Dumbfounded 9/22/2018 9:12:25 AM

Pros: I'm running a Synology DS1511+ and was just looking to see how my drives were doing. I've had this guy in place since I bought it in June of 2011. I bought 5 of these Seagate drives to put in it and of the 5 of them, 4 are still going strong. I lost 1 of them back in 2014, but the other 4 are STILL going strong. I'm sure I'm going to jinx myself by posting this, but was surprised to see that these were still running and went to my order history to determine for sure when I bought these...yikes. I can't believe these drives have been running solid for the last 7 years.

Cons: uh, none?

Overall Review: I wish I had advice on which drives to buy today. Clearly these Seagate drives were excellent purchases in 2011.

almost 5 years running 3/21/2016 12:07:38 PM

Pros: -Tons of space
-Reliable (Running 24/7 for almost 5 years and no trouble)
-Good speed (7200RPM)

Cons: -The first time I used it, the hard drive suddenly disconnected on a data transfer a a read error appeared. After a 0 fill the error disappeared and have been running good ever since.

Overall Review: Go for it.

no problems for now! 9/23/2013 4:43:32 AM

Pros: upgraded from a western digital caviar black 1tb drive.
that drive was great btw-- 4 years old and going like a champ. Just ran out of space.

This drive is faster, too-- however that may be entirely from the fact that a full drive, is a slow drive. And I had about 30gb left on that 1tb drive.

Purchased used off an internet auction house (apparently the name is an 'inappropriate word,' lol. Fingers crossed, so far it's quiet and installed without issue

Cons: Not really a con. Read on.
Showed up as 746.xx gb at first. Big problem.
I knew that old computers might only read 2.2/3tb because of bios software, but I have a new computer, and it was only reading 746!
Looked online, only found several frantic and frustrated forum posts from years past. I notice some reviews here as well.
The bios saw the full 3tb...
But windows disk management could not be coaxed no matter what. It was giving me all kinds of trouble, initially not wanting to format, then only wanting to format the 746 space....

But guess what?
Doubtfully tried seagates disk wizard, used it to set up the hard drive, don't even remember what now-- it was just a click or two, nothing complicated, and disk management was suddenly able to see 2.7x terabytes, and format it properly. 6 hours later (did the full format to be safe), it was ready to use. 2 hrs after that I'd transferred all 1tb of my old drive on to it.

A refreshing feeling to have a company's bundled software, work exactly as intended, with absolutely no troubleshooting, errors, or stress.
Oh! And the clone software seems to work too!
I was really peeved when samsung's ssd 'included' software... only to find that on the cd, was a link to norton's website, and an invitation to purchase their ghost software. bundled software my a$%, samsung :) I can't remember but there was some other piece of hardware that I had a similar experience with... the included software was not included at all, but merely a link to a pay site!

discwizard is free and seems to have worked just fine, in getting the seagate drive to work as intended with zero fuss, and in successfully cloning my boot drive, including boot files! (i'd had trouble with that in the past-- only possibly the software's fault though).

Overall Review: will post back here in a few months to think of it, to confirm that all's well. will post sooner if all is not... fingers crossed! Just installed this last friday then went camping... doing an error check now just to take a pulse.

for absolutely every drive of every make there are so many bad reviews, doa's, and scarier, sudden deaths just months later when you're feeling safe. I really wish someone would just make an excellent, reliable drive, and not focus on anything else. It could be slower-- I have an ssd, it could be smaller, I could just buy 2 of them to put in the tower, and it could be $300-- but if I KNEW it would never fail in 8 years, I'd be happy to pay for the peace of mind.
so far though, i've just been lucky. not in my (admittedly limited) computing life have I personally had a dead drive. still concerned for the future however.

Dissapointing 11/9/2012 12:47:26 PM

Pros: Lots of storage and fairly fast data transfer if you have it on a 6Gb/s header.

Cons: Life span was extremely short. I had this drive for a few months and nearly had it full up to around 2.8TB and it died. No way to retrieve the data that was on the disk.

Overall Review: After the failure I have switched to the 3TB Western Digital Green. Although it has the intelliPower technology it takes a bit of time for the drive to spin up. But I believe this will help in the longevity of the drive.

Don't buy these drives 1/14/2012 2:51:58 PM

Pros: Drives are large.

Cons: Now I have never written a review before and find I just have to this time. I won't call this a review of sorts, but a gripe. I bought 5 of these before the flooding happened for $159. To date I have just had my second drive fail. I have to pay $10 evertime one of these dies to either get an advanced replacement or more to send it back in advance since I don't get the large company shipping discounts. Then you get a refurb unit. First one failed a week after having it and the second now about 2 months later. These drives are really poor quality. Not what I was expecting from Seagate. Would definitely recommend even if you like Seagate not buying them.

Works, What Else Do You Want 1/6/2012 4:25:38 PM

Pros: Tons of space.

Great performance.

It worked out of the box.

Cons: Dealing with the 3tb size can be difficult. I couldn't get mine into a single disk letter but, thats my fault.

You will have trouble installing Win7 on this on a new build. I just installed on another drive then mirrored it over.

Will not buy again either... 1/5/2012 6:30:47 AM

Pros: Large in size.

Cons: 1 in 4 died a few months after buying them, the whole time it would randomly drop from the array. Very annoying, having to rebuild 12tb takes days.

None of my BIOSes recognized them, I had to buy an Adaptec RAID card, which I would have done anyways.

Putting it in a USB drive and giving to my friend doesn't work, and neither does taking it out and giving it to a friend, it will want to reformat for some reason. So don't get it for large data swaps either.

Plus they are pretty noisy.

Overall Review: I got 4 of them in a media center case attached to an Adaptec 6805 in RAID 5. They are pretty noisy in just spin mode, they cause a lot of vibration. Reading is pretty quiet, except for the dead one. Average about 80mbps per drive on the inside of the platter, about 500-700MBps with 4 in RAID5. The whole annoyance of their troubles has left me sour with Seagate, meanwhile my WD RE2 have been running for 5 years no problem.
