to speak with a Seagate expert by phone or email with the link below, so we can further investigate and explore the available options: https://support2.seagate.com/?language=en-us

Kind Regards,
Matt

IronWolf 8TB NAS Drives - work as expected 10/17/2019 7:22:51 PM

Pros: Installed easy - Quite.

Cons: Holes for my hard drive bays were missing. Perhaps they are drilled for other cases. I'm using them in a regular computer case (Thermaltake View 91) as a RAID.

Overall Review: They are hard drives which I bought on a 40% sale. I've been lucky with hard drives and my luck continues with this pair.

Storage for my QNAP NAS (8 drives) 10/12/2019 7:15:37 PM

Pros: Great value size vs price, good warranty, easy to setup, fairly quiet.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: Bought 10 x 6TB drives to go into my QNAP 8 Drives NAS (8 installed + 2 spares).
OS drives (1 & 2) are configured as mirror and Data drives (3 to 8) are configured as RAID 6.
All drives were formatted (EXT4), tested and worked perfectly, none were DOA.

A Blackhole of Data Storage 10/12/2019 6:28:23 AM

Pros: Obviously a substantial amount of storage. Large cache at 256MB with a 7,200 RPM spindle speed which both contribute to impressive performance.

Drive runs cool even after hours, upon hours, of consecutively writing terabytes of data to it; drive is now half full. I monitored the drive temperature through my Zyxel NAS326 web portal and the drive never exceeded 43C/109F; Seagate lists max operating temp at 60C. The Zyxel NAS326 does have a small fan in it, but it is absolutely silent while providing only a light breeze to expel hot air from within the NAS enclosure.

With how cool and stable the drive performed, it is not surprising it has a MTBF (mean time between failure) rating of 1 million hours along with an endurance rating of 180TB to be written per year. That endurance rating means you could write the drives entire (formatted) capacity to it nearly 14 times a year...and it's anticipated to not fail!

Latest firmware installed on the drive.

Impressive sequential read/write speeds for a platter drive. ~260 MB/s read/write in my Ryzen 2700X system. This is a fair margin faster than my 6TB WD Black which only manages 175 read & 195 write; in the same system. This also exceeds Seagates claim of 210 MB/s

Outstanding performance of the drive seems to be slightly bottlenecked by my entry-level Zyxel NAS326 enclosure. Gigabit Ethernet max theoretical throughput is ~125 MB/s and writing large (1GB-20GB) video files to the drive via the NAS held an extremely steady 80 MB/s. Using Zyxel web portal to download files from the NAS gives a slightly better result in the mid-80 to low 90 MB/s. Writing many small files (photos) to the drive obviously takes a performance hit, but it still did well often fluctuating between 15-30 MB/s. Considering the little $99 NAS is powered by a mere Marvell single-core Armada 38X 88F6810-A0, the performance is pretty decent IMO.

Seagate has added rotational vibration sensors in case you will be operating these drives in larger NAS enclosures up to a total of 8. The IronWolf Pro take this quite a bit further with guaranteed performance up to 24 drives in a single system.

Rescue Data Recovery services directly through Seagate are an optional addition to the drive; see cons.

Cons: I wanted to figure out how much it would cost for the Rescue Data Recovery which requires registration of the drive. For whatever reason, I am unable to register the drive on Seagate's website due to an invalid serial number. I tried the serial number on the drive label and this doesn't work. I tried using a QR reader as instructed by Seagate's site. I removed the drive from the NAS and used Seagate's DriveDetect.exe program which gave me the same serial number that is on the label. Not sure what I could be doing wrong.

Overall Review: Prior to receiving this drive, the largest I had were a 6TB Toshiba & a 6TB WD. At first the drive seemed a little on the louder end of the spectrum while writing to it. My brother happened to be over during the initial large file transfer and he said his 12TB WD Gold sounds very similar. I suppose this is a phenomenon experienced with high capacity helium filled drives? The noise isn't that intrusive, just louder than what I have come accustomed to. The drive is currently residing in the aforementioned Zyxel NAS326 on my living room entertainment center. I demand very quiet, if not silent operation, and it fits that bill just fine.

If you have older external enclosures, docks or potentially even your router..you may issues with a drive of this capacity. I had an Anker/UCTech 6618SUS3 HDD dock, which is quite dated, and would not recognize the drive due to capacity. My initial plan was to use the dock to attach to my router to setup a NAS. I then went and purchased a Vantec NST-400MX-S3R dual bay external enclosure. This time the enclosure worked to recognize the drive for normal functionality, but I ran into issue with my Linksys EA7500 router; I've had that router since 04/16. The only way I could get it to function with this size drive was with an FTP server...which is way less than ideal. It could detect the drive, but stated there was an issue with formatting of the drive. My brother and I tried NTFS, GPT and even Linux's EXT format to no avail. Purchasing the Zyxel NAS326 and connecting to the EA7500 via ethernet was the final solution.

I grabbed new HDD dock, the Nexstar TX NST-D328S3-BK for $20. Despite Vantec's site only stating compatibility with up 10TB drives, it works fine with this 14TB model.

I anticipate the drive to last me quite some given how it has done thus far.

2 DOA drives out of 4 ordered... 10/11/2019 11:38:21 AM

Pros: 50% of the drives I ordered worked...?

Cons: Ordered 4 of these drives and 2 were DOA. The two bad drives buzz every 5 seconds and don't spin up. Getting two replacements but I don't have much faith with their track record right out of the gate.

Overall Review: Bottom line - I do not recommend these drives. In this day and age there is no excuse for such poor QC. I'll go back to WD drives again.
