Good Product, Despite Foolish Reviews5/28/2010 12:55:01 AM
Pros: Lots of nice features for a board this inexpensive. I was suprised to see SATA III and USB 3.0 on this board when a lot of more expensive boards as yet do not have them. If you are looking for a rock solid low cost AM3 board, look no further. Oh, and for the guy who had to make two reviews bemoaning the lack of "AM3" support... dude, you should not be allowed anywhere near electronic devices. Nuff said.
Cons: No cons, at this price. My one gripe with MSI is the lack of MSI stickers with their mainboards. :( I have three MSI mainboards currently and exactly 0 stickers. If anyone from MSI is reading, a sticker would be nice for sillly fanboys like me that like to put them on the computer case. :)
Overall Review: I build (and own) a lot of gaming computers. I currently have three gaming rigs running in my apartment (two AMD Phenom X4 and one Intel i7) and all of them are running on MSI mainboards. This is unusual for me, because I like to mix up the manufacturers I buy from so I am always trying different brands. The fact is, for the very competitive price and the awesome list of features, all three MSI boards (all different models) were really the best option I could find. I am extremely pleased with all three models of MSI mainboards, and all have been running problem free since installation. The one feature missing from this board that I would add if I could are the diagnostic LEDs that are on my MSI 790FX-GD70. I know the 790FX is a much higher end board than this one, hence I don't knock any eggs off for missing the feature. BUT, I think every mainboard should have this feature. It has helped me to identify problems during POST several times (invaluable tool for builders!).
Overall Review: Disregard the garbage about "not able to overclock". If you go into the cell menu in bios and change the FSB:DRAM ration, voltage and latency settings you will successfully post and load your OS with your RAM @ 1600MHz.
I know this because that is exactly what I did last night. If you've never overclocked before then please visit a forum.
Find the correct latency timings and voltage for your RAM, set it manually in the BIOS. Also set to 2T timing and DRAM timing mode to "both"
For the Price, Doesn't get any Better8/10/2010 10:00:47 AM
Pros: BANG, Right out of the box. Just drop in your favorite AMD chip, a couple sticks of ram, hook up a drive, and your up and overclocking in no time. The board recognized all of my hardware. Didn't have to set timings for the ram. Recognized it was DDR3 1600 right off the bat. This board replaced my ageless Gigabyte socket 939 Nforce4 Ultra. And I thought that one was easy to install.
Cons: Doesn't cook or bring me dinner, or serve me drinks, or clean my house.
Does Newegg sell maids??????? Could use a couple.
Overall Review: To all of the people who complain and cry about every little detail, You all are lucky. Gone are the days of having to set jumpers for every piece of hardware, and for software to. Countless hours studying all of the jumper settings to make sure you have it ready to install the O/S. If you dropped a jumper and lost it you were on your knee's looking for hours for those little things, because they didn't ship extras.
So quit b___ching about the little stuff and give real reviews on products. READ up on the stuff you want to by, not just here but other sites as well.
MSI-870A G45
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black
4 gb's A-Data DDR3 1600 g
MSI Twin Frozr GeForce GTS 250 1gb
2 WD VelociRaptor's Raid 0
Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
Pros: fast-easy install-low cost-lots of features!
Cons: had to pay tax because I live in tennessee :(
Overall Review: Saw a lot of brutal reviews on this board but I decided to try it any way. My last 3 or 4 boards have been ASUS and I can say this was MUCH easier to get up and running and a lot less gremlins and ghost to work out upon initial set-up.
Board performs exactly as I expected.12/9/2010 11:25:43 AM
Pros: Worked out of the box. Bios detected everything correctly. G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600, Phenom II X6 1055T, Radeon 5450, my old Firewire, Wireless NIC, and Video Cap PCI cards all work with this board.
No special tricks needed to install windows. Drivers installed easily after windows was installed.
The inside of my computer is now blacker than the inside of Hotblack Desiato's Spaceship. I've got a case window and I think the new equipment looks nice in there.
Cons: Had to change the pins on my Power LED connector but I have 12 year old case.
Would have preferred the Bios to default to fast boot disabled. My monitor takes a moment to detect a signal so until I disabled fast boot I never saw any video output other than the prompt to insert boot-able media. Slow boot with diagnostic output would have been preferable to start with, and once a good configuration was created then allow me to enable fast boot.
I wish they had made the board an inch bigger so that it would have reached the next set of riser screws on the case. I can't imagine to many situations where the slightly smaller size would have made a difference. The result is the inside edge with the SATA connectors, and DIMM slots felt as though it was not adequately supported. I could easily imagine someone using too much force on that edge and damaging the board. Not a huge problem, but something to be careful of during install.
Overall Review: I don't own a Sata 6 or USB 3 device yet so I've not tested those. I bought this board because I think it will give me plenty of room to grow and replace parts over the next few years. Based on the rest of the board I don't expect there to be any serious problem with either of these features.
I've not played with the overclock features but I didn't select this board for its OC features.
Pros: Open Box MSI 870A-G54 for $60.
Unlocks Phemon II 550 BE
Supports DDR3 1600
Saves on power and everything run cooler... and on and on.
Got a quality Mobo that someone else thought was DOA for dirt cheap. (Thank you costumer who returned it.)
Cons: Not a 16x16 Crossfire Motherboard, but that really isn't a con, I knew that when I purchased it and dont run Crossfire anyway.
Overall Review: OK, You guys need to take something into consideration. Look how often Newegg sells this board as an "Open Box Item", that means a lot of these so called "DOA's" are not DOA at all. I honestly think a lot of these DOA's are more due to Installer error rather than Manufacturer error. Like I said, I got this Mobo as an open box item and it started on my first try, runs stable and everything works like it should. I have been buying MSI motherboards for years and I have yet to come across one that was DOA, (new, refurbishment or open box.)
To tell you the truth, I think many of you reviewers who say they have a 5 star Tech level and claim to have a DOA better take a look in the mirror and ask yourselves, "Is my Tech Level really at a 5 star rating?" My guess is that many of you are first time installers or just don't know how to trouble shoot a Mobo after you've messed up the settings in the BIOS.
This is a quality Mobo from a quality Manufacturer and DOA's from this company are rare
Pros: great board, i read here about people saying dead mobo msi sucks, um this is a solid state device simple if you know what you are doing, go buy a dell or hp then you can get a msi put together for you. mobo basics AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black clocked to 4.4Mhz,G.SKILL RipjawsDDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) 8GB,MSI R6850 Cyclone PE/OC, RAIDMAX SMILODON, Lite-On 24X iHAS324 DVD sata, then cd and dvd drive ide, floppy drive, running raid 5 with four 500gb hdd plus one external 1.5tb usb drive for disk cache and back up, windows 7 X64, dont be discouraged by people that dont know what they are doing and cant build a board, MSI is one of the top boards, dont believe me look for your self...MSI products undergo rigorous quality control testing, attaining a 99.6% quality rate, a level far higher than the industry standard.

Cons: this my 5th msi board never had a problem of any kind keep up the good work msi...
Pros: Stable with Phenom 2 560 unlocked and OCed to B60 x4 3.8ghz.
Corsair H70 CPU cooler
8 GB Corsair RAM 2x4 gb 1600mhz
OCZ Vertex 2 60gb
Vistiontek 6870
Other Stuff™
Built under $700. Runs everything with full DX11 settings in 1920x1080 @ 45 FPS+
MOSFETs have not blown yet.
Cons: Minus 1 star for no stock heat spreaders on MOSFETS. Absolute joke. This is supposed to be an overclockers board!! I ordered Enzotech MOS-C10s and some Arctic Alumina thermal adhesive. Problem solved.
Otherwise the board is as advertised.
Overall Review: Careful when reading reviews and comments on this This is supposed to be an overclockers board!! motherboard on oc.net. Several users are making uneducated comments about the MOSFETs on this board because of failures when over clocking quad cores and hex cores. This board can NOT push the wattage required to OC higher end AMD chips! DON'T BUY THIS IF YOU WANT TO OC 955, 965, 1090T, 1100T, etc. If the chip requires 125w, 140w, don't OC on this board.
I've read nothing but horror stories about people blowing up the MOSFETs on this thing when overclocking. So far I've been running a stable OC/Unlock for over a month straight on a Phenom II 560 BE. The system never spikes over 40C, so I'm pleased.
If you OC you MUST put heatsinks on the MOSFETs.
I've had none of the audio or LAN issues mentioned in other posts. I'm guessing it's because I don't install drivers off disc or use stock windows drivers.
