A key application of plastic optical fiber (POF) is in digital audio jumpers. In 1987, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) established the standard for digital audio jumpers. Over short distances (typically within 5 meters), POF enables signal transmission at 6Mbps between amplifiers and built-in digital-to-analog converters, as well as digital audio devices such as CD/MD/DAT players and BS tuners. POF is immune to electrical noise, helping deliver high-quality sound.

TOSLINK (Toshiba Link) is a standardized optical digital audio interface widely adopted by Japanese manufacturers on CD players and MD players. It transmits digital audio signals (stereo or multi-channel) between various audio components using light as the transmission medium through an optical conductor.

TOSLINK jumpers typically use PMMA-core plastic optical fiber with a standard diameter of 1.0mm and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5. The cable jacket is made of flame-retardant PVC, available in colors such as black, red, and blue. Common outer diameters include 2.2mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm, and 6.0mm. Jumper lengths are generally less than 10 meters.
