ASUS TUF Gaming Z490-Plus with WI-FI 9/16/2020 11:57:35 AM

Pros: Works very well.

Cons: Some connections are a little hard to reach such as the fan connectors and the front panel connections. My fingers had a hard time pushing them down.
Scared me the first time I booted as it couldn't find a boot drive.

Overall Review: I am very please with this motherboard. I replaced an almost ten-year old Intel motherboard and didn't have any major problems (except missed connecting my CD/DVD rom drives to the power supply).
When I turned it on it scared me as it couldn't find a boot drive. Turns out you have to set the default boot method to legacy bios rather than UEFI in the bios setting to get it to recognize the boot drive. This is required if you are using an existing drive that is configured using legacy bios. I don't think this would be a problem if you are building a new computer and are using a brand new drive. The instructions could have provided more information on this. They are pretty much all pictures and don't go into a lot of detail on the difference. Once I had figured this out, the computer booted right up.
Also, there is a bios update on the ASUS website but when I try to install it, it says that it's not applicable to my motherboard. I haven't figured out what's going on with that.

4.5/5.0 Great MoBo With Wi-Fi Capability 9/1/2020 2:37:40 PM

Pros: - Has Wi-Fi and an antenna just in case you are not guaranteed to have Ethernet LAN
- Has a USB-C header
- Heatsink for M.2 NVMe SSD
- Supports my i7-10700K Comet Lake
- Cool I/O shield with TUF Gaming logo
- USB-C port and DisplayPort 1.4
- A couple of subtle RGB strips

Cons: - Really wish this had a second USB 2.0 header, which is why I would rather rate this at 4.5 eggs
- Only supports PCIe3, but I understand PCIe4 Mobos don't really come out until Rocket Lake is launched (pun definitely intended)

Overall Review: - Fantastic MoBo that felt very durable when installing
- Unfortunately, the sole USB 2.0 header was taken by my front panel, so I had to find a micro USB to USB-A cable for my Corsair h115i Pro, remove a PCIe cover on my case, and plug it into the I/O shield on the MoBo
- This MoBo had everything I wanted (Wi-Fi, USB-C header and port, Z490 chipset, 4 RAM slots, M.2 NVMe heatsink, good price point) except for a second USB 2.0 header

6 weeks of troubleshooting and still no reliability 8/21/2020 8:19:38 PM

Pros: Board build quality looks and feels good. All the peripherals you'd expect to find. The Wi-Fi is a nice backup if ethernet access is an issue. When the board works, it works well; first power on was fast, the UEFI BIOS has all the features you'd want, and the system is set to go for overclocking if that is your desire.

Cons: I've gone through 3 video cards with this system, and I still continue to get GPU no boot situations. BIOS flashes, part by part breakdowns of the system, replacement GPUs, and nothing improves.

Through resetting the CMOS, and multiple attempts at power-on eventually the system will fully boot and operate normally until the next shutdown. ASUS support has been less than helpful, and they're hard to reach.

Overall Review: I've bought ASUS motherboards exclusively for more years now than I want to consider, but the length of issue with this board and trying to get ahold of meaningful support has been tiresome. I'm sure if the board didn't work at all, support would be have been quick; having a system that occasionally works seems to knock down the importance of the assistance. For full disclosure, this is happening during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, which likely has made support harder to get ahold of than usual.

Great Product So Far 8/9/2020 11:13:54 PM

Pros: - OC to 5GHz did 100% stress test no issues.
- OC is VERY easy, you can just press DEL on startup, and choose "normal" "fast" or "extreme" You also have the option to do everything manually. I like the BIOS layout, easy to control and understand.
- Board layout seems mostly good, cable management was very easy, plenty of room for CPU coolers, it feels like thought went into the design.
- Instruction manual is clear and has a good table of contents.

Cons: Only con I can find is that possibly the 2nd M.2 slot isn't in a great place. Its above the GPU and below the CPU (tower config) so it might get hot? I can't say, as I only have the 1st M.2 slot occupied.

Overall Review: I have been running my new build with the ASUS TUF Gaming Z490 Plus WI-FI with a 10700k for a week now with no issues. I overclocked the CPU to 5 GHz and have not gone above 60C once in gaming and with AIDA 64 100% stress for 60 mins the hottest the CPU got was 76C and had full stability. I am a novice PC builder, I do it once every 4-5 years, and forget a lot in that time. The MB layout made cabling easy, everything snapped right into place, and the included instructions were clear. The MB felt sturdy to me. I read the more expensive boards can have better audio and more stable OC but I am having no issues... but to be fair, it's been a week.

Let me address some comments here: 1) WifI works perfectly for me, it's up instantly after computer sleep... that is either an isolated issue or use issue. 2) This MB does not have annoying LEDs... 2 small LEDs on the right side, not sure how that can annoy you unless you sleep looking into your computer case. WIFI did not connect out of the box as another user mentioned, but it was no issue for me to download the driver on my laptop and install it with a portable HD I had. You won't get an install screen, a little box just quickly flashed onscreen after clicking setup then all WIFI in rnage just popped up in Windows 10 lower right.

TLDR: If all you want is one good NVidia GPU and an overclocked CPU with WIFI this board nails it, no need to spend more even if you have the spare cash.

Solid Board, layout might could use some tweaks. 7/27/2020 9:11:17 AM

Pros: Works as intended, solid offering and great price.

Cons: I want to preface my comments by saying, I build a new system about every five years. I might tinker around in the meantime helping others so I'm not doing this work consistently enough to dodge what might be common pitfalls to those building new PCs more frequently.

My gripe:
I bought this board, a Noctua NH-D15 and a CoolerMaster Masterbox TD 500. The layout of the board makes using the optional Noctua NH-D15 fan impossible.

There's plenty of blame to go around here so not sure who it should fall on. You could blame Asus for the heatshield over the backplate components, or the proximity of the Ram to CPU, but you could also blame CoolerMaster for the depth of the case or maybe Noctua.

That said, it all fits as long as you don't include the optional Noctua fan, just using the primary. System temps are fine as well with just the single fan and the massive heatsink.

Overall Review: I'd buy again, but I'd give a lot of thought to what case I was putting it in given my desire not to watercool.
