Most Critical Review

Bad design

Western Digital WD Green WD15EADS 1.5TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD15EADS 1.5TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity to price ratio

Cons: High failure ratio even for hard drives... Even for Western Digital hard drives.

Overall Review: Western digital seems to have realized that these drives have an unacceptably high failure ratio, as they've been pulled from store shelves and (seemingly) discontinued. Trying to get warranty replacements was a disaster, WD waited 2 weeks to tell me they had no supply available. Thankfully that was in time to return the first two to newegg, but now another has died and I'm completely out of luck because WD shows no interest in making right on prior sales.

DLNA? Yeah right

SONY SMP-N100 Network Media Player with Wi-Fi
SONY SMP-N100 Network Media Player with Wi-Fi

Pros: None

Cons: This device is obviously not DLNA compliant. The only reason I bought it was to stream video from a DLNA server, yet this thing can't detect any of: ushare MediaTomb Windows Media Player ! Sony really needs to get their act together

Overall Review: Now I'm going to eat the return shipping cost to newegg because of Sony's false advertising, won't be buying anything by sony in the near-to-distant future.

Dropping like flies

Western Digital WD Green WD15EARS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD15EARS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity, low price

Cons: I bought 24 of these for a raid6 array for incremental backup purposes in a production server environment (for which the latency issues expressed in other reviews had no bearing). The drives were shipped from newegg in their original WD packaging, despite this two were immediately DOA - one was completely unresponsive, the other produced bad sector errors while attempting to format. Within a week two more cropped up with bad sectors, and in the six months since then two more have failed outright and three more are suffering the extreme lag that precedes a failure. When the first drives failed, I put in advance-RMA requests with WD which went ignored for three weeks, finally canceled those RMA requests and returned them to newegg for replacement just inside the 30-day return window.

Overall Review: Based on the first attempt to RMA with western digital, I haven't attempted to RMA the other four dead drives yet, seems rather pointless since WD's excuse for not replacing the first two was that they didn't have any... Talk about bold-faced lies, it's their best selling drive despite wide-spread failures. I was boycotting WD for 10 years prior to this due to their complete lack of quality control. I should have stuck with that. I've been gradually replacing the entire raid set with Seagates out of pocket.

Buyer beware!

Western Digital WD Green WD15EADS 1.5TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD15EADS 1.5TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great storage to price ratio.

Cons: Higher than normal failure rate for hard drives and worse! Attempted to return two failed drives to Western Digital on Advanced RMA tickets. Waited over two weeks and finally WD said they had no stock available to replace the drives with. Moral of the story: Don't assume the manufacturer will replace dead drives!

Overall Review: Stress test these drives in the first few days so you have time to return them to newegg if they're bad, because you can't count on WD honoring the warranty.

Up to but not including

Athena Power CA-SWH01B80 Black Steel Pedestal Server Case With EPS-12V 800W Green PFC Dual Fan Power Supply 8 External 5.25" Drive Bays
Athena Power CA-SWH01B80 Black Steel Pedestal Server Case With EPS-12V 800W Green PFC Dual Fan Power Supply 8 External 5.25" Drive Bays

Pros: Probably a good case... if your board fits

Cons: "Up to EATX" does not mean "Including EATX" I assumed, silly me, that an EATX board would fit in this case, it will not.

Piece of garbage

Thermaltake CLP0533 70mm 1 Ball Bearing CPU Cooler
Thermaltake CLP0533 70mm 1 Ball Bearing CPU Cooler

Pros: None, couldn't get it installed

Cons: Mounting mechanism is more fragile than the pins on a processor. You'll need tools not yet known to man or inhuman strength and endurance to install this thing, and once you finally hear that satisfying 'snap' indicating it's in place... it'll pop right back out in spite of itself. I have no idea why thermaltake is so highly acclaimed if this is the caliber of their products. Needless to say I'm returning both of them and hoping newegg won't mind the damage this heatsink did to its mounting mechanism as it backed itself out.

Overall Review: Get an Intel-branded heatsink, it may be cliche to buy the same brand heatsink and processor, but they generally work.
